Nederland takes home OF Relay championship Van Wade The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — There were two dominating team performances at the 33rd annual Bobcat Relays Friday as the Nederland boys strolled to the team championship and the Nederland Lady Bulldogs cruised to win the girls division. The Lady Bulldogs, who racked up 201.5 points, won going away, easily outdistancing second-place Port Neches-Groves (113.5). The Bulldog boys won the team title with 164 points, nipping Bridge City, which had 154. The Cardinals placed second in the 1,600-meter relay but were disqualified due to breaking out of their lane, enabling the Bulldogs to walk away from the Bobcat track with the biggest hardware. It was still a tremendous day for the Cardinals. Bridge City's 400-meter relay unit of Paeton Landry, Cody Mills, Jerry Landry and Cody Read won with a time of 44.68. Mills would later claim the 100 meters in 11.09 seconds. The same quartet won the 800-meter relay in 1: 33.88. Bridge City won a pair of thrillers in the middle distance races. Cardinal Logan Stewart and Nederland's Phillip Rogers had quite a showdown in the 800 meters as Stewart held on for the win, running a 2:00.31 while Rogers had a 2:00.48. BC's Kevin Young snagged first in the 400 meters with a 50.50, nipping Nederland's John Krautz (50.72) and Orangefield's Caleb Worthy (50.90). The 3,200 meters were all "red" as Cardinal Ryan Kelly claimed the 3,200 in 10:54.17 and Lady Cardinal Erica Garza won in 12:57.51. Little Cypress-Mauriceville's Drew Bean ran a very workmanlike 1,600 meters as he's getting prepared for the upcoming Texas Relays. Bean paced himself well and then hurried his pace in the last two as he won the event in 4: 32.38. On the girls' side Orangefield's Laura Riddick blazed to the 100-meter hurdles win, running a 16.40, winning the event by more than two seconds. Lady Bobcat Kaylin Little captured the 400 meters in 1:05.02. In the field events, Little Cypress-Mauriceville's David Sicktich stormed to the title in the discus, heaving a personal best of 157 feet, 3 inches. Sicktich, a standout basketball player for the Bears last season, likes competing with the so-called "big guys" of track and field. "Most of the guys I compete against are football players and they joke around with me and we have a good time out there," said Sicktich. "Sometimes it isn't about how big you are, it's all a matter of focus and technique." Sicktich is preparing for what should be an entertaining District 22-4A meet in a couple weeks. "There are a couple guys, one from Ozen and one for Central, that have thrown around 156 feet so I'm really happy with what I accomplished today. It's a confidence boost. I really got off a good one and I felt I got off the best spin ever and it just hung up there for me." Cardinal senior Johnny Dishon continues to shine in the jumping events. He captured the triple jump with a new Southeast Texas-leading mark of 45-7 1/4 and also claimed the long jump in 22 feet before rushing off to play centerfield for BC in a big District 21-3A baseball encounter with Silsbee. The Vidor duo of Jason Williamson and Jared Parker got some nice "air" in their events to nab first-place medals. Williamson won the high jump with a 6-4 effort while Parker continues to excel in the pole vault, going 13-6. Bridge City senior Clinton DeRouen, fresh off squatting 725 pounds in power lifting meets this season, won the shot put with a heave of 44 feet. On the girls' side Lady Cardinal Brittany Myers jumped a personal best of 16-6 to capture the long jump. High-point girls honors went to PN-G sprinter Hayley English, who tallied 33 points and the high-point boy was Vidor’s Derek Worthy, who tallied 28 points.

Student killed by lightning at high school track meet 04:03 PM CDT on Friday, March 30, 2007 Associated Press CARBONDALE, Ill. -- A lightning strike killed a high school runner as he left a pole vault pit shortly before a track meet, the county coroner said. "It came out of nowhere," said Scott Hankey, Carbondale Community High School's baseball coach, whose team was preparing for a game nearby. "There was a very, very light rain. There wasn't anything in the way of dark clouds. It didn't look anything like a thunderstorm." Corey Williams, 18, was returning to the main track area from the pole vault pit about 4 p.m. when the lightning bolt hit him. Coaches and others tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead by the time he reached a hospital. Thomas Kupferer, Jackson County's coroner, confirmed that lightning killed the teenager. When Williams was struck, National Weather Service radar showed some lightning in the area, but it was not considered significant enough to issue an advisory or warning, meteorologist Mike Nadolksi said Friday. More than 200 people attended a candlelight vigil for Williams on Thursday night, and classes at the school were canceled Friday to give the students time to grieve. Williams' mother, Vanessa Webb, shared hugs with dozens of the students. "This was my son. Why did this happen?" she said. Classmate Robert Krajewski described Williams as laid back and "just a really nice guy."
