  4. Lumberton boys 4, Nederland 1 LUMBERTON -- Goal production turned into a chronic problem at Raider Stadium on this windy night for Nederland's Bulldogs. District 20-4A defending champion Lumberton only led in shots on goal, 17-15, yet coach Chad Luttrull's Raiders converted more opportunities and captured a 4-1 victory. Lumberton (4-4 and 4-0) scored twice in each half but trailed 1-0 before overtaking NHS for a 2-1 halftime edge. The Dogs (4-3-1 and 2-1-1) scored in the 25th minute when Ryan Washburn booted home a penalty kick. Lumberton sophomore Wes Brackin tied the game by answering with a goal three minutes later. Senior Brent Waldrup and sophomore Scott Poole made second-half goals for the Raiders. "Lumberton took advantage of their opportunities," Nederland coach Rob Bledsoe said. "We just could not score. They did a good job of defending and finishing. They did a good job of counter-attacking." Bledsoe dished out plaudits to three of his players -- senior midfielder Hunter Turk, sophomore midfielder Austin Wyble and freshman midfielder Jordan Wagner. "I think we won the midfield but they won both of the ends of the field," Bledsoe said.
  5. Indians offense comes alive in 8-0 win at H-J PREP SOCCER The Port Arthur News SOUR LAKE -- Port Neches-Groves had not scored more than four goals in any game before Tuesday night but the Indians adjusted their varsity roster and received a spark from a pair of freshman call-ups in defeating Hardin-Jefferson 8-0. PN-G (5-2-1 and 3-1) scored four times in each half and Tribe coach Don Sandell welcomed the addition of newcomers Trevor Hoffpauir and Nick Guidry from the junior varsity. The Indians thoroughly dominated shots on goal, 29-3. The loss dropped the Hawks to 0-4 and 0-4. "We finally got offensive tonight," Sandell said. "Actually I'm really proud of our defense. Our offense fed off of our defensive energy." Tanner Worley scored two first-half goals and Matt Morrell knocked in an unassisted goal before Hoffpauir converted a Carlos Ortiz corner kick with seven minutes left in the half. Guidry opened the second-half scoring eight minutes into the second half. Ortiz, Justice Lloyd and goalkeeper Steven Baque (penalty kick) completed PN-G's second-half production. PN-G will visit West Orange-Stark on Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
  6. Titans drop important game to Eagles By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News The Memorial Titans couldn’t catch a break in Tuesday’s very important 60-53 loss to the Atascocita Eagles in Port Arthur. The game was well decided midway through the second quarter when Memorial trailed 24-10 after watching the Eagles put on a 16-2 run. But the Titans were a stubborn bunch on Tuesday and managed to cut the game to six points with 36 seconds left on the clock when Jacovin Buckner heit a pair of free throws. Buckner’s two points put the score at 57-51. Memorial fouled to send Atascocita’s Shawn Taran to the line with 32 seconds left. Taran missed both shots but the Titans missed out on a very important rebound that the Eagles gathered up, forcing Memorial to foul again. The Eagles converted those free throws to put the game at 59-51 and out of reach with just 30 ticks on the clock to go. With the loss, Memorial and Atascocita move into a two-way tie for fourth place in District 21-5A with a 6-4 league mark. There are just four games remaining in the district season and only four teams make the playoffs. Memorial’s JeKore Tyler nearly brough the Titans back by himself in the third quarter. Tyler scored 14 in the third and had 16 on the night, which led all scorers. He helped the Titans get off a 10-4 run to cut the game down to 37-31 with two minutes to play in the third. In the final minute, however, Memorial turned the ball over three times to Atascocita, who scored six unanswered points to close out the third period with an 8-2 run. That run was too much for the Titans to overcome as the Eagles started the fourth quarter with a 47-34 lead. Even though all seemed lost, Memorial tried its hardest to fight back in the final eight minutes. But every time the Titans forced a turnover, they gave one right back.
