In 2000, WO-S was up 14-10 and Nederland was driving in the fourth. They were inside our 20. The QB threw a lateral pass to the WR that tipped off of his fingers and bounced behind him. Although the replays would show that the ball did move forward (a few inches), the referee did not blow the whistle. All of the Nederland players dropped their guard. Noticing that the whistle had not blown, WO-S LB Paul Thomas picked up the ball and started running. As he was picking it up, the crowd was blinded by the light bulbs that suddenly went off above 11 Nederland players' heads. Thomas scored and WO-S won 21-10. I will concede that the ball moved forward, though in real time it was sort of a judgement call, especially considering the "trick play" that Neumann had in the playbook (explained weeks later in a "chalk talk" segment) in which exactly such a situation unfolded (lateral pass, just barely backward, that bounces incomplete, and is casually picked up by the WR - who hurls it downfield to an open man). In the "Chalk Talk" episode, Neumann actually said that it was a great play, "but it has also come back to bite us in the butt." Regardless of the ref's misperception of the ball's trajectory, players should know to not stop playing until the whistle blows. However, it has been a "bring it up once a year" topic for the last six years. The ref blew the call, but not NEARLY as bad as Nederland's defense blew the play. Without sounding too smug, it would NEVER have happened under our DC.

Who do you think will be 21-3a Champs for 07?

A Garrett quote from that clip: "There's been all kinds of talk over the computer, but Coach T says a game ain't won by talk." I wonder who he's referring to? Thanks, balla! I know. Y'all have a stud too. But Garrett was the guy that destroyed y'all last year. -
I might sound like a homer, but you can't argue with Coach Cornel Thompson's consistent numbers. Through bad offenses and spectacular offenses, the defense rarely wavers. I have to go w/ SFA (to a degree) on the Ned defense issue. Nederland is a well-coached program with a consistent playoff tradition, but when a back runs for almost 2,500 yards and almost 30 TDs, how does the team go .500? Well, by giving up an average of 28 points per game and 220 rushing yards per game (including one game of over 530 yards) despite having one of the top defensive prospects in the state ready to stop the run. They gave up about 23 PPG in 2005, 17 in 2004, 13 in 2003, 21 in 2002 and 18 in 2001. That averages out to 20 points per game over the last six years - including 10 games allowing more than 35 points. It's certainly not enough to fire up the torches and storm the castle, but it's also not "elite." Respectable, yes. If you tell me that WO--S played Waller and our offense rolled up 540 total yards, I don't have to look at the paper or the box score. We won. I realize that Colton Johnson was an outstanding back, but he gained WELL OVER a fourth of his yardage for the season in that game. I'm not bagging on Nederland at all, but I don't think the DC belongs in this discussion. Just my opinion. My vote goes to Thompson, but Newton's D is typically pretty stout. Central has had some strong ones over the years. Last year, Dayton's D held us well up until the last third of the game.

We'll just have to agree to disagree on the 2000 game, Ned folk. There's no doubt in my mind that, regardless of the call, the W and L would not have changed. Isn't it time to move on? Shouldn't we be talking about how we cheated y'all in 2005?

I'll assume, though, that if you combined the scores of the two games, we won -
To be in the top three, they're going to have to open up the passing game. HF had less than 300 passing yards for the entire year - which is probably a big part of the reason that they had less than 1,300 total offensive yards for the entire season. That's averaging about 130 yards per game - not to mention 9.4 points per game. With all due respect, in last year's game, I felt bad for some of the players, who did play with heart. It looked as though they were never a threat to score. I just don't see them beating Jasper, WO-S, Kirbyville or Silsbee using the plays or (please forgive me) QBs they did last year - unless they were VERY young. They completed 25 percent of their passes (21 of 84) and had 16 INTs and NO touchdowns. Though they had a rough game or two, the defense seems fairly solid. If I were those guys, though, I would resent the offense. They lost three games in which the D gave up less than 14 points (the offense scored 7 in each). One of those opponents' gave up AT LEAST 21 points in every game BUT H-F. Another of those three teams gave up an average of 29 points per game. In other words, you might be right about HF getting into the top three, but I don't think the problem is one of players not pushing themselves hard enough. There seems to be, from an outsider's perspective, a pretty severe problem on offense. I think they averaged about 15 PPG the year before. But, then again, I could be wrong.

It was 62-0 last year. I think it was 68-13 the year before. -

So, in another thread, you mentioned that the D Line is going to suffer a bit. No trash talk - just real discussion. Depauldrick Garrett, who ran for 187 yards on the Wildcats last year, returns. Add to that a very mobile QB, which we did not have last year, when we earned 247 yards on the ground. Will the Wildcats be able to stop the run this year without succombing to what should be a fairly good passing attack? Do you expect an absolute shootout, or for your D-line to step up and stop WO-S. Personally, I think they have to. In my memory, I can only remember two teams that have EVER put up more than 30-some-odd points on us - one was more than 11 years ago, and the other was a state champion. I don't see a high-scoring shootout. -
Hall, then Dugat.

