Diamond players shine in college life Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader The high level of play on the baseball diamond does not stop at high school for Southeast Texas athletes. Just this past Friday two former Orange County players put on a nice display as McNeese State downed Northwestern State, 5-4. Former West Orange-Stark Mustang Brad Becker had the game’s winning walk and also added a three-run home run. Former Bridge City Cardinal Derek Blacksher got the win on the hill going the complete game giving up six hits, two earned runs and two walks to go with 13 strike outs. Becker is hitting .237 on the year with four doubles, three homers and 11 RBI. Blacksher is carrying a 6.00 ERA with a 2-4 mark in 54 innings pitched with four strike outs, which is second on the team, and 14 walks. Also in the game was Northwestern’s Knox McCorquodale, who graduated from Little Cypress-Mauriceville. McCorquodale failed to get on base in his only plate appearance on Friday is batting .234 on the year in 47 at bats to go with a double, a homer and eight RBI. Over at Lamar University two Cardinals are from the Orange County area who have seen some time on the field. LC-M grad Matt Gore has thrown in 8 1/3 innings in six appearances and has a 6.48 ERA with a 0-1 record. Gore has walked 15 batters and struck out 12 but batters are only hitting .172. Jordan Thibodeaux, who is out of WO-S, has only made one appearance and worked just 2/3 innings. He walked and struck out two batters. East Texas Baptist University’s Randy Jennings, out of Bridge City, is batting .250 in 20 at bats. In the softball world, University of Louisiana-Lafayette’s Meagan Godwin, who is from Bridge City, is batting .229 and has participated in 41 games and started 25 with 105 at bats. She has 22 hits, six doubles, two homers, 20 RBI and also has four steals in four attempts. The most highly decorated softball player going right now is LSU’s Cody Trahan from LC-M. Trahan pitched a gem last week against McNeese in front of many fans from Southeast Texas and she did not disappoint. She threw a complete game three-hitter, striking out 10 and walking three in the Lady Tigers 6-0 victory. Trahan has been in five games this season as a freshman, starting four and completing four. She has thrown 27 innings allowing just eight hits, one run and 10 walks to go with 45 strike outs and batters are hitting just .095 against her. Her ERA is perfect at 0.00.
