Sisk Fans Seven To Lead Lamar Past SE Louisiana, 3-1 Vickers' 2-run double in the first put Lamar up for good May 2, 2008 Lamar scored two runs in the first inning and that was all Brian Sisk needed as he struck out seven in 7.2 innings in leading the Cardinals to a 3-1 win over Southeastern Louisiana in the first game of a Southland Conference series at Vincent-Beck Stadium on Friday. Sisk (8-2) scattered seven hits and recorded six of his strikeouts over his final eight outs before yielding the mound to closer Tim Erickson with two on and two out in the eighth. Erickson struck out the only batter he faced in the inning and retired the side in order in the ninth on nine pitches for his ninth save of the year. The win moved Lamar (27-18, 15-7 SLC) into sole possession of first place in the SLC East Division as Northwestern State lost at Sam Houston State, 5-1. SE Louisiana (23-21, 10-12 SLC) remained in third place in the East following its third-consecutive league loss and fourth overall. Steven Tucker went 3-for-4 with a double and scored Lamar's second run in the first inning. Jeff Vickers collected two hits and drove in a pair as he extended his hitting streak to four games. Tyler Link led off the game with a single to right field and moved to second on a Tucker single, before a Travis Dunson walk loaded the bases with one out. Vickers then knocked a double through the 15 mile-per-hour wind and onto the warning track to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. Southeastern cut the lead in half in the fourth when Josh Cryer singled and moved to third on a double by Chris Ernest. Cryer came home on a Casey Summerlin ground ball that shortstop Travis Dunson threw to third to retire Ernest on a fielder's choice. The Cardinals added their third run in the fifth inning with two outs to extend the lead to 3-1. Brian Taylor walked on four pitches, moved to second on a single by Tucker and scored a Dunson single through the left side. Brent Vernado (2-3) suffered the loss for the Lions. He allowed all three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts. He threw 133 pitches in seven innings of work. The same two teams will play on Saturday at 2 p.m. with Justin Walker (1-2, 4.96) slated to start for Lamar and Wade Miley (6-3, 3.60) scheduled to take the hill for Southeastern.

Report: Kobe earns first MVP LOS ANGELES -- Kobe Bryant has won the NBA's MVP award for the first time, the Los Angeles Times reported on its Web site Friday night, citing anonymous sources familiar with the outcome of voting by media members. The newspaper reported that commissioner David Stern will be in Los Angeles next week to present the trophy to Bryant. "We have not been told anything by the league," Lakers spokesman John Black told The Associated Press. Bryant, who entered the season as the league's two-time defending scoring champion, had finished third in the MVP voting twice -- after the 2002-03 campaign, when he averaged 30 points for the first time, and again last season, when Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki won the award. Bryant averaged 28.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.84 steals while playing in all 82 games despite tearing a ligament in his right pinkie finger in February. A hand specialist recommended surgery, but Bryant decided to put it off until after the Olympics this summer. He led the Lakers to the best record in the Western Conference and a sweep of Denver in the first round of the playoffs. The Lakers open the second round Sunday against Utah at Staples Center. Bryant, second in the NBA in scoring behind Cleveland's LeBron James, will be the first Lakers player to win the MVP award since Shaquille O'Neal was a near-unanimous choice in 2000. Other previous Lakers to win the award dating to 1956, when it was first presented, were Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson, who each won it three times. Abdul-Jabbar also won three with the Milwaukee Bucks.
