HCC board approves student fee to fund athletic program The Houston Community College System took a huge step towards establishing an intercollegiate athletic program when its board of trustees unanimously voted Tuesday to assess a student fee to fund an intramural program. Under terms of the resolution, students at each of the system’s six campuses would be charged up to $6 extra per semester, effective in the spring of 2009. The fee is expected to bring in an estimated $224,000 per semester, money which would be spent entirely on the intramural program. An athletic director, coaches and other personnel would have to compensated by HCCS. Because the fee won’t go into effect until next spring, the board voted to begin the intramural program that semester, instead of this fall. The athletic committee will meet Aug. 21 to set the fee amount, and the board will convene Aug. 28 to vote on that measure. “It feels great,†said trustee Neeta Sane, chair of the athletic committee. “Students are excited, and we are basically doing what’s right for the students and in the best interests of HCC.†The initial program would have men’s and women’s basketball, soccer and volleyball. The trustees also agreed that they would continue to examine the possibility of elevating the intramural program into an intercollegiate program. -
Bolton returns to help guide LC-M offense Van Wade The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Troy Bolton is back in business. Make that ‘Orange County†business. Bolton, who has led local charges onto the field of play over the years, mainly at Bridge City High School, will help call to offensive plays at Little Cypress-Mauriceville next season for fourth-year head coach Todd Moody. Bolton returns to the area after serving one year as offensive coordinator at Brazosport High School. Bolton coached at LC-M for five years in an earlier stint at the school and was also a coach at Bridge City for more than a decade. “I’m so glad to be home,†said Boton. “I never sold my house and felt like I would always get back to this area.†Bolton is looking forward to working with Moody and the Bear staff. “I’m glad Coach Moody gave me this opportunity,†Bolton said. “There are a bunch of great kids at LC-M, I know that first-hand. I can’t wait to get back to work and get the ball rolling.†Moody is thrilled to have a veteran coach on the Battlin’ Bear staff. “Troy is a tremendous addition to our staff,†expressed Moody. “He’s got a great mind and will be a tremdous asset to us on the offensive side of the ball. From what I understand, he’s really great with kids and is a good motivator. We’re proud to have him.†Bolton knows what it’s like to be in hard-nosed, tough districts over the years at Bridge City and LC-M. He definitely knows how strong District 20-4A is from top to bottom with the likes of LC-M, Vidor, Port Neches-Groves, Nederland, Beaumont Central, Beaumont Ozen and new addition Livingston, which was in the playoffs last year. “There is no such thing as an easy game in our district and I’ve seen some great games over the years out of all those teams,†Bolton said. “I’m just moving from tough district to another. Last year in Brazosport, we were lining up against the likes Texas City, LaMarque and Friendswood. Our local district is just as tough as that or even tougher.†Bolton is just one of several local coaches that have returned to their roots. Toby Foreman will return to West Orange-Stark to help on the offensive side of the ball and coach track again after ˙eading to Baytown Lee last year. LC-M graduate Mike Stewart, who was the head coach at Lulig the last two years, leading that school to back-to-back playoff spots, is the new offensive coordinator at Orangefield. Josh Smalley departed as Orangefield offeisve coordinator to return to his alma mater in Bridge City where he will be the offensive coordinator there. Chad Landry, who coached baseball at Hamshire-Fannett the last five seasons, is now the head baseball coach at Bridge City. Callie Orebo, who led the WO-S Lady Mustangs to three regional tournament appearances in basketball, will return to her head-coaching duties after stepping down for a year last season.

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- The ball that Barry Bonds launched for his record-breaking 756th home run won't land in the Hall of Fame. The Hall announced Tuesday that talks with fashion designer Marc Ecko, who bought the souvenir for more than $750,000 last September, had "unfortunately reached an impasse." "The owner's previous commitment to unconditionally donate the baseball has changed to a loan. As a result, the Hall of Fame will not be able to accept the baseball," the Hall said.

WO-S graduate Johnson places sixth in trials
KFDM COOP posted a topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
WO-S graduate Johnson places sixth in trials Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader Brandon Johnson might not be headed to Bejing, China this Summer yet you will never hear the 2003 West Orange-Stark graduate complain. Johnson placed sixth this weekend in the 400-meter hurdles at the US Olympic Trials held at the University of Oregon, not enough to make the Olympic team. This was the first time Johnson has attended the US Olympic Trials and was thrilled with the experience. “Four years ago I went to the World Juniors and I have also ran in the USA Championships,†Johnson said. “This was totally different. It was more stressful this year. You know it is the best in the country and our country is the best in the world. I realized I was running against the best in the world.†Johnson ran a 48.72 in the finals on Sunday to place sixth. Johnson was eighth after Friday’s preliminaries and was in seventh after Saturday’s semi-finals with a time of 48.68. Friday his time was 50.11. “I was sitting on the edge of my chair,†Verill Young said. Young coached Johnson for three years at WO-S. “I thought he ran exceptionally well. Brandon is young in sprinters age. I look forward to seeing him in the Olympic trials and in the Olympics in 2012.†Johnson said he was never upset with his time all weekend and that he will have to watch the US Team on television. “It was a very trying weekend for me,†Johnson added. “I can’t be too upset with what I did. I am still young and I look forward to 2012. There is no shame in placing sixth in the United States. I am satisfied with myself.†Johnson will now work on improving his world ranking in the hurdles before the next Olympic Trials are held. “I plan on going to run somewhere in Europe,†Johnson said. “I am really not sure of my schedule just yet. My short-term goal is to work on my world ranking. At the end of the season, I want to be ranked above people who competed at the Olympics.†Johnson has received a lot of messages here recently from Orange in support of his efforts. “I have been checking messages on the phone and on Facebook,†Johnson said. “The Gay family has been real supportive and so has some others in Orange. That is always a great thing to hear from people in Southeast Texas.†Young said Johnson was one of the best men, not just athletes, he has ever coached. “He was and is an excellent young man,†Young added. “Brandon always had a tremendous work habit and that is obvious with the success he is having. At one point he was No. 5 in the hurdles while at UCLA. I always used to tell scouts that I have three daughters and if I could choose their husband - he would be the one I choose.â€
