Region III-4A In Huntsville, Brenham used a victory in the final event to capture its second consecutive boys team title at the Class 4A Region III track meet at Sam Houston State University. The Cubs sat in third place behind Angleton and Beaumont Central entering the 1,600-meter relay. Of the three schools, only Brenham had a team entered. Brenham's quartet came home in 3:19.36, allowing the Cubs to finish with 76 points. Angleton ended up second with 66 points. "Everyone says track is not a team sport, but it is at Brenham," Cubs coach Jerry Newman said. "(The 1,600-relay team) needed to win that event, and they came through for us." The Brenham girls placed third with 50 points. Beaumont Ozen won the team crown with 60 points. Austin Johnson was second with 52. Dominique Duncan of Wheatley was the lone area double winner. Duncan recorded easy victories in the 100 (11.79 seconds) and 200 (23.88). Lizzy Whitney of Montgomery and Ryeea Whigham from Sharpstown each qualified for state in two events. Whitney captured the 800 in a time of 2:15.87 and placed second in the 400 at 56.04. Whigman won the 300 hurdles with a 45.47. She ran a 14.74 in the 100 hurdles, placing her second behind Beaumont Ozen's A'Lexus Brannon, who won three events. Chance Casey of Crosby and Bay City's D'Korion Ford traded first- and second-place finishes in the boys hurdles events. Ford won the 110 hurdles in 14.51, with Casey second in 14.47. In the 300 hurdles, Casey's 37.05 beat out Ford's time of 38.29. Seven Lakes reigned over the boys distance events. Chase Rathke won Friday's 3,200 final with a time of 9:22.21. Second and third went to teammates James Welin and Christopher Jessett. Jessett came back Saturday to take home the gold medal in the 1,600 at 4:16.97. Rathke was second, followed by Welin.

Lamar Drops Finale To Texas State, 8-1 Redbirds host Houston on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. April 27, 2008 SAN MARCOS, Texas - Lamar was unable to pull off a sweep of Texas State as the Bobcats scored the first eight runs in an 8-1 win at Bobcat Field Sunday. Lamar is now 26-17 overall and 14-7 in Southland Conference play, and a half-game behind Northwestern State for the lead in the SLC's East Division. Texas State improves to 28-14 and 14-7. Six Cardinal pitchers couldn't keep the Bobcats off the bases as Texas State reached base 18 times via 12 hits and six walks. Lamar stranded seven runners to Texas State's eight. Texas State scored single runs in the first, second and sixth innings, two in the fifth and three in the eighth. Steven Tucker went 2-for-4 with a single and a double to lead the Lamar offense. Nik Gumeson drove in the lone LU run with a single in the ninth after Chris Dunkin walked and Travis Dunson doubled to lead off the inning. Zack Tritz (8-1) struck out four and scattered eight hits in earning the win for the Bobcats. Lamar starter Ryne Nelson (2-1) suffered the loss after facing just two batters. He walked the first batter and allowed a single to Elliott Babcock that put runners at the corners. Matt Gore came on in relief and lasted three innings - the longest of any of the LU hurlers - and was charged with one run on four hits. Lamar will return home for a four-game homestand, beginning Tuesday against Houston (26-17). First pitch at Vincent-Beck Stadium is set for 6:30 p.m. The Cardinals will play host to Southeastern Louisiana in a weekend series with Friday's lid-lifter starting at 6:30 p.m.

Ky. Busch nabs second Cup victory of year with win under caution at Talladega TALLADEGA, Ala. -- Kyle Busch won at Talladega Superspeedway, coasting to victory Sunday when a caution came out on the final lap and froze the field. It allowed Busch to slowly make his way across the finish line for his second Sprint Cup win of the season, and seventh overall spanning NASCAR's top three series. Juan Pablo Montoya finished second for his career-best finish on an oval since moving to NASCAR from Formula One. Denny Hamlin, Busch's teammate at Joe Gibbs Racing, was third. Tony Stewart, Gibbs' third driver, led a race-high 61 laps but was once again denied a Talladega Cup win when he wrecked with 14 laps to go. He's 0-for-20 at Talladega.
