  8. La Marque next up for Ybarra, Eagles By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun If Brooks Ybarra is inducted into the Barbers Hill Sports Hall of Fame, it will be his performance Tuesday night that serves as his legacy. With a couple of spin moves and a flip of the wrist, Ybarra broke Beaumont Central’s heart. His 35th point of the game hung on the rim before going through the net at the sound of the horn to give the Eagles a 73-71 win in a bi-district game at Lee College. Barbers Hill will now face LaMarque in La Porte, Saturday at 2 p.m. “I kind of stared at it and then we celebrated,†Barbers Hill head coach Nathan Toon said of the game-winner. “That was the best game I have been a part of as a head coach, assistant coach or a player. “A lot of people at Barbers Hill will remember that game for a long time. It was that exciting.†The Eagles were able to expose matchups offensively to offset the Beaumont Central’s advantage inside. Six of the first eight points for the Jaguars came from offensive rebounds, but Barbers Hill (21-11) responded by attacking the paint. Ybarra was able to get to the basket against Lincoln Charleston as the Jaguars concentrated on Jon Daniels and Ian Hamlin. Central switched defenders but it had little effect as Ybarra scored 20 points in the first half. Trailing 35-32 at the half, the Jaguars went to a zone defense to start the third quarter and paid for it. Daniels only had two points in the first half but heated up quickly with a couple of 3-pointers to force a Central timeout at the 6:22 mark with Barbers Hill leading 41-34. The Jaguars went to a man-to-man but the Eagles stayed hot as Daniels added another trey and Ybarra hit two more. “Offensively they really didn’t match up well with Brooks,†Toon said. “They went to a zone and Jon hit some threes. Fortunately we shot the ball really well from the 3-point line.†With Hamlin battling foul trouble and cramps, the Jaguars picked up the defensive pressure in the fourth quarter and worked Barbers Hill over on the offensive boards. With Charleston and Jamar Gulley leading the charge, Central made it a three-point game with three minutes remaining. A Ybarra basket along with a Daniels 3-pointer made the score 69-61with 2:14 left in the game but Central answered with an 8-0 run to tie the game with 51 seconds remaining. With the crowd on its feet, Jake Miller gave Barbers Hill a 71-69 lead on an inbounds play as the Jaguars’ interior defense let him slide through the lane unguarded. Charleston scored on the ensuing possession and Central forced a Barbers Hill turnover with its press. Ybarra swatted a layup out of bounds in what turned out to be a game-saving play. Central turned the ball over following a timeout and Barbers Hill got the ball across half-court and called timeout to set up the play. “The plan was to get Brooks the ball and let him make a play, either passing the ball or scoring,†Toon said. As was the case most of the night, Ybarra was able to get through the defense, dribbling out of a double-team near half court and avoiding another one near the top of the key as he drove through three defenders to put up the game-winning shot. Daniels finished with 14 points to go along with Ybarra’s 35. Hamlin also scored 13 in the game, nine in the second half. Gulley led Central with 21 points and Chris Harris added 12, all in the first half.
  9. Rivera 21-4A’s offensive player of the year By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published February 21, 2008 Barbers Hill senior Keely Rivera hit double digits in rebounds and steals several times this season, but it was her ability on the offensive end that earned her District 21-4A Offensive Player of the Year. Rivera took over the primary scoring role for the Lady Eagles this season after sophomore Paris Carter went down with a season-ending knee injury and led the team in scoring. Barbers Hill finished second place in district with a 12-2 record and an appearance in the area round of the playoffs. Sonja Curry of 21-4A champion C.E. King was named coach of the year after leading the Lady Panthers to a perfect 14-0 district record and was joined in the superlative club by La’Tis Manning of C.E. King ,who was named district MVP. The league’s coaches voted Aly Saver of Forest Brook defensive player of the year and Diamond Webb of Forest Brook newcomer of the year. “I thought the district did an excellent job of trying to represent the talent,†Barbers Hill head coach John Chancellor said. “Somebody is always left off of the list, somebody is always disappointed, but the coaches really worked hard and I would like to congratulate everyone that got picked.†Barbers Hill senior Shannon Mudd and sophomore Jasmine Carter were each named to the all-district first team. Also named first team was senior LaQuisha Walker of Crosby. Walker led a rebuilt Lady Cougar team to a third-place finish in district and a bi-district appearance. Filling out the first team was B.J. Walker and Joisslyn Lumpkin Boozer of C.E. King, Lai Ana Gill and Bianca Harris of Smiley, Keia Strother and Lyndsey Thomas of New Caney and Alexis Jackson of Forest Brook. Senior Lauren Sadler and sophomore Jillian Coon of Barbers Hill were named to the second team, as was Crosby senior Cortney Bradley. Joining the area athletes on the second team were Maria Ruiz and Keiara Jackson of Galena Park, Rachel Mitchell of C.E. King and Andrea Arney and Shelbee Pier of Huffman. Juniors Britney Gibbs and Cirby Manchaca of Barbers Hill were named honorable mention. Seniors Nikki Mora and Rhadaya McAllister were named honorable mention for Crosby as were Lady Cougar juniors Amanda Navarro and Maci Bush.

