  3. Humble downs Deer Park, advances in 5A Wildcats get first postseason win since 2005; Malone runs for 128, two TDs Jarrett Malone has been sick for about a week and he missed three practices because of it, but there was little that was going to keep the senior running back from playing Friday night. Humble's go-to guy fought through his flu-like symptoms and gave the Wildcats a valiant effort to lead them to a 16-7 win over Deer Park in the Class 5A Division I Region III bi-district round at Turner Stadium. The Wildcats (9-2) earned their first playoff victory since 2005 and advance to the area round where they'll face Hightower. "I had to play hard," Malone said. "I guess when you get sick you play your hardest." Malone ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries, but it was the way he ran that inspired the Wildcats. Several times, Malone willed his way to more yards by keeping his legs moving and dragging several Deer Park defenders with him. "He ran as hard as he could even though he wasn't 100 percent," Humble coach Walt Beasley said. "I didn't even know before the game if he was going to play, but he gave it all he had, played hard and ran hard." The defense battled with that same spirit. The Wildcats held the Deer (8-3) to 205 yards on the night and became the first team to hold the Deer under 10 points since Spring did it in the season opener on August 31. "The secondary played well and we got a few breaks too," Beasley said. "They're a good football team and they dropped a few passes that we got lucky on." It wasn't the Wildcats best night though. In their first three trips to the red zone, they only came out with nine points. They opened the game with a 27-yard field goal by Audran Cruz in the first, then got a 3-yard touchdown from Malone after blocking a Deer Park punt. They looked poised to go up 16-0 at the half but Deer Park's Nathan Kello intercepted Keith Baker at the 1 with less than a minute remaining in the second quarter to kill that scoring chance. Deer Park creeped back into the game on the legs of Travis Carter (22 carries, 98 yards) who ran eight straight times to start a scoring drive that ended in a 17-yard touchdown pass from Hans Cook to Keenan Miles to cut the deficit to 9-7 with 28 seconds to go in the third. But that would be all the Deer would get. The Wildcats forced the Deer to turn it over on downs on their next drive and recovered a fumble on their final possession.

  9. Cardinals fast break past Lumberton Van Wade The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — They are certainly still a work in progress but the Bridge City Cardinals certainly look like they’re making strides under the guidance of first-year head coach Tony Knight. The Cardinals gave Coach Knight his first hoop victory at his alma mater Friday afternoon by darting past the Lumberton Raiders 70-46 at Cardinal Gym. The Cardinals (1-1) darted out to a quick 15-3 lead after one period of play and continued to pull away from the Raiders (0-2). Bridge City had a solid inside-outside game from the opening tip to the final horn. Post Corey Smith bulldozed his way inside for a game-high 21 points while also snagging five rebounds and power forward Adam Sanchez pumped in 14 points and five rebounds. Guard Jason Clark was hot from the outside as he buried three three-pointers to score 17 points and he also led the Cardinals with seven rebounds. “It’s always good to get that first win under your belt,†Knight said. “The kids played with much better intensity tonight than they did in the loss to Port Neches on Tuesday.†Knight also enjoyed the way the Cardinals moved the ball around in the victory. “We settled for the three-pointer against PN-G, I think we took about 22 of them, we can’t do that and be sucessful,†Knight said. “Today, the ball movement was strong. We were able to get Corey and Adam involved early and it paid dividends for us. That’s the type of team we want to be.†The Cardinals have already reached half of their win total of a season ago in which they won just two games. Their confidence level after two games seems to be much higher. “I’m certainly seeing more hustle out of the kids but there is so much room for improvement and I think they realize that,†said Knight. “I see a lot more diving for loose balls and getting teammates more involved. Everybody gave us pretty good minutes today.†Clark and Smith teamed up for 13 points in the first quarter as the Cardinals gained plenty of momentum early. The Cardinals were able to take a commanding 33-16 lead heading into intermission as Smith pumped in six points in the second quarter and Clark and Jaden Dillon, who had seven points and five rebounds, tallied five points apiece. Both teams were hot in the third period with the Cardinals outscoring the Raiders 20-16 in the period to go up 53-32 heading to the fourth. Smith bulled his way to six more points in the period. Sanchez scored six of his 14 points in the final eight minutes as the Cardinals continued to pull away. Andrew Hall and Kevin Kronke paced the Raider attack with nine points apiece while Kris Koch. The Cardinals finished with a commanding 37-24 edge in the rebounding department. Sophomore point guard Tyler Hyde grabbed six rebounds while Sanchez and Smith yanked down five apiece. Hall had six boards for the Raiders. Bridge City finished with 16 turnovers while the Raiders had 14. The Cardinals went just 5-of-14 from the free-throw line while Lumberton went 15-of-27. The Cardinals return to action Tuesday night when they play host to the Deweyville Pirates.
  10. Little, Lady Bobcats crush Kountze Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — Even after a 77-48 victory over Kountze, Orangefield Coach Chris Jost is still looking for more consistency out of the Lady Bobcats. There were spurts of turnovers and missed lay-ups yet Orangefield (3-1) did enough to keep Kountze (2-1) at bay. Senior Kaylin Little poured in a game-high 38 points to go with five rebounds and seven steals and several times showed a ton of hustle which Lady Bobcats’ basketball is known for. “I’m very excited after a victory like this,†Little said. “We didn’t play good defense in the first half but we started to there at the end.†The Orangefield defense forced 35 turnovers from Kountze who got a team-high 17 points from Kayla Hargraves. Several Lady Bobcats had great nights on defense as Olivia Wagner had five steals and Aimee Scales Marissa Wyatt each finished with three. Scales had eight points and four rebounds while Jessica Weldon added six points and three boards. Wagner also had five points and five rebounds. Orangefield took a 14-7 lead into the second period and opened the frame on a seven-point run as Little scored five and Laura Riddick knocked down two free throws making it 21-7. Riddick finished the night with 10 points, three assists, three rebounds and five steals. “Laura Riddick played a very solid game tonight,†Jost said. “Even at the end of the game she was diving and getting to loose balls.†Kountze’s Shaquadra Smith stopped the Lionettes bleeding with a bucket before Orangefield went on to score the game’s next six points. In the second the Lady Bobcats opened a 29-12 lead only to see the Lionettes got on a 6-0 spurt to close to within 29-18. The Lady Bobcats closed out the first half on a 6-0 run taking a 35-18 lead into the half. “We finished strong and really that is what we are looking for,†Jost said. “We made enough plays all game to stay ahead. The game really was a lot closer than the score. We have to become more consistent on both sides of the ball.†Orangefield retained its lead in the third but Kountze outscored the Lady Bobcats 15-14. The fourth period was all Orangefield as the Lady Bobcats went off for 28 points, Little scoring 12 in the game’s final eight minutes. The Lady Bobcats do not have much time to rest as they will play host to Nederland on Monday before heading to the 20th Annual Lovelady Girls Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament. “I think we have a pretty good team this year,†Little said. “We still have a lot to learn and help teach the underclassmen. That is what these non-district games are for.â€
