  1. Yup. I remember both games. I remember thinking after that scrimmage that Silsbee would have a good season. Nederland was without a few players in that one due to Babe Ruth baseball, including starting QB Moshier. But, Silsbee was a solid team and I left that game very worried about the Dogs and it turned out we BARELY made the playoffs. The next week we played what I thought was a pretty good Jasper team and beat them by 3 scores, but they were down last year. I did not know that at the time.
  2. I agree AggiesAreWe. He is no doubt a great player, but did not always bring the intensity on every play. Toward the end of the year last year, he really stepped up, especially in the PN-G game. I thought he had an OK game the other night, but several guys on the defense had great games including #2 Grogan and #73 Stewart. Johnson is no doubt a force to be reckoned with though as is Gutierrez #38 at LB. Dogs defense will be much improved this year. I think you can expect big things from your soph QB over there not only this season but for the next two years especially.
  3. Not that it matters that much, scalpem, but Nederland won the game scrimmage last season vs. Jasper by 3 TD's. I just wanted to correct that because I was there.
  4. I think they help a lot. I don't think there is a winner or loser in a scrimmage and controlled scrimmages are not that fun for a fan to watch, but they serve a purpose. I like the game type scrimmages best. Those seem to get all the players going full speed. I think the coaches use the controlled scrimmage portions to try players at different positions and establish depth, etc.
  5. I hope they change their minds and just play a full game like last year. Much more fun for the fans to watch and I think the players are more into that.
  6. Friday night, gas. I am anxious to see Jasper. I heard they looked good against PN-G.
  7. No doubt the addition of Pouncy to their backfield made a world of difference.
  8. Interested on everyone's thoughts about this scrimmage matchup.. It will be a full game scrimmage from what I hear. I think it should be a good battle. I hear that Jasper has a much improved team and is built for speed. Nederland is breaking in a new offense and has a much improved defense. I will be making the trek to Jasper to watch the battle of the Dogs. Predictions?
  9. Nederland fought quite well vs. LaMarque last season. It was a tale of two halves. Nederland looked great in the first half. LaMarque made adjustments and shut us down in the 2nd half. No doubt the better team won. It was a hard fought game and probably as tough of a regular season game as the Coogs had during the regular season. I am glad that we did not have to face them later in the season because they were much better at the end of the season.
  10. I was at the Silsbee/Nederland game as well and I agree with most of what I have seen posted thus far. Silsbee and Nederland tied 1-1 when 1st stringers went toe to toe for the first 15 plays. Silsbee scored on a nice 35-40 yard run. Nederland scored on a nice drive capped off by about a 10-15 yard run by Sampere. Silsbee won 1-0 when the 2nd teamers clashed. A long TD run by Silsbee with numerous missed tackles by the Dogs 2nd stringers was the only score. Silsbee's 2nd string looked quite a bit better than Nederlands. When the first stringers faced off again, it was a 0-0 tie with Nederland's defense looking REALLY good. Silsbee had a bend but don't break defense in that stanza and kept the Dogs out of the end zone.. Nederland won 1-0 in the game-like portion they played at the end. A nice scramble by Sampere led to a nice pass to Broussard for the only score. Players who impressed me on both sides of the ball.. Silsbee's QB is gonna be really good. He is young, quick, elusive, and has a great arm. Silsbee has a bevy of speedy backs and some good looking specimens at WR. Silsbee has a nice sized O-Line but were having trouble with the Nederland front guys. Silsbee's D looked OK but gave up a few long screens. Nederland QB looked pretty good, but threw a couple of picks. I thought he did a great job though for a first scrimmage and he was taking some terrible snaps from the center a few times out of the gun. I thought Bass did a good job running and catching the ball. I would have liked to have seen a little of 2nd stringer #28 run with the first teamers. Also, would have liked to have seen #38 run a little in this offense. I liked having DJ #44 lined up in the slot. That is a matchup nightmare for DB's when we run plays where he will block downfield. He also caught a pass and showed good hands and some moves. I thought all of Ned's WR's were a huge upgrade from last season. #9, #21, #1, and #24 particularly impressed me. They all caught the ball well and had some quick moves when they did. The defense for Nederland looked really good to me for so early in the season. Particularly, #2 and #73 who were in the backfield ALL NIGHT LONG. DJ #44 did not have a bad game, but did not look like his motor was completely running like it will be during the season. #38 made some really nice plays and the 2ndary led by #24 and #22 defended the pass really well. Most impressive things in the scrimmages. Nederland's penetration on defense with #73 and #2. Silsbee's QB was really good in my opinion. I think the future is really bright for him. #21 Asa Cardenas for Nederland should have a big year. He impressed me a lot on big 3rd down catches. All and all I think it was a good scrimmage for both teams and I agree with the poster who said if they would have played 4 quarters that Nederland would have probably won a hard fought game.
