Three Lamar Cross Country Runners Set to Run at Nationals Kasagule represent Cardinal men, Graham and Koenck run for the women Nov. 18, 2007 TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Three runners from Lamar University will run at the NCAA Cross Country Championship in Terre Haute, Ind., on Monday afternoon as Renee Graham makes her third trip to the national meet, Francis Kasagule makes his second trip and Clerc Koenck makes her NCAA Championship debut. The men race gets things started with a 10,000 meter race at 12:05 p.m., with the women's 6,000 meter race following at 12:55 p.m. Both championship races will be broadcast on CSTV. Kasagule, a native of Gayhza, Uganda, qualified for his second trip to the national meet with a second place finish at the South Central Regional last weekend in Fayetteville, Ark. turning in a 29:23.4 performance over 10K. At the Pre-National meet in mid October, Kasagule posted a ninth place finish in a time of 23:33 over 8K. Last year Kasagule earned All-American honors with a 29th place finish at the NCAA championship. He ran the 10,000 meter course in a time of 31:34.9 to become the first Lamar University runners to earn All American honors. Koenck, a native of Anacoco, La., is making her first trip to the NCAA championship in her senior season. She punched her ticket to the meet with a fourth place finish at the regional meet, running the 6K course in a time of 20:51.3. At the Pre National meet she picked up her first title of the season with a 20:56.6 performance over 6k. "This year is my last go round for everything, and I want to make the most of my senior year," Koenck said. "I don't to have any regrets when it's all over. My goal was to qualify for nationals and I want to make it into the top 100. I want to enjoy the moment, but run the best that I can." Graham, a junior from Hawera, New Zealand, earned her third straight tip to the NCAA's by virtue of an at large bid after she finished in 11th place at the regional meet. She ran 21:12.8 over 6K and was selected to go to nationals after the Baylor team earned an at large bid. In her previous two trips to the national meet Graham finished in 154th and 126th place. As a freshman she posted a time of 21:38 over 6K, then improved by 28 spots with a 22:20.7 performance as a sophomore. Earlier this season at Pre-Nationals she finished in third place with a 6K time of 21:04.5. "I knew making it back to nationals would be tough because there are so many good individuals in the region," Graham said. "I'm glad Baylor got an at large bid so I could go back. Now I have two goals. I want to run faster than I did at Pre Nationals and I want to finish in the top 100. I think those are pretty realistic goals."

Lady Cardinals Basketball Hosts William Carey Monday at 4 p.m. James Naismith's original rules of basketball on display on Montagne concourse Nov. 18, 2007 BEAUMONT - As the Lamar University women's basketball team prepares to host the Lady Saders of William Carey on Monday afternoon at 4 p.m., Lady Cardinals fans can prepare to see history as James Naismith's original rules of basketball will be on display on the Montagne Center upper concourse. Naismith created the game of basketball in 1891 and the original rules were devised in 1892. In 1959, James Naismith was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, called the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame. Fans can visit the display before and after the women's game against William Carey and will also have the opportunity to visit the exhibit before and after men's game against Wyoming which tips off at 7 p.m. The men's game is being billed as the `can the Cowboys' game, in which fans who bring a canned good to the game will receive a half price ticket. "For Lamar University to have the opportunity to display the original rules of basketball at the Montagne Center is very special," women's head coach Larry Tidwell said. "This display is only going to be available for public viewing for short time before it goes to the Smithsonian Museum. We are honored to have it here." The Lady Cardinals enter Monday's game with a 2-2 record, on the heels of a 58-43 win over the Texas Southern Tigers in Houston on Saturday evening. The win snapped a two game skid in which LU fell to Big XII foes Oklahoma State and Texas on Monday and Thursday. The Lady Cards have been led by sophomore Brittney Williams who is averaging 13.8 points per game, while freshman Tamara Abalde is averaging 13 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Junior Nikki Williams is averaging 11.3 points per game and Aida Bakhos has been strong on the boards, averaging 7.8 rebounds per game. William Carey enters the game with a 1-1 record after a season opening win over Concordia College and a loss at the University of Auburn-Montgomery. The Lady Saders defeated Concordia 60-54 on November 7, and fell to Montgomery 51-40 on November 13. After Monday's game the Lady Cardinals will return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Wiley College at 4:00 at the Montagne Center. The women's game will tip off a double header with the LU men who take on Oral Roberts at 7 p.m.

Hard-to-believe Seahawks KO Lee, 77-66 The Port Arthur News Besides becoming an All-America basketball player at Lamar in Beaumont, Don Bryson has authored a true labor of love in his four years of starting up a Lamar-Port Arthur men’s program. Bryson was really rewarded on Saturday night when Lamar State College Port Arthur treated its homecoming night followers to a memorable event in the infancy stages of a new college basketball history. Lamar State College Port Arthur blurted out to an early 8-0 advantage and led the entire game while capturing a 77-66 upset victory of heavily favored Lee College in the Carl Parker Center. Returning home from back-to-back road losses at Panola and San Jacinto College, Bryson had watched the season’s first seven games reduce his roster to as little as seven players by mid-week. “This has got to be the school’s biggest win ever,†Bryson said after celebrating with players and well-wishers. The victory evened LSCPA’s modest season record at 4-4 while Lee College dropped to 4-1. The Runnin’ Rebels had walloped LSCPA, 95-74, in Baytown two weeks ago. A key to LSCPA’s victory was the Seahawks’ ability to keep Port Arthur Memorial 6-7 freshman Dominique Keller way below his average. Keller ended the night with 17 points after entering the outing with a 30-point average. “That was a big part of this victory plus we did a great job on the boards,†Bryson said. “They beat us 20 over there and they shot it extremely well that night (Nov. 3). They didn’t shoot it that well early tonight.†Another ingredient in LSCPA’s surprising triumph was that two valuable members of the Seahawks returned from the inactive list. Beaumont Ozen product Andre “Peanut†Boutte returned from a neck injury while Little Cypress-Mauriceville import Seth “Big Bear†Harley devoted two days of working in the training room to rehabilitate an ankle injury. The return of Boutte and Harley increased Bryson’s list of available bodies from seven to nine. “We just kept on playing our game and I’m extremely proud of them,†Bryson said. The Seahawks opened up a 39-29 halftime lead and fattened it to 18 points with nine minutes to go. Noah Cole led LSCPA’s scorers with 18 points followed by Harley at 15, George Williamson at 13, Boutte at 10 and Cody Guidry at 10. Guidry topped Port Arthur’s rebounders with 10. Hollis Giles paced Lee College with 22 points. A victory in Lamar-Port Arthur’s next game might even be more improbable. The Seahawks play a Monday night game at 7 o’clock against undefeated Temple College (7-0).
