1. Seahawks lost a close one.  I'm sorry that I don't remember the score.  This was my first LSCPA game, and I enjoyed it.
2.
I agree and I'm thrilled they won.  I also agree that Roc has to still be learning.  And, finally, I agree that 72% is unbelievable.  If they guy was making shots with someone all over him then you just have to take your hat off to him.  However, when a team is shooting that high of a percentage it usually means they are getting a lot of easy looks.  I am pleased with the teams improvement but I still don't think you stay with a defense that is getting burned.  But, I suppose that's why I'm not a coach.  If I were a coach I would have changed my defense to stop Toolson and someone else may have gotten easy looks.
I don't remember Toolson getting many open shots, other than the fast break lay-up that he missed.  He was hitting 30-foot fadeaways with a hand in his face and other circus shots.  The kid was unbelievable.
3. I think this is going to be a tough one.  SFA is good offensively inside, and their guards are very good defensively.  They are going to send the half-court trap at Dawkins early and often.  They are going to get back in transition, and it'll be surprising to get any fast-break points off of misses.  Their pocket rocket Eric Bell isn't going to be bothered much by Lamar's press.  They aren't world-beaters.  Because they don't have any really good rebounders, and they don't crash the offensive glass at all, Lamar should win the battle of the boards handily.  If Lamar can force the pace, they win easily, but I doubt that happens. My brain says SFA by 5 in an ugly, ugly game with less than 110 total points.  My heart says that Lamar's athleticism will overwhelm them, they'll be the first team to score 65 on them, and Lamar will win by 7 or 8.  Let's hope that my heart is right. Lamar 66, SFA 58 Edit:  I'll be at the women's game, which Lamar should win handily, so I'll be blissfully ignorant about the result until near the end.
4. Game Recap Eastern Division "Preview" The photos in the game post aren't approved yet, so here they are: [Hidden Content]
5. Lamar will not consider leaving the Southland for 5 years. Personally, I think they will be in the Southland for ten years, but that depends on what else happens. If there is a mass exodus from the SLC, and another conference pops up that is a good fit, Lamar may leave in fewer than 10 years.
6. Chron.com had an open call for bloggers to cover their University's sports. I took the call for Lamar. Here is my first blog, which is a preview of the Southland's West division. 7. Ashley Crawford was starting at PG before she blew out her knee. She may get a medical redshirt. If this new signing is as raw as I hear, I doubt she starts right away. Trashanna has been really good at times in the post, and her rebounding and defense complements Brittany well. Also, 6'3" Nichole Aiken is still on the roster, even though she hasn't played. I think she's hurt as well and getting a medical redshirt. She looked really good in the scrimmages.
8. I think they'll win the East. If they just get better as the season goes on, they'll be in great shape for the tournament.
9. Unfortunately, he's a senior next year. He won't be eligible. Still, I'd be they get a lot of talented walk-ons. I remember a guy that I took some classes with who was a great Division II running back at Abilene Christian, and because of family reasons, had to come back "home" (he was from Baytown) to Lamar after his sophomore year. He said he still wanted to play and would have walked on if Lamar had a football team. Heck, there was an intramural flag football team that over half the team had played Juco ball. And isn't the Lamar Rugby Club one of the best non-sponsored teams around? I'd bet there's plenty of football talent there.
10. Congrats to Molli! I've said this before, but Tubbs really should look at giving this young lady a job. She's an incredible volleyball player, she's a cerebral player who really understands the game, and she's been a great leader. Were it up to me, she'd be walking the sidelines next season alongside Coach Gibert.
11. That might just be the greatest smiley in the history of the internet.
12. Funny quote from Brandon McThay: "I think we're the best 4-6 team in the country."
13. Sounds to me like they had a little too much of Vegas.
14. I've been through Batesville a couple of times. It's right between Bald Knob and Mountain Home. I never noticed Lyon College, though. Perhaps because the scenery is so beautiful that I was looking another way.
15. I agree with a lot of this. Even so, Roc and Billy have different defensive philosophies. They both press, but differently. Billy pressed to get steal opportunities and fast-break points. Roc presses to try to get a 10-second violation and to set a tone defensively. So far, Roc's teams have been better at half-court defense than any from Tubbs' second coaching stint.
16. This won't happen. And this certainly won't. What has anyone seen this season that makes him believe that the Raiders can beat anyone by 30 points? Edit: I forgot about the LA Tech game, but LA Tech has lost to Southeast Missouri State and University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff twice. They don't count as "anyone".
17. According to original plans, Lamar will start Softball in Spring '09 playing at Ford Park. I haven't heard anything about it in a while, and I would think that's impossible now (recruiting should have already started for '09). Even so, Lamar Softball is certainly in the plans.
18. This is certainly a winnable game. Texas Tech is not a good team this year. It's nice to catch them when they're down, and it would be really nice to beat them while they're down.
19. It could be worse. We could be SMU. (Although it really bothers me that a team called University of South Carolina - Upstate has more D1 wins than Lamar.)
20. Lamar 90 - Rice 72. If Lamar doesn't win this game, it's going to be a long season.
21. The new academic building: Is that the one that will be bordered by the Carl Parker Building on two sides? What is the proposed purpose of that building? There's also a huge tree-planting project proposed. All streets will be lined with trees, the dead areas near the Set/Umphrey Center/dining hall will have trees added, and most importantly to me, the area behind the Montagne and Cardinal Stadium will have trees added. The plant wouldn't look quite as bad if most of it was hidden by trees.
22. They're going to demo the current physical plant and increase parking significantly at the Montagne. (The new physical plant was originally proposed to go where the Village at Lamar is now, so I don't know where it's going.) There are no current plans for a new football stadium. If the engineers determined it was necessary, that might change, but Lamar is hoping to be able to use Cardinal Stadium in some form or fashion.
23. Appalachian State is in the Boonies. Satellite View It's a long way from anywhere. It'd be like Stephen F. Austin recruiting locally. There just isn't enough talent. The greater Beaumont area has tons more talent than the greater Boone area. There's a lot more opportunity to recruit locally here.
