  5. Hard-nose Bobcats rough up Trojans Van Wade The Orange Leader WOODVILLE — Utilizing a stingy defense and the hot hand of junior guard Tyler Angelle, the Orangefield Bobcats steadily had their foot across the throats of the Coldspring Trojans Tuesday night in their Class 3A Region III bidistrict playoff game at Woodville High School. Angelle fired in 20 of his game-high 24 points in the first half, enabling the Bobcats to gain control as Orangefield went on to sink the Trojans 66-55. Next up for the Bobcats, the fourth-ranked Navasota Rattlers in the area round Friday night at 7:30p.m. at Cleveland High School. Orangefield (23-9) led by as much as 52-33 early in the fourth period and held off the Trojans (22-10), who got as close as 62-55 with 0:39 left. Orangefield coach Rea Wrinkle was thrilled about the huge victory. “The kids put forth a massive effort tonight against an excellent team,†said Wrinkle. “They came out early and set a good pace and never showed any jitters. It was a superb team effort on both ends of the floor.†The Bobcat defense held Coldspring leading scorers in post James Scott and guard Chad Allen in check for most of the game. Both players averaged 14 points a game coming in. Scott, who got saddled with three fouls at the beginning of the second period, finished with 10 points and eight rebounds while Allen had 13 points and five boards, with eight of his points coming in the final six minutes. “Defensively, we knew we had to clamp down on those two guys and for the most part, we did that,†Wrinkle said. “We got them in early foul trouble by taking it strong to the basket. Once we did that, it opened up our outside game too.†Angelle had plenty of offensive help from his Bobcat teammates. Senior guard Jared Helton, who did well checking Allen, finished with 14 points. Helton was 9-of-14 from the free-throw line and tied senior post Jeremy Granger as they both had seven rebounds apiece. Sophomore Zach Hayes popped in 12 points to aid the Bobcat cause. Angelle set the tone early when he got loose for nine points in the first period. Granger hit three free throws and Hayes had a bucket as the Bobcats led 14-11 at the end of the quarter. The Trojans had no answer for Angelle to start the second period as the hot-shooting guard set the tone in the period when he unleashed two straight three-point bombs with one of them turning out to be a four-point play after he was fouled. Helton pitched in by tallying six points in the quarter. “Tyler, what more can you say, he was in a zone,†said Wrinkle. “When he gets hot, he doesn't miss. Tyler didn't score against Jasper in our last game while Coldspring was scouting. They left him alone early and he made them count. And then he made them count when they were all over him.†Orangefield found itself up 33-23 at intermission with its superb defense as the Bobcats held Allen and Scott to just five first-half points. The Bobcats pounded away at the Trojans in the third period, taking off on a 16-8 spurt. Helton along with Derrick Evans and Casey Sparks off the bench, all buried three-pointers in the period while Hayes muscled his way inside for five points as Orangefield grabbed a 49-31 cushion heading to the fourth. A power move inside by Granger gave the Bobcats their biggest lead of the night at 52-33 with 6:58 left in the game. The Trojans, who outscored the Bobcats 24-17 in the fourth, kept whittling away at the lead ad a running jumper in the lane with 0:39 left got Coldspring to within 62-55 but it was too little, too late for the District 22-3A runnerups. The Trojans finished with a 42-30 rebounding edge. Zavius Johnson, a standout running back for the Trojan football unit, led his squad with a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Guard Eric Burch added 10 points and five boards for the Trojans. The Bobcats finished with 15 turnovers while Coldspring committed 16. Orangefield finished 22-of-32 from the free-throw line while the Trojans went just 7-of-14. Now the Bobcats turn to Navasota, which stands at 25-2. “It'll be a tough game for us, but this team has endured some tough games this year against some great competition,†Wrinkle said. “We've battled Silsbee and Hardin-Jefferson in some close games in district, probably the toughest district in the state. We know Navasota has excellent size and they have a super post man that is about 6-9.â€
  6. Unkown players fill LU picture 2008 LAMAR BASEBALL SEASON PREVIEW By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News BEAUMONT -- If you're a science fiction scaredy cat and fear of the unknown bothers your intellect, be careful with this 2008 Lamar baseball program. It's filled with unknowns all over Vincent-Beck Stadium's brand-new magic carpet. An all-weather synthetic Olympia turf was completed just in time for this month's pre-season workouts... even it contains a bit of an unknown element. Yet if Jim Gilligan thought his team would hold up as well as his new playing surface, the 31st-year Lamar head baseball coach probably would take his chances. With a new glitzy playing surface, and new bird logos everywhere, these Lamar players have to be good. Right? And since their rival coaches picked LU to retain the Southland Conference East Division regular-season title, the