  11. Seahawks snag big win, 68-63 By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News Good times have never been so good for basketball at Lamar State College-Port Arthur. By defeating North Lake College 68-63 on Wednesday night at Carl Parker Center, the Seahawks have positioned themselves in a posture to play their most important home games in school history just around the corner. Never in the history of the school has LSCPA been able to host a post-season tournament game in their competitive Metro Athletic Conference, but the Bluebirds have a terrific opportunity to accomplish that. The Seahawks (12-14 and 5-6) complete their regular season Saturday at home against Mountain View College's Lions (10-16, 3-8). Lamar-Port Arthur outlasted Mountain View 93-84 in overtime on Jan. 30 at Dallas. A win on Saturday would assure the Seahawks of hosting a first-round tournament game for the first time in school history. That's the kind of strides which coach Don Bryson, Andre Boutte, Jr., George Williamson, Sam Stelly, Noah Cole, Cody Guidry and company have made in the program's fourth season. Bryson predominantly kept LSCPA in a 2-3 zone for most of the night. Obviously that ploy made Lamar-Port Arthur more vulnerable than anything to the three-point outside shot. "They only made seven threes against us," Bryson chirped afterwards. "It seems like everybody likes to shoot the threes against us." Leading only 31-30 at halftime, the hosts established a more comfortable cushion early in the second half. They leaned on a balanced contribution from five double-digit scorers -- Vidor sophomore George Williamson led all scorers and rebounders with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Cole followed with 12 points, while the trio of Guidry, Stelly and Boutte delivered 10 points each. Boutte absolutely came up big on the boards with nine. His move to the inside from the perimeter has been significant in Lamar Port Arthur's recent second-half outings. "We moved P-Nut inside and he's really helped us," Bryson said. "We did a pretty good job on defense to hold them to 63 points. "We probably outrebounded them (for the game) but they had a lot more offensive rebounds and they got us bad at the end." The Seahawks almost failed to finish off the Irving-based Blazers (13-15, 7-4) in this game. A 62-53 advantage may have seemed secure as LSCPA would take a nine-point lead into the last two minutes but missed Port Arthur free throws made it harder for the Seahawks to seal the deal. Brian Sanders led the North Lake score sheet with 19 points followed by Jordan Alexander with 13. Lamar State College Port Arthur missed six foul shots in the last two minutes -- as in six of eight. "We didn't make our free throws down the stretch, but any time you can do that and survive, that's good," Bryson said.

  17. kogt The LCM girls soccer team traveled to Hardin-Jefferson on Tuesday and beat the Hawks 2-1. Fourteen minutes into the second half, junior Ellen Williams, one of the team's fastest players, received a pass from freshman Emily Hughes to score from 15 yards out. Hughes then connected on a penalty kick three minutes later to give the Lady Bears a 2-0 lead. The Lady Hawks responded with a forceful offensive effort throughout the second half. The Lady Hawks scored a goal at the 23 minute mark. The Lady Bears' defense, led by juniors Ashley Mayeux and Amber Soileau, was able to preserve the win by shutting out the Lady Hawks for the remainder of the game. The game marked the beginning of the second half of district play for the fourth-place Lady Bears.
  18. kogt Unfortunate Ending To Incredible Game The Orangefield Lady Bobcats were on life support and should've had their plug pulled in the fourth quarter down by 17 to the 34-3 Navasota Rattlers. But they fought back with clutch scoring and great defense to pull within two when KK Little was fouled as time expired, or so we thought. One second was put back on the clock at some point as Little made all three free throws to give OF an improbable 62-61lead. The girls on the OF bench began to celebrate and some of them were two to three feet on the court when the ref called a technical on the Bobcats. WITH ONE SECOND...IN A PLAYOFF GAME! Navasota's Brateicka Mock missed the first free throw and then hit the second to send the game into overtime. It was obvious the Lady Cats were spent as the Rattlers outscored them 14-7 in OT to take a 76-69 win and a trip to the Regional Tournament. Little finished her outstanding career at Orangefield with 30 points, including 15 straight free throws in the fourth quarter and overtime. Junior Olivia Wagner scored 21 including three 3-pointers. Jessica Weldon scored all six of her points in the fourth quarter during the comeback. The Lady Bobcats, under first year coach Chris Jost, finish the season 23-11.
