[/quote] Lamar has never brought in many SEC teams, and few Big 12 and PAC 10 teams.  When they did get bigger names, they were Big 10, Big East, and some of the mid-major mid-western powerhouses, especially early in the year.  When the season started earlier, they could get good Northern teams to come to Beaumont to escape the snow.  With new mandated later start date, there's fewer good teams looking to avoid the snow.  Lamar is a tough spot for scheduling.  They're not quite good enough to get Texas or LSU to come to Beaumont, even on a home-and-home but they're way to good for Texas or LSU to pay to come to Austin or Baton Rouge for a guarantee game or series.  They could do better than Prairie View, but they're just not going to get to play very many Big 12 or SEC teams.  That's okay, that way we can sneak up on them in the Regionals.

So today on ESPN.com, there's this article about the Louisville-UH National Semifinal game in 1983. It has this photo of Drexler from what I believe is the Civic Center. Who is the Lamar player?

I was headed out there tonight, but got got called into a meeting "about my future" with my boss. I haven't been to a conference game yet this year, and it's a shame. The Lady Cards are putting a great product on the court. Still, it would have been nice if they had an afternoon home game for homecoming Saturday.

I was just going to post about how I knew Teddy Davis graduated, but then I realized you were talking about James Davis. I've just about pushed him from my mind.

UCA - 113 Lamar - 53 Southland refs one-up their performance at the SHSU game by calling 60 fouls, all of them against the Cards. Lamar has to start the second half with 4 players. Game called with 8 minutes left because Lamar runs out of players.

The ghost of Jimmy V helped UTSA make that tip-in.

Mediocre? This team continues to improve and is only going to get better. Sure, not one of the best SHSU teams under Marlin, but at the end of the season, they may be pretty close to reaching that group. Do you think Sam Houston is better than a .500 team right now? Because I don't. Corpus Christi will beat Sam by 25 in Corpus. If Lamar wants to get back to the point where they can compete with them and they want to start tomorrow night, they need to beat Sam by 20 or 25 in Beaumont.

I think Lamar wins, but if they really wants to get back into the mix, they use this game to really pound a mediocre Sam Houston team and get some confidence. If Lamar wants to get back to conference championship contention, they win 85 - 60. Prediction, Lamar wins 72-64.

Congrats! If those of you who are really basketball fans haven't seen Nikki Williams play yet, you need to get out there and see her. She is a treat to watch. She is as good a player on her level as Dawkins is on his. She's one of the quickest players on the break that you'll ever see in women's basketball, she's fearless, and she's a great finisher.

I don't want to cause any alarm, because it could be nothing, but I'm at the Lady Card, and Dawkins just walked by with a walking cast on his left foot. Let's hope and pray that it's okay.

The TV channel is listed as CSS. ??? Does anyone know what that is? Will it be on cable locally? Or at BW3?

I was really disappointed in Lamar's performance last night. They shot well, and that's all. They let the game get really sloppy at times. If they were playing a better team than St. Gregory's, it would have been horrible.

I'm an old school kinda guy, but I like the one that they used most recently best: I do like white helmets, though.

Lamar 83, ISU 43 Indiana State swears off playing anyone nicknamed the Cardinals.

1. Lamar played pretty badly and were lucky to escape with a win. 2. Brown and Worrell played tough and saved the team. 3. Lamar played the zone better than they have all season. 4. The high-low offense that Lamar ran during the first 10 minutes of the second half was really efficient and worked well. 5. Rice is a more athletic team than Denver and well-coached, but they're still not very good. 6. Rice should investigate whoever remodeled their court, because they must have taken half their money. It's not bad, but for the same money they could have built the Merrell Center from scratch. It's not nearly as nice as the Merrell Center. It is loud and if Rice ever puts a decent team on the floor, it'll be a fun place to watch a game. 7. For a team of Rice's quality, the tickets definitely shouldn't be $18.

I'll be in Houston anyway, so I'll stay for the game.

That's a pretty weak schedule compared to recent years, and I'm disappointed that there's no tournament on the schedule. I've really enjoyed the tournaments in recent years.

This is my second-favorite thing about football coming back. I am pumped about having a bigger band and a marching band. (My favorite is getting to watch Lamar football.)

What happened to Destiny Mason? She was great as a freshman.
