1. Most have already deemed the Gilmer vs Jasper rematch in the Bi-District round of the the 3A Division 1 Playoffs, but there is one setback to this... Tyler Chapel Hill beat Bullard 62-0 tonight in their District 17-3A contest. Other scores in 17-3A tonight are Gilmer 62 - Gladewater 12 and Tatum 56 - Longview Spring Hill 23. This gives Gladewater a 2-2 record, Tyler Chapel Hill a 1-3 record, and Longview Spring Hill a 1-3 record. Because of tiebreaker rules if Tyler Chapel Hill wins at home against Gladewater by at least 6 points, Tyler Chapel Hill would go to the playoffs as the 3rd place team, with a record of 2-3, as the Division 1 representative (because of enrollment), sending Gilmer to Division 2, and face Jasper in the first round of the playoffs... I think this should make Jasper one of the favorites in Division 1... Any thoughts?!?
2. I agree! Mijares has been solid for the Dogs and gives the team the 3rd dimension of a championship team... Offense, Defense, Special Teams...
3. X-Factor: Game will be played in Jasper Carthage 21 Jasper 27 This game will decide the 18-3A District Championship! Go Dogs!!!
4. Michael Webb #6 DB Jasper Bulldogs 7 Tackles, 2 INT's, 45yd INT return for TD
5. This would setup a Jasper vs Gilmer rematch in the Bi-District round if Chapel Hill doesnt make the playoffs.
6. I agree that this has been a successful year so far... the Dogs have won 2 of 3 games, all games against top 5 State ranked opponents, including the #1, #2, & #3 ranked teams in 3A and the #4 ranked team in 2A on their schedule. Most coaches and AD's should run from this kind of schedule. The Jasper Bulldogs are one half away from being the #1 ranked team in 3A if not for the letdown against Gilmer. And they are a COMPLETE team offensively, defensively, and in special teams. But the key to this team going deep into the playoffs is taking one game at a time. The worst thing this group can do is become overconfident and overlook teams in their district like Diboll, Rusk, and Center. They will get their true test against their district foe and defending State Champion Carthage on October 23 in Jasper. If they can stay focused, healthy, and eligible (academics are most important), we will know for sure if these Dogs will go DEEP into the playoffs. Lets take care of Hamshire-Fannett first... GO DOGS!!!
7. I dont know alot about Hamshire-Fannett... How will they fare against the Bulldogs???
8. Absolutely!!!! They should both be State ranked by then... Cant wait!!!
9. WO-S will most definitely make it out of their district...
10. Jasper 23 - #3 WO-S 13 First I'd like to start differently by tipping my hat to the West Orange-Stark Mustangs for a great game. Those guys are very talented and will be extremely tough come playoff time. The Jasper Bulldogs, to those who have watched both games versus Gilmer and Kirbyville, did not do anything surprising tonight. This win was expected because of solid defensive play and a great offensive scheme. Jasper showed a lot of heart tonight in their home opener and they began the game with a lot of emotion, but unlike the Gilmer game, there was no letdown in the second half. This is a talented group of young men with a Guru for a coach whose passion for the game is reflected by his players. This was a great win and should get the State's attention. And to the doubters... THE DOGS ARE FOR REAL THIS YEAR!!! Celebrate tonight. Lets gets focused on Hamshire-Fannett next week. One game at a time.... ALL THE WAY DOGS!!!
11. Well blackflag... as much as I would love to say the Dogs, I was actually thinking WO-S. There linebacking group is by far the best in the area... if not the state... 4A - Central 3A - WOS But after Jasper beats WO-S in Week 3, they will take the top defensive spot...
12. Well blackflag... as much as I would love to say the Dogs, I was actually thinking WO-S. There linebacking group is by far the best in the area... if not the state...
