Tuesday was a good day for the Bearkats. Actually, it was almost perfect. Sam Houston State pitchers Casey Springer and Jon Lindenberger came within one out of throwing a combined perfect game in a 13-0 victory over Prairie View A&M. In his first outing of the season, Springer (1-0) threw five perfect innings, retiring all 15 of the batters he faced with one strikeout. Lindenberger relieved and did not allow a baserunner until Panthers center fielder Greg Ford lashed a two-out single to right in the top of the ninth. Lindenberger, who retired 12 of the 14 batters he faced, earned his first save as a Bearkat. Led by Keith Stein, Jeremy Holzbach, Heath Pugh and Nick Zaleski, the Bearkats (16-8) banged out 17 hits against five Prairie View pitchers. Stein, Holzbach and Zaleski had three hits each and combined for seven RBIs. Pugh added a pair of hits and scored three runs. And defensively, SHSU was superb. Stein and Todd Sebek made a few terrific grabs in the outfield for the Bearkats, while Clint Mann, Jamie Rolmeier and Holzbach turned in some outstanding plays in the infield that kept the no-hitter intact for 8 2/3 innings. “Casey was really impressive,†Johnson said, “and Lindenberger threw lots of hard stuff — unhittable stuff. It was a great day for the Bearkats. “We hit the ball, made some good defensive plays and got two outs in the ninth with a perfect game going. To be disappointed about not getting the perfect game tonight would be pretty short-sighted. That's not a bad ballclub. They're 16-8 and they're 6-0 in the SWAC. They've beaten some good ballclubs.†Again, Johnson was correct. The Prairie View team (16-9) that came to Don Sanders Stadium on Tuesday is a far cry from Panther teams of the past. Last season, Prairie View went 33-22 and won the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles. In the postseason, the Panthers nearly upset top-ranked Rice in the opening round of the NCAA regional in Houston. On Tuesday, Springer and Lindenberger dominated pretty much the same lineup that lost a heartbreaker to the Owls 6-5 last June. “Jon pitched well and our defense did great,†Springer said humbly. “The defense needs to be congratulated. It would be different if Jon and I had punched out 26 or 27 guys, but it was our defense that really shined tonight. We also are hitting the ball really well. The guys are finding their swings and our pitching staff seems to be getting in a groove. “Really, I just threw strikes and let my defense work tonight. They did a masterful job.†The Bearkats scored a pair of runs in the first inning. Coming off a sizzling weekend in which he went 7-for-11 with three home runs and 12 RBIs in three games, junior Bobby Verbick crashed an RBI double off the center-field fence to get the rout started. Holzbach added an RBI single in the first. SHSU added single runs in the second, third and sixth innings. The Kats turned a 5-0 contest into a laugher when they hung four runs on the board in both the seventh and eighth innings. Austin Boggs delivered a two-run double, while Zaleski plated another run in the seventh with a double to right. Tyson Mire had an RBI single in the eighth and Zaleski drove in three more with his second double in as many innings. “Everything feels like it's really starting to click,†said Zaleski. “Everybody's doing their part. We're playing small ball with bunts and hit and runs, and we're doing all the little parts of the game well.†The Kats are also hitting a ton. They brought a .326 team batting average into Tuesday's game, and by the end of the night, they were hitting .331 as a unit. SHSU has scored 198 runs in its first 24 games. That's an average of 8.25 runs per game. “We're a great hitting ballclub this year, one through nine,†Zaleski said. “Even the guys on the bench can really hit the ball. “This is great. I love it.†The Bearkats will try to make it four wins in a row when Texas A&M-Corpus Christi comes to Huntsville on Friday to start a three-game Southland Conference series. First pitch on Friday night is scheduled for 6:30.

