  1. With Big Sandy changing districts and Spurger's losses to graduation this district just got a lot closer.I dont think you will be able to call a loss in this district an upset unless it comes at the hands of HI.Most of the top 4 clubs in this district will probably win at home, the district champ will steal a couple on the road.I like HD's chances and I wouldn't bet against WH once Copeland gets his legs under him.Spurger/Evadale and Sabine Pass are all real close as well. The champ here could easily go 8-2.This should be fun good luck to all the clubs.
  2. Not real sure what Brookeland has returning but they had a solid club last year. This should be a pretty solid matchup for Brookeland and Spurger simply because neither play football and should be starting to come around.Jasper will still be playing football but will have enough athletes to put a pretty competetive team on the floor.Overall it will just be a scrimmage to let the coaches look at some folks in game situations nothing more, nothing less.
  3. Congats Lady Warriors on a fine season.I have sincerely enjoyed watching these young ladies this season. While the season ended a little short of your goals it is one you can definitely build on.With a very good nucleus returning these girls should be outstanding again next year. PS. Everyone at the Warren sporting events need to take a cue from the student cheering section, they did a fantastic job this year as well.
  4. It will be shelbyville and woodville to fight it out far the last playoff spot Newton wins it followed by San Augustine then Kirbyville.
  5. I am a huge Hawk fan but Walker can play with anyone on this list.He seems like a great kid who leads by example on the floor. He hasn't developed as a guard because he doesn't play the position on his current team.He will have to work on his ball handling skills a little but the shooting touch is definitely there. If your just looking for guards in this area at the small school level check out these 3. Bernard-HJ Robinson-Silsbee Copeland-WH (The most overlooked player in this area)
  6. Kountze will be much improved over last years club and will probably run the table this year.If anyone in this district has a shot at beating them it will be Anahuac @Anahuac.E/C will probably get the 3rd playoff spot but the loss of Tramain and Vance will make it really tough for them to compete with the Lions.
  7. I agree with you ghost 100% , there are no proven teams yet.I enjoy watching Spurger play and have traveled numerous times over the years to watch them.I hope they do well this year, I just want the folks to give them a chance to mature as a team before they set the bar so high.I have no doubt this club will be very good in the years to come ,just don't throw them under the bus if they don't make it back to the regional finals this year.Good luck to all the clubs in this district,I look forward to watching some of the small school battles this year.
  8. Spurger did put together a solid run last year. When they got in trouble they counted on Phillip to control the paint on both ends of the floor. When teams collapsed JT could fill it up from behind the arc.I'm not saying Spurger won't be solid I'm just saying they are unproven to this point.
  9. Warren-3 Milburn Academy-0 First rd playoff game.
  10. Don't overlook HD.They will also be VERY well coached and will be in the 2nd year of a new system.Spurger has a ton of young talent but they will have to mature and learn to play at the varsity level on the road to be considered as the favorite. That won't happen overnight so be patient with the pirates.I'm not on the SP bandwagon, they haven't been to the playoffs for as long as I can remember and I don't see them going this year.I think HD wins it and then it's a toss up with Spurger,WH and Evadale.
  11. Roman will be the best player in the district but I wouldn't consider him a guard.Probably a post or small forward would be his high school position.
  12. I think EC will get the nod over Hardin since Davis is out.I think Deweyville Buna and Warren will split a game or two with each other.Your order looks about right but I think the bottom 3 will probably all win at least 1 ,they all graduated a lot of folks.I could also see Anahuac getting a win over Kountze if they keep there players elgible when they play in Anahuac ,that's a tough place to play.
  13. HJ handled LCM in a scrimmage this afternoon.HJ started a little slow but finished strong.LCM looks to be improved over last year. The Hawks will be fine once the cobwebs come off.
  14. Kountze is in a league of there own this year,Anahuac takes second and EC is probably a distant third. The district overall will be down considerably from last year.
  15. Final: Hardin-49 Warren-22 Hardin played well tonight and Warren continiues to turn the ball over way to much to win.I think they turned it over 5 times tonight.Hats off to Brandon Young he's playing some really good football on both sides of the line of scrimmage.Kids are playing hard just a little short handed.
  16. You gotta hate that for the young man.He showed tremendous improvement at the end of last season.Hope he heals and is able to play his senior season. That will cripple the Hornets chances for a playoff spot this year.