13. Jasper Bulldogs Offense - C+ - They have to eliminate the fumbles and minimize the costly penalties. The offense is improving and showing some versatility. Great Job Coach Bickham! Defense - B- - The new defensive scheme has confused everyone so far this year (including Gilmer). Defense kept us in the game versus Gilmer in the first half, but ran of of gas the second. Defense played a big part of the Kirbyville win including McGill's 3 INT's. Still lots of room for improvement. Special Teams - C - One of the bright spots of the special teams is the kicker #98 Juan Mijarez. Jasper hasn't had a true kicker since the '01 season and it has given the team that other dimension that it most desperately needed. He play a big part of the field position game and he solidified the win against Kirbyville with a 32yd field goal. Special teams personnel doesn't seem to be on the same page at times. Tighten up Dogs! Overall - C+ - The Jasper Bulldogs will get better each week as stated by first year coach Mike Bickham. He has the Dogs on a path success and will truly be a team to watch as the season progress. Go Dogs!!!
14. Who has the best DEFENSE in Southeast Texas so far this year?
15. What the Rankings should be..... 1. West Brook 2. West Orange-Stark 3. PN-G 4. Lumberton 5. Newton 6. Vidor 7. Central 8. Jasper 9. Bridge City 10. Kirbyville If you do not lose a game, then you shouldn't be penalized (except for Bridge City... haven't played anyone worth a higher ranking). And to all the Vidor fans on this thread, the Pirates may have over 400 yards rushing in both games of the season so far, but if its done versus mediocre private schools, then you dont get much respect for that. And dont worry, Jasper will climb toward the top of this list after they beat WO-S! You can't throw the ball against Jasper, McGill and Webb will pick it off!!! Go Dogs!!!
16. Many did not pick Jasper to win this game, but if you watched the Bulldogs against Gilmer last week then this was not a surprise to you. Jasper has improved alot since last year. They have a solid defense and a confusing scheme, in which, other than the first play of the game, Kirbyville struggled with and congratualations to #11 Cedric McGill for a superb defensive effort (3 INTs). The offense showed versatility by spreading out the field when needed and controlling the tempo of the game with their triple option scheme. Enter QB #5 Sam Alvis, 4 rushing TD's tonight. Great job Sam! And with the hiring of a new track coach last spring, you can see the speed development as well. Combine that with their size and strength, its makes for them to be a dangerous team. They must eliminate turnovers and the costly penalties before they can be considered an elite team. Good luck against WO-S in the Dog House on Sept. 19. Go Dogs!!!
17. If Jasper plays 4 quarters of football as they did the first half of the Gilmer game, the Bulldogs will be hard to beat and will dominate the Kirbyville Wildcats. Strong defensive play along with and a solid running game translates to WINS!!! Jasper 21 Kirbyville 20 Go Dogs!
18. I feel that Jasper will use the ball control gameplan against Gilmer. Their new Triple Option offense that Bickman has installed will help the Dogs control the clock and keep Gilmer's high-powered offense on the sidelines. If the Dogs can play solid defense and keep possession of the ball, I give them a slight edge over the highly favored Buckeyes. Jasper 21 Gilmer 17 GO DOGS!!!
19. When you think of the best athletes from the Lakes, the first thing that comes to mind is JASPER. But the question is best athlete, which implies all sports. We cant forget all of the stellar athletes and the multiple sports stars such as Ben Bronson who was All State Football and Baseball in 1991, went on to become an All-American at Baylor and played professionally for the Lions, Colts, and KC Royals in baseball; Bryan Bronson who was Gatorade High School National Athlete of the Year in 1991 (Member of the Jasper 4x100 Relay team which set the National Record in 1991 at 39.9sec) and an Olympian in 1996 in Atlanta; or Tony Allen and Reggie Davis of the late 80s who were top recruits in the nation in 1985 and produced multiple State Championships in Track for Jasper which I feel doesn't get recognized enough. Not to mention Joseph "Red" Bryant, DT who was a top recruit in 2002, 3A State Champion in the Shot Put in 2003, went on for a successful career at Texas A&M, and a 2008 4th round draft pick of the Seattle Seahawks.
