[Hidden Content] Troubled North Forest ISD merging 2 high schools After years of debate, the North Forest school board agreed on Saturday to merge the district's two high schools next school year — a move expected to result in significant layoffs. The board also voted 5-0 to combine Tidwell and Hilliard elementary schools come August, as the northeast Houston district struggles to stay financially afloat and Texas Education Agency officials watch its every move. Trustees will close Tidwell Elementary but did not decide whether Forest Brook or Smiley High School would remain open. Both high schools are less than half-full this year, district officials said. Forest Brook is in better condition, but Smiley is larger, contains multiple athletic fields and is surrounded by open land if expansion is needed. Smiley, though, needs at least $6 million worth of renovations to get it up to standard, interim Superintendent William Jones said. Trustees did not say when they would decide which school would close. District officials estimate the school mergers would save about $6.9 million and result in the elimination of around 200 positions. Layoffs are unavoidable, though some of the affected employees will be placed at other schools if they don't retire or resign, said Ron Rowell, a senior TEA director who has been monitoring North Forest in recent weeks. Rowell said the mergers are necessary with the district facing a $17.2 million shortfall come August. Under state law, employees must be notified by April 2 if their contracts will not be renewed next year. The district has about 1,280 employees this school year and fewer than 8,300 students. North Forest officials acknowledge the district has been overstaffed for years, failing to significantly cut the number of employees as student enrollment has dropped. The board, facing an immediate financial crunch, did agree late last month to fire 45 employees; most were custodians and maintenance workers. Combining Forest Brook and Smiley has been a controversial subject in North Forest for years, with some alumni against the idea and parents worried about fights among students at the rival schools. James Green, an 11th-grade football player at Forest Brook, said he's not for a merger. "But I know it's something we need to do." His mom, Zelda Wiley, praised the decision. "I'm all for it," she said, adding that she hopes the students end up at Forest Brook. "We want to see our kids excel." Brenda McDaniels, who has one child at Forest Brook this year and one who will be a freshman next year, opposes the merger. "They don't listen to the taxpayers," she said of the board. "They do nothing but fight over there." Board members Allen Provost and Silvia Brooks Williams were absent from today's special meeting. Both have voted against the mergers previously, criticizing the administration for not getting community input and not giving trustees detailed information. Tidwell students have been attending Hilliard for most of this school year after serious mold problems were discovered at their campus. Forest Brook students also went to Smiley for part of this year while their vandalized campus underwent renovations. District officials said no major problems took place at Smiley, though students reported some fights.

Lamar Can't Contain UTA In 15-4 Loss Rubber game on Sunday at 1 p.m. March 15, 2008 ARLINGTON, Texas - Texas-Arlington scored 12 runs in the first three innings to defeat Lamar 15-4 at Clay Gould Ballpark Saturday. Lamar moved to 10-7 overall and 1-1 in Southland Conference play, while starter Brian Sisk (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing 11 runs in 2.0 innings. Andy Sauter (1-1) threw a complete-game and struck out five while allowing four runs on six hits for UTA (7-11, 1-1 SLC). Trailing 5-0 after two innings, Lamar scored three runs on three hits in the third to make it 5-3. Tyler Link led off with his second home run of the season. Following a walk to Anthony Moore and a double to left-center by Brian Taylor, Brent Harris drove in both runners with a single to left. UTA came back with seven runs in the bottom half of the inning and benefitted from a pair of Lamar miscues to go along with five hits. Taylor went 2-for-3 on the day to record his second multi-hit game of the year, while Steven Tucker saw his 10-game hit streak come to a close with an 0-for-3 game. Lady Cardinals Overwhelm TAMUCC with Big Second Half Lamar women advance to first ever Southland Conference Tournament Final March 14, 2008 KATY, Texas - The No. 4 seed Lamar University women's basketball team erupted for 46 second half points and ran away from the No. 8 seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders for a 63-50 win in the semi finals of the Southland Conference Tournament at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas. With the win Lamar improves to 19-12 on the year and advances to the first Southland Conference tournament final in school history. They will face the UTSA Roadrunners at 3 p.m. Saturday with a trip to the NCAA Tournament on the line. The Islanders finish the season with a 12-20 record. Trailing 18-17 at halftime, the Lady Cardinals opened the second half with an 11-0 run over the first 5:10 of the half to take control of the game. While the Lamar offense was starting to heat up their defense was in full lockdown mode, holding Corpus Christi without a field goal until the 12:57 mark of the second half. The strong defense continued for LU as they built their lead to 22 points at 47-25 with 7:22 to play. Lamar outscored Corpus 30-7 over the first 13 minutes of the second half. The Lady Cardinals capped off their second outburst with an Aida Bakhos layup which gave LU a 49-27 lead with 6:42 to play. Despite the big hole Lamar had put them in the Islanders made one last ditch effort to keep their season alive. Corpus Christi responded to the LU run with an 18-5 run over a five minute stretch to cut the deficit to nine points. After the game was cut down to a single digit lead for Lamar, the Lady Cardinals closed out the game on a 14-5 run to post the 63-50 win. Lamar was able to take full control of the game behind the strong second half offensive performances by Tamara Abalde and Nikki Williams. Abalde scored 15 and Williams added 10 over the final 20 minutes to pace LU to victory. After a dismal offensive performance in the first half the Lady Cards offense posted a 59.3 percent shooting percentage, while the defense held Corpus to just 34.5 percent from the field. In the first half both teams struggled to get their offense going. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi went 8-25 from the field for a 32 percent shooting percentage while the Lady Cardinals shot just 25.9 percent, sinking seven of their 27 shots. For the game Lamar was led by Nikki Williams 19 points, four assists and three steals, while Abalde finished the game with 18 points and seven rebounds. Bakhos also turned in a solid performance, scoring eight points and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. A&M-Corpus Christi was led by Shaye Montgomery's 11 points, while Jade Davis added eight points. Deziree Green and Adrienne Scott led the islanders in rebounding, pulling down six boards apiece. As a team the Lady Cardinals finished the game with a 42.6 shooting percentage while Corpus Christi shot 33.3 percent. Lamar also won the battle on the boards, out rebounding the Islanders 40 to 35.