Sam Houston wins two of three in Central Arkansas series Bobby Verbick March 16-18, 2007 GAME THREE - Sam Houston 15, Central Arkansas 6 NCAA BOX SCORE, PLAY-BY-PLAY CONWAY, Ark.-- Junior designated hitter Bobby Verbick had five hits and eight RBIs in leading the Sam Houston State Bearkats to a 15-6 victory over the University of Central Arkansas Bears in their Southland Conference series finale. Verbick, who hit for the cycle Sunday and also had two home runs on Saturday, had four RBI in the first two innings as the Bearkats (15-8, 2-1) went up 5-0 after two innings. He had a two-run triple in the first and added a two-run double in the second. A two-run single in the fourth gave Verbick six RBI and keyed a six-run inning that gave SHSU an 11-0 lead. For the three-game series, Verbick went 7-for-11 for a .636 batting average and 12 runs batted in. The Bears, who managed only one hit through the first five innings, put up six runs in the sixth. Matt Warren doubled down the right-field line for the first run and Derrick Corso followed with a similar shot to the same spot for another. Payton Seelinger’s sacrifice fly to right brought in the third run and an infield single by Jonathan Ashworth scored the fourth. Tye Throneberry went the opposite way for an RBI single and a run-scoring single to left-center by Kevin Rawls closed the gap to 11-6. However, the Bears left the bases loaded in that inning and again in the seventh and eighth innings. For the game, UCA stranded 12 runners. Corso went 3 for 5 for the Bears, while Rawls, Warren, Ashworth and Craig Nyborg all had two hits. Rightfielder Todd Sebek was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI for the Bearkats. SHSU starter Tim Gray (2-1) went 5.2 innings and got the win. Gray struck out three, walked two, and gave up seven hits. Grant Gatlin (0-1) got the loss for the Bears. He allowed an RBI single to Graham Martin but got out of the inning, stranding two. After the Bearkats added another insurance run in the top of the ninth, Prihoda struck out the side, all looking, in the bottom of the inning to close it out for his seventh save. The Bears (9-7, 1-0) won their first-ever Southland Conference game behind a 13-hit offensive attack and a 10-strikeout performance from junior Matt Whitaker. Whitaker (2-2) and Bobby Pritchett held the Bearkats to five hits. Jeremy Holzbach led Sam Houston State the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Five different Bears had at least two hits, with Warren contributing a game-high three RBI. Whitaker (2-2) went eight innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs. The Bears fell behind 4-0 after the Bearkats (13-8, 0-1) put up three runs in the fourth inning. Rightfielder Todd Sebek started the scoring for SHSU, singling up the middle, stealing second, then scoring on a single by Holzbach in the first inning. On Tuesday night at Don Sanders Stadium, Sam Houston State made the most of nine hits, two steals and five Dallas Baptist errors in a 9-6 victory over the Patriots. The Bearkats (11-6) didn't hit the ball that hard. In fact, all nine of their hits were singles, but they put together a five-run third inning to take a 6-1 lead. Then after Dallas Baptist roared back to tie the game at 6, SHSU tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fifth and added an insurance run in the eighth. “I've been really pleased with our guys,†Bearkats coach Mark Johnson said. “They continue to have quality at-bats. We had two productive at-bats, a high hopper to third base in the third inning that (Nick) Zaleski gets in play and Jeremy (Holzbach) hitting one up the middle with the bases loaded.†The Patriots (8-7) made errors on both plays. Three runs scored on Zaleski's slow roller to third, and the Bearkats took the lead for good when Dallas Baptist shortstop Austin Knight could not handle the bouncer up the middle off Holzbach's bat in the bottom of the fifth. “We're trying to get them to battle to the end of every at-bat,†Johnson said. “We gave up a comfortable lead tonight, but we didn't get down. We got some help from our opponents, but I felt good that we able to scrap through it and when we got opportunities, we responded.†Stephen Spaugh pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Stephen Price and picked up his first win. Closer Luke Prihoda pitched the ninth and notched his fifth save of the season. Catcher Heath Pugh led the Bearkats with a pair of hits and two RBIs. Todd Sebek and Zaleski also had two hits apiece, while Clint Mann, Bobby Verbick and Austin Boggs each added one hit. In the fifth, Boggs drew a one-out walk. Sebek singled to left and Pugh singled to right. With the bases loaded, Holzbach bounced a hot shot up the middle that ate up Knight. Two runs scored on Knight's error, and Spaugh, Jacob Howard and Prihoda pitched well enough to make that lead stand up in front of 196 fans. “I was pleased with our pitchers,†Johnson said. “Dallas Baptist is a very good offensive ballclub. Spaugh got hit around, but in a key situation (in the sixth, he gets out of a jam by striking out one of their best hitters. Price gives up an early home run, but he settled down and gave us a few good innings. “We're going to keep battling, scratching and believing.†The Bearkats added a single run in the eighth when Verbick lined a single into center to score Mann. No, they did go to prehistoric animals. They stayed with modern farm animals.

There was a team in the Woodville tournament, Woden I think, that made all types of farm animal noises. One inning it was quacking like a duck and the other it was mooing like a cow. One of the most annoying things (nothing beats softball chants) that I have ever heard.