Sadly, 84-0 was being gentle. It could have been well over 100. -
who is your teams best players this year?
WOS92 replied to pngbred's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
We'll have some young players coming up who should be really good, like Ortavious Hypolite, Chase Adams and Tre Franks (brother of ATM's Kerry and Texas Tech's Jacoby). Our best returners are guys like Depauldrick Garrett (AKA DPG), Cory Bell, Ronnie Dennis... We lost quite a few to graduation, but there are some real future stars ready to step up. -
How is that comedy? We've just recently started playing smaller schools like this, but certainly Anahuac put up more of a struggle in the times we've played them than Liberty did last year. I'm just saying - if you're gonna be disrespectful...

Yeah, cuz they were supposed to last year. Even I was disappointed. -
Yeah, the call was missed, but it was dang close - close enough that it would be an easy mistake to make - especially when you've been warned about this "bounce pass" trick play. All I am saying is that it was a much closer call than - say - just blowing the whistle when a guy catches a pass 15 yards in the clear and is sprinting for a TD, ala the WO-S/Ned game I mentioned. That's simply ridiculous. In the 00 call, you're talking about a matter of an inch or two if you've seen the slo-mo replays (I have), and it was at full speed. Waaah. You'd have lost anyway. Let's move on with our lives.
-
Funny you should say that, because we dropped at the same time, and we were still fairly competitive. Silsbee was a perennial cellar dweller in our "super 4A district," while we missed the playoffs on tiebreakers three of our four years out - not to mention a trip to the finals in 00.

Clean hit, but one of two last year that sent QBs to the hospital via helicopter. Scary moment.

Interesting dilemma - one does better than they should against teams with a lot more raw talent, the other does better than they should against teams with a lot more depth. -

I don't know why the OC is still here. We're asking the same question. We've had five D1 players over the last four years, but before that we didn't have that many. I don't know if we'll have any D1 seniors this year, though Garrett might end up at Baylor. And as far as winning the title every year, there are several other teams across the state that are just as loaded as we have been. -

He's there - but then, he's been there last year and dropped points on the district like birdseed. Remember? (490 yards, 46 points) When one of our district foes finally learns to stop one or two of those three plays, perhaps there will be change. Heck, he's been there for a decade. This is nothing new. He just hurts us in the postseason. Our athletes manage to overcome most of the bad calls. This year, we've got our offensive MVP of the Kville game last year (Garrett) and a kid at QB named Hypolite who is going to surprise a whole lot of people. -
Rhodes had like 1600 yards. He had a great season, just not in the WO-S game. Passing-wise, I've heard Hazelwood's name a lot, but the stats just don't seem impressive. I've heard his name on here a lot more than I heard Andre Bevil's name last year, and Bevil ended up (in his first and only year) with 400 more yards passing, 15 more TDs and 5 fewer picks than Hazelwood, who completed about 50 percent and threw an equal number of picks and TDs (10). Bevil's completion rate was about 64 percent as well.

Sounds like what I heard last year, right up until the slaughter. Then there was like a week of silence. So my coughing will directly affect the outcome of the game? Cool. *cough* *cough* Our RB who ran for almost 200 on y'all is still here. *cough* *cough* (avg'd 14.4 YPC in the game to Rhodes's 2.6) *cough* *cough* 485 yards to under 200 yards *cough* *cough* *cough* Talk when you prove you can back it up. *cough* *cough* Orangefield played us much harder. *cough* Maybe y'all can beat Silsbee too if I keep it up, huh? -

Without a doubt, eh? Sounds familiar. Fortunately, I still have some of that crow left from last year, and I remember just how you like it. ;D *cough* 46-16 *cough* -
Well, you should know. Now, me, I'm just a diehard WO-S fan who doesn't miss a game. I personally feel like we'll be there fighting for the district title. If a "down year" means we lose one district game and a pre-district game or two, then maybe. Jasper won't be back quite enough to make it this year, I don't think. They return a bunch, but a bunch who were badly coached last year and had an ABYSMAL year, going 2-8, giving up an average of 26.4 points and only scoring an average of 10.8. That's more than a one-offseason fix. And folks are down on WO-S for all we lost, but Silsbee lost its top passer, its top three rushers, its top two DBs and its #2 and #3 receivers. The returning #1 receiver had only 10 catches and 3 TDs. So it looks like the two of us are starting off fairly even. We at least return one of the top backs in the area, and this guy comes in at QB: Beaumont Enterprise COLLEGE STATION - Ortavious Hipolite has yet to play in a varsity game but already has a favorite target. Ronnie Dennis caught three touchdown passes from Hipolite in the West Orange-Stark 7-on-7 football team's 49-29 victory over Gonzales in the first-round of the 32-team small school state tournament. WO-S is one of two teams to have scored 40 points or more in all four tournament games. The other is Pilot Point, which beat WO-S in a pool-play game 41-40. Also in pool play, WO-S beat Madisonville 48-39 and lost to La Villa 49-42. Actually, he DID play in a varsity game last year. He played very well in that Round 1 drubbing of Liberty.