  7. Bears nab must-win against Nederland Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Facing a must-win situation, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears played with tremendous will and determination at The Bear Cave Tuesday night against the Nederland Bulldogs. The Bears dominated the boards, played tight defense and made all the key plays when they needed them as they went on to post a vital 63-59 District 22-4A victory. The Bears (18-10, 4-6) gained control of the battle with a 16-6 run in the second quarter and withstood several late runs by the Bulldogs (15-13, 5-5) to hang on for the win. LC-M finds itself just one game back of Nederland, Vidor (9-13, 5-5), and Dayton, which are all tied for third. Vidor was stunned by Port Neches-Groves 77-59 Tuesday. The Dayton Broncos (8-12, 5-5) also are in the mix after they stunned second-place Beaumont Central (17-10, 8-2) 71-64. “Many people thought we were down and out, but we’re far from it,†said LC-M coach Darin Harley. We have some terrific seniors on this team and they’re not going to go down without a fight. They showed such tremendous energy all night long. They needed to take care of business tonight and they did just that. I’m so proud of them.†C.J. Champine had a superb overall outing for the Bears as he notched a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. He also got it done on the defensive end with five steals. LC-M was balanced across the board with Champine getting plenty of help. Dallas Bean contributed 13 points and nine rebounds. Kevin Cooper pumped in 14 points and grabbed seven boards while David Sicktich tallied 12 points and seven rebounds. LC-M dominated the glass, outrebounding Nederland 38-25. “The kids set the tone early with their all-out hustle,†said Harley. “The big key was the way they were able to control the boards. We got a lot of second chances.†The Bears led by as much as 51-39 with 5:05 left in the game but the Bulldogs wouldn’t go away, using the hot hand of sharpshooter Evan Fitch, who scored all 16 of his points, including hitting four three-pointers, in the fourth period. A Fitch trey got the Bulldogs to within 59-56 with less than 20 seconds remaining but Bean responded with a late bucket and a free throw to preserve the win. Nederland hit three three-pointers to grab a 17-14 edge at the end of the first period. Champine and Cooper scored five points apiece to keep the Bears close. However, the Bears’ intensity rose up, especially on the defensive end in the second period. Champine hit for five points in the quarter. Bean tallied four points and Justin Kinsley, who came off the bench to score seven points, hit a big trifecta and the Bears forced Nederland into six of their 14 turnovers to go up 30-23 at the half. The Bears utilized the toughness of Sicktich down low to hold off the Bulldogs in the third. Sicktich bruised his way to eight of points in the quarter and also set the tone with tremendous defense. “David Sicktich was a beast tonight,†said Harley. “We’ve been looking for that low post presence and he gave that to us tonight. Not only did he score some critical baskets and rebounded well, he was able to alter a lot of shots on the defensive end.†LC-M took the Bulldogs’ best shot in the final eight minutes. The Bears survived a rocky fourth period from the free-throw line as they went just 3-of-12 and finished just 9-of-21. The Bears held Nederland’s leading scorer on the season Chris Hammond to only 14 points. Hammond did lead the Bulldogs with nine rebounds., Guard Francis Torres finished with 11 points while post Dionte Forney had five rebounds. The Bears committed just 12 turnovers while Nederland went 9-of-11 from the free-throw line. The Bears head to Lumberton Friday for another crucial tilt. “It’s another must-win for us, heck, all of them are,†said Harley. “We’ve yet to win a district game on the road this season and it has to be on Friday night or we’ll be in trouble.â€

  10. Lady Cards down Lady ’Cats Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — When the Bridge City Lady Cardinals needed her the most, Jenna Angelle picked up her fourth foul early in the third period. Usually Jenna Angelle would be taken out yet Bridge City Coach Allen Ashworth stayed with the senior the rest of the game and Jenna Angelle came up big. Jenna Angelle came up with 21 points and 10 rebounds Tuesday night as the Lady Cardinals took down the Kirbyville Lady Wildcats, 69-60. Bridge City is now 10-13 overall and 3-9 in District 21-3A play. Kirbyville fell to 8-9 on the year and 5-7 in the district standings. Jenna Angelle scored 14 of her 21 points in the second half just when Kirbyville kept making a move. “Jenna plays better when she has four fouls because she knows she cannot get another one,†Ashworth said. “I figured we might as well go all the way with her. Jenna had 21 and Lauren (Angelle) had 16 so without those two and we were in trouble.†Lauren Angelle added 13 rebounds to her 16 points while both Jordan Royal and Sarah McPherson each finished the night with nine points. Junior Sam West added 13 rebounds in the victory while Cassie Carr had six rebounds and Allison Angelle snared five rebounds. The game started off with Bridge City ready to run Kirbyville right out of Cardinals Gym. The Lady Cardinals were up 17-5 after the first period, the Lady Wildcats started to chip away at the lead in the second. Abrial Wright, who had 21 points and eight rebounds for Kirbyville, scored 13 points in the second period as the Lady Wildcats outscored the Lady Cardinals 29-22 before the break. McPherson hit two three-pointers for the Lady Cardinals in the second and Lauren Angelle’s free throwing also kept Bridge City up on top. Lauren Angelle finished 9-for-12 from the free throw line in the second and Bridge City was 10-for-14 from the charity stripe in the second frame. It was Jenna Angelle and Royal in the third period to keep Bridge City in charge. Jenna Angelle had six points in the frame while Royal started the third off with a three-pointer on her way to five points in the period. Bridge City would outscore Kirbyville 17-12 in the third and held a 56-46 lead heading into the fourth. The Lady Wildcats were able to close within one at 57-56 only to see Jenna Angelle and Royal come up huge again. Jenna Angelle ended a 6-0 Kirbyville run with a bucket and Royal then drained yet another three-pointer. Jenna Angelle then added another shot to make it 64-56. The Lady Cardinals then led by at least six points for the rest of the game. Lauren Angelle opened the Lady Cardinals scoring in the first period with “and-one†to give Bridge City its first lead, which it never gave up in the entire game. After Kirbyville’s Dishonda Gosey hit a shot making it 3-2 Bridge City, the Lady Cardinals went on a 14-0 run to make it 17-2. That is when Kirbyville started to push back against Bridge City, forcing the Lady Cardinals to hold on to win the game. “We are just young and most of the players are learning how to win,†Ashworth said. “We will out-hustle anybody on any night. Our biggest problem is we try to be aggressive all game and sometimes that is not necessary. That is partially my fault but we are learning.†Bridge City returns to action Friday when they play host to the Hamshire-Fannett Lady Longhorns.