Redbirds have to be good, too. Right? With all of that going for them, the Cardinals are bound to be familiar to Gilligan. Right?....Uhhh, well... maybe in a few weeks... maybe a little better after this weekend's season-opening tournament at Texas-Pan American in Edinburg. Orientation time starts Friday with the opener of a 55-game regular season for several rookie pitchers, a mostly rookie infield and outfield. And yet these LUmen are supposed to win right away. "They picked us to win it," Gilligan mused last week. "What do you think of that?" Nearing his 1,100th career win as a head coach (1,035-647), the NCAA's 35th all-time winningest college baseball coach knows a thing or two about winning... just not with this group of players yet. "I think we can hit, field and throw," Gilligan summarized. "A lot of it comes down to how well we can compete. I think we're on track and I think this team will get progressively better... But I really thought we would be rated a lot lower." There has to be a starting point and Lamar realistically has to feel the loss to the pros of such players as Collin DeLome, Michael Ambort, Dan Hernandez, Ryan Baker, Allen Harrington and Erik Kanaby. Those amounted to the best players at their positions which Lamar has had in any era. Lamar has replaced proven talent with unproven talent in several spots, that's all there is to it. The adjustment to winning at the NCAA Division 1 level requires more time for some players than others. Only time will tell if the starting rotation of Brian Sisk, Justin Walker and Brian Needham will flourish. Combined with outstanding lefthanded closer Tim Erickson, Lamar has four pitchers with good skill who have put in the time. Another good lefty, Houston Baptist transfer Jay Prigmore, sounds as if he belongs right with them. "I feel confident in our starting pitching," the LU boss said. "It's a matter of who's coming out of the bullpen. The key is how we use Erickson. Right now, we can't afford to take him out of the bullpen. But I think the staff will have more depth than we had last year." A large handful of other key arms can go a long way toward making this a successful pitching staff, too. They include Matt Morgal, Matison Smith, Ricky Testa, Jim Niesuchouski, Ryne Nelson, Steven Havard, Matt Gore, Brad Depoy, and John Ross Ramirez. Some of those names may become more valuable as starters and others as relievers, but only time will tell. Because Ambort was recovering from elbow surgery, last year's primary catcher hopefully will be this year's primary catcher. Senior Jeff Vickers (.269-5-32) should hit in the middle of LU's lineup. The leading backup receiver is Richland JC transfer Ryan Saldivar. Unknowns are flooding the place for most of the remaining areas with a few exceptions. It's unknown whether power-hitting sophomore Keith Towne is ready to be the everyday first baseman. Lefthanded batting transfers Brian Taylor (Oklahoma State) and Jeremiah Sammy (Lon Morris JC) are the frontrunners at second base and shortstop with returning senior Travis Dunson available to replace either one. Third base belongs to either steady-fielding Nik Gumeson (Southern Idaho) or steady hitting Chris Dunkin (Alvin JC). Cisco JC speedster Anthony Moore offers the prototypical leadoff man with base-stealing ability and plenty of range in center fielder. Veteran slugger David Moore (.280-6-36) moves from right to left field in his senior year. Another Weatherford JC transfer (besides David Moore) may become the front runner to start in right field. He's lefthanded batting Steven Tucker.

  8. Bates presides over Lady Indians' win HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND -- Tuesday night constituted both a finish and a start of sorts of the Port Neches-Groves girls soccer team. The Lady Indians (9-5 and 7-2) completed the first half of their 20-4A schedule on a high note, defeating Silsbee 3-0 at Nederland's Prather Field. But it also turned into the first of hopefully many PN-G victory trails this winter for seventh-year head coach Aimee Bates. Out until last week on maternity leave, the PN-G girls coach returned in time for last Friday's Nederland game, but Nederland prevailed in a shootout in that outing. PN-G took command of a 2-0 halftime margin and got its season's seventh shutout win from junior goalkeeper Breane Martin. "We're in third place (in 20-4A) at the end of the first half by one shootout (to Nederland) and one goal (a 2-1 loss at Lumberton)," Bates said. "We're disappointed about the first half but the main thing is that we try to stay focused on playing our game." The Lady Indians scored in the opening minute when senior forward Victoria Williams finished off Jenna Rhame's crossing pass from just left of the 18-yard box. The PN-G girls made it 2-0 by the 15th minute when Marisa Elam's header came right after a Brittany Ansel corner kick. Rhame tapped in a cross from freshman outside midfielder Natalie Hager for PN-G's lone second-half goal. Baytown Sterling girls 10, Port Arthur Memorial 0 BAYTOWN -- Three-time all-district forward Shannon Allport surpassed the 20-goal season plateau with a hat trick, knocking in three scores and leading Baytown Sterling over Port Arthur Memorial 10-0 on Tuesday at Stallworth Stadium.
