No. 7 Stangs knock out No. 1 Buffs, 28-19

Van Wade

The Orange Leader

PEARLAND — It was a typical West Orange-Stark game Friday night as theyâ€buffaloed†top-ranked Giddings.

Senior tailback DePauldrick Garrett ran all over the place. Junior quarterback Ortavious Hypolite ran a tight ship. The Mustang defense came up with a solid outing against a tough offense.

However, the X-factor was junior wide receiver Josh Gloston. Gloston, a member of both WO-S’ state-qualifying relay teams last spring, broke Giddings’ back with a 93-yard kickoff return to end the third period as seventh-ranked WO-S went on to defeat the Buffaloes 28-19 in the Class 3A Region III Division II area roundof the playoffs.

Garrett piled up 167 yards on the ground on 24 caries and punched his ticket to the end zone three times to power the WO-S (11-1) arsenal. Hypolite completed 7-of-10 passes for 77 yards.

The Mustangs will face either Waco LaVega or Crockett in the regional semifinals next Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Sam Houston State University’s Bower Stadium.

The Buffaloes (11-1) were without the services of senior quarterback Brock Fitzhenry, who suffered an injury last week in a 21-12 win. Fitzhenry had rushed for nearly 1,800 yards and 25 touchdowns this season and over 7,200 yards in the last four.

Backup quarterback Jonathan Locke played well in the loss. The senior rushed the ball 23 times for 118 yards and scored all three of his squad’s touchdowns.

The Buffaloes outgained the Mustangs 345-283 but WO-S had just one turnover and definitely won the third phase of the game –special teams.

Leading 14-6 at intermission, the Mustangs came out and set the tone on their first possession of the second half.

Hypolite mixed in a couple nice passes to receivers Ronnie Dennis and Josh Rhodes as WO-S marched 67 yards in seven plays. Garrett and the offensive line did the rest as Garrett carried three times for 51 yards and capped it with a masterful 34-yard touchdown scamper off left tackle in which he juked out two Giddings defenders and bolted to the goal line to push the lead to 21-6 with 8:43 left in the third.

Giddings answered with their first series of the second half but going 60 yards in 14 tough plays as backup quarterback Jonathan Locke completed two passes for 30 yards on the drive and it was Locke that finished it with a 1-yard QB sneak with 2:22 left in the third. Kicker Sammy Artega hit the cross bar on the extra-point attempt as the Buffaloes trailed 21-12.

The Buffaloes crawled right back in it with a quick three-play 48-yard scoring jaunt. Burly fullback Shane Jenke had a bullish 36-yard scamper to the Mustang 12 and two plays later Locke bolted up the middle for an 8-yard touchdown keeper. Artega’s extra-point was good as Giddings cut the margin to 21-19 with 0:10 remaining in the third.

That’s when Gloston came up with the heroics, taking Artega’s kickoff and bolting up the middle. Once he broke through, the speedster was gone, outrunning the rest of the Buffaloes to paydirt. Kicker Josh Haynes PAT was good as WO-S went up 28-19 at the end of the third.

“My teammates said to get aggressive and that they would make the blocks and I was able to get through,†said Gloston. ‘I looked up, saw the middle, got one more block and that was the end. It feels good to get this win because we’ve been talking about it all week.We wanted to come out and make a statement by beating the No. 1 team.â€

Giddings was able to zip from its own 33 all the way down to the Mustang 2 thanks to nice running by Locke late in the contest but Jenke, who had 75 yards on nine caries, gave up the Buffaloes’ third turnover when he fumbled the ball over to Garrett heading towards the end zone and the Garrett pounced on the loose leather in the end zone to give the Mustangs the ball at their 20 with 1:42 remaining.

“Our kids fought hard and so did theirs,†said Mustang head coach Dan Hooks. “When two good teams play each other, crazy things are going to happen. If we don’t get that kickoff return, we’re in trouble. I’m proud of our kids, they’re great kids and we are a team.â€

Garrett was thrilled about the big-time victory.

“It feels great because a lot of people thought our season was going to end tonight,†Garrett said. “We played as a team. In the second half, we started letting off and Gloston stepped up big for us.â€

Hooks was happy with the Mustang run game.

“DePauldrick is a team player,†Hooks said. “If I asked him to play center, he’d be out there all game. I’ve watched him since seventh grade and he’s certainly developed into what he is now.â€

Hooks was also pleased about the way the veteran Mustang coaching staff has handled the season.

“There is not a better coaching staff in Southeast Texas,†Hooks said. “Coach (Randy) Crouch and Coach (Cornel) Thompson coached the heck out of a football game. We might not win another game, but e won this one.â€

The Buffaloes wasted no time getting on the scoreboard first, taking the first series of the game 69 yards in just four plays as four different players carried the ball.

Receiver/tailback Corey Brite, who had 72 yards on five caries, had the big gainer, a 43-yard dash down the right sideline that got to the Mustang10. After a WO-S personal foul moved the ball to the 5, quarterback Jonathan Locke barreled into the end zone from 5 yards out. Artega missed the extra point to the left as the Buffaloes led 6-0 with 10:14 remaining in the first period.

The Mustangs responded in quick fashion, taking their first possession 66 yards in six plays to hit paydirt.

Garrett had three carries for 35 yards and drew WO-S even with a smooth 20-yard touchdown scamper off right tackle. Hypolite hit senior receiver Ronnie Dennis on a 23-yard pass that got the Mustangs to the Buffaloes 28. Kicker Josh Haynes’ extra-point attempt was short as the game was tied 6-6 with 7:18 left in the first.

The teams traded turnovers late in the first period deep in the opposing team’s territory.

WO-S’ Dennis, trying to gain extra yardage off a short pass, fumbled the ball at the Giddings’ 16 with 2:48 in the period.

Locke broke off a 50-yard scamper to the Mustang 30 on the next series, but Giddings fullback Shane Jenke would cough up the leather to Mustang Kevin Robinson at the 32 with 1:13 left in the period.

The Mustangs took advantage of their caused turnover, casually marching the ball down the field 68 yards in 11 plays with all of it coming on the ground.

Hypolite had 20 yards on four carries to help move the chains while Garrett had 35 yards on seven hard-nosed carries and he capped the drive with a 5-yard touchdown blast off right tackle to make it 12-6 with 8:09 left in the half. The Mustangs went for the two-point conversion and made it look “smooth†as receiver Josh Gloston took a reverse and zipped around the right end to make it a 14-6 lead.

The Mustangs outgained the Buffaloes 193-141 in the first half and ran 18 more plays. Garrett bruised his way to 101 yards on 16 carries while Hypolite had 37 yards on 10 totes. Hypolite also completed 5-of-8 passes for 55 yards with Dennis hauling in three of them for 43 yards.

Locke had 59 yards on seven caries for the Buffaloes while Brite had two rushes for 44 yards. Giddings had just one pass attempt as Locke threw one incompletion.

WOW...way to go Mustangs!!!  You did what we should have done last year.  I really hate that fitzhenry didn't get in the game, but regardless...I think that we would have been the winner.

You showed MUCH heart against the former #1 3A team in the state...you made mistakes, but this is a classic example of the team who made fewer mistakes came out on top.  Noone can ask for more!!!

Way to coaches for coaching a good game.  Congrats players!!!

See you next week.

Congratulations Mustangs!!! You can go all the way...just stay focused. Hey, does anybody remember where you can see  the replay of this game? The announcer said that a replay of the game would be replayed online, but I can't remember the website.

I was trying to remember that too... Can anyone help us? I remember him saying it twice and thinking to myself, "I'll remember that"... yeah right!
