WO-S boys, Barbers Hill girls rule Cardinal Relays Van Wade The Orange Leader The Orange Leader Sat Mar 19, 2011, 05:27 PM CDT BRIDGE CITY — While the West Orange-Stark boys continue to show how dominant they can be heading towards the District 21-3A Meet and on ahead, the Barbers Hill girls showed true dominance as both squads dominated the action at the Cardinal Relays held Saturday at Bridge City High School. The Mustangs, dominated all of the sprints and the relays, won the Boys Division with 185 points followed by the host Cardinals (134) and Barbers Hill (132). Meanwhile, the Lady Eagles stormed to the Girls Division with an astonishing 317 points. WO-S was a distant second (86) and the host Lady Cardinals (81) placed third. For the Mustang boys, Justin Thomas set a new area-best in the 100 meters, winning it in 10.39 seconds. He also racked up a win in the 200 with a 21.91 clocking. The Mustangs also received first-place finishes from Phillip Jones in the 110 hurdles (14.25), and Colin Janice in the 400 (51.77). WO-S won every relay. The 400-meter team of Janice, Thomas, Jones and Mark Roberts won with a 42.89. The quartet of Jones, Roberts, Ed Ivory and Jarrod Ross captured the 800 relay in 1:29.68 and the 1,600 meter unit of Ivory, Ross, Janice and Rashon McDonald won with a 3:31.76. Ivory was runnerup to Thomas in both the 100 (10.61) and the 200 (22.07). Bridge City’s Tyler Roberts was a double-winner on his home turf in both the jumps. Roberts claimed the long jump with a 19-foot effort and won the triple jump with a leap of 41-5. Orangefield received a first-place effort from Logan Moss, who won the discus with a toss of 134 feet. Barbers Hill ruled almost all of the events on the girls’’ side of the ledger but there were a few Orange County breakthroughs. WO-S’ Johnesha Sims was a double-winner, capturing the triple jump with a 33-9 1/4 mark and set a new Southeast Texas standard in the 100 meters with a sizzling time of 11.88. Lady Cardinal Bree Fontenot continues to shine in the 400 meters as she won on her home track with a time of 60.82. The Lady Mustangs won the 400 relay behind Hardin, Sims, Daughtery and Mitchell with a 51.07 and captured the 800 relay as well with the effort of Hardin, Davis, Tyson and Mitchell with a 1:51.33. More on the story [Hidden Content] "I'm 72 and have been thinking about retiring but I know we're going to have a good team next season.  It was hard to leave that kind of money on the table," he said. It was said Hooks was wanting to take the money but still coach the football team in the fall and then leave in December at the Christmas break.  When asked about that plan Hooks seemed diplomatic in saying, "Wellll, I just think now was the right time."  He then said, "I can tell you this, I'll be watching football somewhere on Friday night." I asked if he'll be able to watch the Mustangs play without being on the sidelines.  "I plan on being at the Nederland game (season opener) since its at Lamar.  After that we'll just have to see."
