Dravannti makes Parade All-America The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND -- Nederland linebacker Dravannti Johnson is among nine Texans named to the 45th annual Parade magazine high school All-America football team. Johnson, a 6-2, 235 pound linebacker, is the first Nederland player ever named to the select team. He will sign with the University of Texas next week and is already enrolled in school in Austin. Johnson already was selected to play in the U.S. Army All-America Bowl on Jan. 5 at San Antonio's Alamodome. Besides being a repeat selection on The News Super Team at Christmas, Johnson was named to the Associated Press Sports Editors Class 4A all-state first team defensive unit. The News attempted to reach Johnson on Thursday on his cell phone but Johnson was unable to be contacted. While Johnson represented Nederland's first-ever Parade All-American selection, it marked the second time for Bulldogs coach Larry Neumann to be with such an award winner. Neumann worked as an assistant at Port Arthur Thomas Jefferson when Parade All-American quarterback Craig Stump played in the early eighties. Nederland's athletic department received a plaque on Thursday in the mail recognizing Dravannti's accomplishment. The remaining other Texans named by Parade magazine include Jacquizz Rodgers, a 5-7, 190-pound running back from Lamar Consolidated High School in Rosenberg; Marcus Wright, a 5-7, 170-pound running back from Reagan High School in San Antonio; Jermie Calhoun, a 6-0, 210-pound running back from Van High School in Van; Aundre Dean, a 6-1, 200-pound running back from Katy High School in Katy; R.J. Washington, a 6-3, 245-pound lineman from Fossil Ridge High School in Keller; J.B. Shugarts, a 6-7, 305-pound lineman from Klein High School in Klein; Aaron Williams, a 6-1, 175-pound defensive back from McNeil High School in Austin; and Riley Dodge, a 6-0, 185-pound quarterback from Carroll High School in Southlake. The athletes are among 58 players from 24 states to make the team, which will be listed in this Sunday’s issue. Founded in 1963, Parade’s All-America High School Football Team has a legacy of recognizing outstanding athletes who have gone on to star on college and professional football fields. Thirteen Parade All-Americans have won the Heisman Trophy: Tim Tebow, Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart, Eric Crouch, Chris Weinke, Ron Dayne, Herschel Walker, Charles Woodson, Rashaan Salaam, Marcus Allen, Billy Sims, Earl Campbell and Tony Dorsett. NFL rosters for 2007-2008 boast 156 Parade All-Americans, including Peyton Manning, Vince Young and Adrian Peterson, to name just a few. Other recognizable Parade All-Americans include Emmitt Smith, Dan Marino, Joe Montana, John Elway, Donovan McNabb and Earl Campbell. Before vying for Super Bowl stardom this Sunday, the following Giants and Patriots players were named Parade All-Americans. >From New England: Kyle Brady, Kevin Faulk, Randy Moss and Junior Seau. From New York: Plaxico Burress, Michael Johnson and R.W. McQuarters.

21-5A soccer race gets started By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published February 1, 2008 The wind is blowing and the sky is pouring, so it must be soccer season. Tonight, the Lee and Sterling soccer teams will begin their pursuit of the playoffs as they open District 21-5A competition. The mudders will be out in force at Sultis Memorial Stadium as the Ganders take on defending district champion Kingwood at 6 p.m. The Lady Ganders will be on the road to take on Kingwood, while the Sterling girls will open district at home against Humble and the Sterling boys will play at Humble. The last time that the Kingwood boys dropped a district match was two years ago, when Lee defeated the Mustangs in a shootout. The last two matches have not gone as well for the Ganders as they have been blown out in both. The task will once again be uphill for Lee, as they will enter the game without three starters. Benito Huerta and Aaron Rodriguez drew red cards against La Porte and Octavio Torres drew a soft red (two yellow cards) in a game that saw six La Porte players also ejected. The Ganders (3-2) will not play a junior varsity game and will bring up three off that team, including Alex Morfin who has scored two consecutive game winners. Lee will also lean on Luis Camacho, who has scored four goals in the last two games. “We have won three games in a row,†coach Criss Dippel said. “What’s encouraging it that we’re still young. A few of the guys are timid and as physical as Kingwood is, we can’t be timid.†The Sterling boys are 2-4-1 entering district but that’s deceiving as most of their games have gone down to the wire. The defense has been stronger than head coach Jim Richter expected and the offense has been able to develop scoring opportunities. The key for Sterling in district will be to convert those opportunities in a much-improved 21-5A. “Kingwood will be Kingwood and everybody else will be pretty much even,†Richter said. “This year, more than any other, you are going to have to have to come and play every night. “Humble is going to be physical and always has pretty good players. I am really happy that we played well in our last game against Pearland (1-0 loss), but the bottom line is we are going to have to score.†The Lady Ganders will have a big task set out for them as they open district against Kingwood. Lee is 1-7 on the season. “We’ll have certain goals for this game,†Lee head coach Jay Langlois said. “We want to do a better job of holding them off as long as we can. “Generally after they scored the first goal it is ‘Here we go again’ and we want to stay away from that syndrome. A positive result for us may not be reflected in the final score.†The Sterling girls have a much easier road in their opener as they take on Humble. The Lady Wildcats have struggled early in the year, dropping games to the tune of 9-0 and 10-0 while Sterling has finally gotten some games under its belt and has begun to come together. The Lady Rangers, 4-3-1, had a strong showing in the North Shore tournament and followed up with a win over South Houston Monday. “We have really been playing good,†Sterling head coach Rusty Mathews said. “I think we will be all right. We have had three good days of practice and we have gotten over some injuries. “The girls have really been looking forward to this.â€