  17. I don't think either of these clubs have been tested yet. Both clubs 2 wins have came against Kountze and Warren. Both played Kountze pretty close while Buna handed Warren a pretty big loss.I think Buna wins this game at home pretty convincingly and sets up a showdown with Anahuac for the title. Buna-28 Deweyville-7
  18. warren has lot its entire starting five from last year i think it will down year for warren basketball. Who do they have? The only definite starters for warren will be Blake Riley, Brandon Young, Cody Andrews, and James Blackshear.. the other starting position is not determined yet.. I don't think there are any definite starters a month before practice starts. While the 4 you named have a good shot at starting the Greeson kid was probably the best team player on the club this past summer. For this group be competetive they will have to learn to play team basketball and that will start with setting screens to get Blackshear and Andrews open.
  19. Nitro,I think it's great you have confidence in your club.I don't have any ties to anyone in this district other than finding the best game and going to watch. If SP graduated 2 starters and are depending on kids moving from the JV off a club that didn't make the playoffs they are probably a long shot at best.I think HD/WH and Spurger are the playoff clubs out of this district. Not real sure of the order because I don't know how WH role players developed over the summer but I'm leaning toward HD to win it.
  20. This is exactly what my post said. The top 2 scorers were Phillip and JT while Pate was very good on the defensive end.George may develop into the best of the Whittacre boys but it will take a little time and Blankenship has a ton of potential. The thing Spurger will miss will be the senior leadership that you only get from playing. When the shots weren't falling last year from the arc they could depend on Phillip to steady the ship.I really believe they will have a good club this year,I just think the folks in the stands need to realize they are gonna be young and will have some bumps. While the new young coach will do a good job you have to respect what Stappert did.He took the Pirates to one game of the state tournament and that will be hard to duplicate.
  21. Spurger didn't just lose 1 player. They lost 3 starters and there top 2 scorers.Whittakers loss will be tough on them because he was the steady force in the middle. Both the Sheffield kids could score on the perimeter and play pretty good defense. This years club will have lots of potenetial but don't expect them to go undefeated in district play. When you start that many sophomores you will have some growing pains. The best player in the district resides in Saratoga and HD will be improved also with a year under there coach. If Sabine Pass didn't get some move ins I don't see them as a threat to make the playoffs.Spurger also lost a pretty good coach but the young guy they got will do well over there.
  22. Young will be a real aggressive defender but usually stays in foul trouble as a result.Brandon has all the tools if he just lets the game come to him he could be pretty darn good. Not sure where the points will come from with this group. They are gonna be pretty small so coming off the screens may be a problem. If they learn to set solid pics and free Cody up he can shoot the open 3.I think there 2 biggest challenges will be defense and rebounding and they will learn quick,if you don't do those 2 it's hard to win.I hope they do well this year,I'll be watching and yelling for em.
  23. Even with Brey you may have the Lions picked a little high. While Devin is a pretty good player with a lot of potential,Roman Walker is the steadying force behind the Lions. You may want to look at New Waverly and Newton as some pre season favorites in region 3 this year.New Waverly made it to the state tournament last year and Newton has improved drastically over the past 2 years and has a very solid big guy now in the middle.
  24. warren has lot its entire starting five from last year i think it will down year for warren basketball. Who do they have? Warren will probably start very slow because everyone they have except Cody plays football. They didn't get much playing time last year and didn't play a whole lot over the summer so no one knows how they will do.You will probably have Andrews,Young,Blackshear,Riley and Scritchfield or Greeson starting.Greeson has a lot of potential and the younger Blackshear boy may also get some minutes.I haven't seen a schedule so I couldn't say what kind of record would be feasible.
  25. .Spurger will be young and may take awhile to get used to not having Whittaker and Sheffield, they do have some excellent young players but may be a year away from being a legitamate threat. Spurger is doing good the have the same team as last year and like he said we did lose 2 starters! but the rest of the team is the same and is doing great, but i wish I could say the same about our JV lol their not doing so good! It's not always the number of starters you lose but the caliber of players.Phillip Whittaker was the heart and soul of the pirates last year and both the Sheffield kids started when I saw them.Between those 3 players they carried the bulk of scoring for the Pirates.I enjoy watching Spurger and look for George and his classmates to do well just don't expect to much to quick. They will be solid but will go through some growing pains this year at times.