  11. I would bet my paycheck that LC-M does not come in last. They will be in a great battle for 3rd in my opinion. Flip flop Vidor and LC-M and then these rankings might be closer to the probable finish.
  12. I am sure he is talking about the double header at Reliant. LaMarque and Brenham are both state powerhouse programs.
  13. Nederland in a tight one. PN-G will be much improved, but Neumann owns Burnett.
  14. Her brother, Nick, was a first round draft pick and I think he starts for the Jets.
  15. Good job, BUG. You and Grant look like you did very well. What age group are you playing now and how old are you? How about Grant? Are y'all in the same division?
  16. You are probably right. I lost track of him. He was a few years older than me if I remember correctly. 4-A and 5-A state were very tough the year I made it. I got beat 6-3 6-1 in the opening round by a guy named Rob Hogan from Wichita Falls who I swore would win it all. lol He lost in straight sets the next round and the guy that beat him lost in the finals. Colligan was also there and lost first round to a phenomenal freshman, I forgot his name. But, he was a very good one. I think he won state that year and the following year in doubles.
  17. I am not familiar with Zach Carrell. Where is he based out of? Around what age is he?
  18. Catchings was a very good player, but he was from Liberty, not Hardin. I played against both Kral bros. and do not remember them winning state even though they were 3A(we were 4A and played them in tourneys but did not follow 3A that much). Turow was outstanding as well as Brady. I cannot believe that I left them off my list. They totally slipped my mind.

  20. Good post, Matt. I think Jerry does a fine job out at Idylwild and he is a friend of mine as well. I think you bring up a good point about him not being talked about all that much because of the location of the club where he is at. Being from Mid County, Idylwild is quite a drive. But, Beaumont is probably only about 20 mins from there and Jerry does do a good job. I have noticed a lot of the other coaches do not like him as well. I do not know why that is the case. He has always been very friendly to me.
  21. Brad Caston was also a very good player when he was young. But, he concentrated more on basketball as he got older. Still a very good player for as little time as he practiced in high school.
  22. excellent players that i did leave out. definitely guys that were very, very good players.. my mind slipped on me a bit. thanks for adding those great players.
  23. Well, I can't completely agree with your assessment. Of course Tony has the most champs and supers because he runs an academy and it is his full time job out at Brentwood. And, to his credit I have heard that he is doing a fine job out at Brentwood. I play often with Jorge and he has some good things to say about Tony and lets Grant go out there sometimes. The other coaches mentioned-- David is head women's coach at LU which consumes most of his time. Jorge is head tennis coach at Nederland and that consumes much of his time. This is the reason that many juniors do not take from them. Jorge is also the best player in this area. Ron is kinda in semi-retired mode when it comes to tennis. But, he has coached some excellent players including Tara Shelander and Andrew Danos. I know that is not where they started, but it is where they ended. So, while Tony has the numbers of players, let's look at this.. Jorge and David have both been quite instrumental in the success of both Deaver bros. even though they may not coach them now. I know that David still has some sort of connection with Matthew because he called me the other day to see if I could start hitting with him. Danos started early on with Tony and was a good player and was with Ron in his dominant high school days. Buagas does not get much publicity, but he is a very good teacher and a heckuva player himself. I agree with you wholeheartedly though on your assessment about SETX tennis vs. the rest of the state. I hate to be blunt, but we are bottom of the barrel. A lot of that has to do with facilities and country clubs. We have a few places to play, other cities have TONS. We have not been able to and cannot compete with the facilities that other cities have. It has been that way for the last 15 years. It was that way when I was in school and it is still that way in adult levels.