Pats’ coach turns eye to volleyball By Dave Rogers Published February 1, 2008 Goose Creek Memorial coach Bret Boyd said he hopes to hire the first volleyball coach for Baytown’s third high school next week. “The first priority is going to be the head volleyball coach, because of scheduling,†Boyd said as he worked his way through a stack of resumes on his desk. In all, the new coach and athletic coordinator figures he needs to hire 26 or 27 coaches before the school opens in August. Since volleyball is the first girls’ team sport to compete in the fall, Boyd has given it top priority. Once the UIL announces its district lineups this morning in its biennial realignment, volleyball coaches around the state will begin filling their non-district schedules for next fall. “Starting Monday, I want to call in applicants and try to narrow it down to a couple and have them visit with the principal (Al Richard),†Boyd said. “I want to see if we can get a coach hired in the next week or so.†Many expected Boyd to name a girls’ athletic coordinator first and let that coach play a role in hiring the other girls’ coaches. Girls’ basketball coach Terry Gray is the girls’ coordinator at Lee and tennis coach Jan Strubbe is the girls’ coordinator at Sterling. “It’ll be different from Sterling and Lee,†Boyd said. “We’re a smaller situation than 5A.†Goose Creek Memorial’s Patriots are expected to compete in Class 4A initially. The school is opening with only grades 9-11 and won’t have a senior class until its second year. “We’re not dealing with as many kids (as 5A schools). We want to get the best coaches we can for each sport, and then we’ll deal with the coordinator aspect of it.†Although Boyd doesn’t envision anyone besides a couple of assistant football coaches starting to work at Memorial until the summer, he wants his incoming hires, as he names them, to help in setting schedules and ordering equipment. “Once we get everything (head coaches) into place, we’ll work together on hiring their assistants and we’ll worry about day to day operations,†Boyd said. “The number of coaches I hire will depend on teaching fields and second sports (head coaches in some sports working as assistants in others), and the number will go up as kids do.†Boyd’s defensive coordinator, Wes Rodgers, is already in Baytown and helping the head coach run his football off-season program. They hope another assistant coach or two, including an offensive coordinator, can come to join them by spring break. In the meantime, it’s hectic. The district has been advertising for a trainer and 10 head coaches for Memorial – boys’ and girls’ basketball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, boys’ and girls’ track, volleyball, baseball, softball and tennis. “We have resumes coming in from everywhere and I’m trying to sort them out,†Boyd said. “I’m spending 12 hours a day answering phone calls, talking to coaches, trying to make equipment lists. “All the things you need to run a program, things you take for granted. You’ve got to get it all. That’s mind-boggling.â€

Crosby football player killed in wreck By Kari Griffin Published February 1, 2008 - Updated 57 minutes ago Crosby football player Roshaad Andre Mayweather, 17, died Thursday afternoon at Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital from injuries suffered in a car crash that occurred on Barbers Hill Road earlier that morning. Investigators said foggy conditions likely contributed to the two-car collision. Witnesses who spoke with Mayweather while he waited to be removed from the vehicle said the Crosby varsity football player was conscious and talking to the paramedics, Crosby superintendent Mike Joseph. It appeared that only Mayweather’s leg was injured in the crash, he said. Crosby High School principal Marley Morris and athletic director Kevin Flanigan were at the hospital with Mayweather’s mother while the teenager underwent surgery. He did not survive, and was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon. Flanigan said Mayweather will be dearly missed by his classmates and his team. The coach added that although Roshaad was real quiet, he was very well respected. “He was a leader and a great kid to have in the locker room. He talked about going to Blinn College and trying to get on the team,†Flanigan said. “The kids loved him and the coaches loved him. He had a big heart. When I came in at 3:30 p.m. and school was out there were guys in the locker room lifting weights, I have never seen it in such a somber mood.â€
