  3. Matsuzaka goes on DL [Hidden Content] OAKLAND, Calif. -- Boston Red Sox right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka went on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a mild right shoulder strain after his second straight poor start to open the season. Matsuzaka Matsuzaka didn't make it to the second inning Tuesday night against the Oakland Athletics, giving up five runs and five hits on 43 pitches. After going 18-3 last year, Dice-K is 0-1 with a 12.79 ERA this season, yet another worry for manager Terry Francona during his club's unimpressive start. "Our biggest concern is to keep him healthy and productive," Francona said. "At the moment, it doesn't seem like we're there with him. ... It wasn't coming out very crisp. It looks like he needs to be built back up. We want him to be able to be Dice-K." The Japanese star won three games while earning the MVP award at the World Baseball Classic this spring, but his outstanding performance for the WBC champions might have cost the Red Sox. Francona thinks the extra work has caused trouble early in the regular season. After Tuesday's game lasted more than four hours and ended with Oakland's 6-5 victory, the Red Sox said Matsuzaka had "arm fatigue." Speaking through an interpreter, Matsuzaka claimed he felt fine. "Not in particular," Matsuzaka said through a translator, when asked if he had any physical problems. "I haven't had the chance to speak to Francona yet, but for me personally, I think I'm OK." Matsuzaka will be examined by Boston's team doctor on Friday when the club returns to Fenway Park. The Red Sox recalled Hunter Jones, a 25-year-old left-handed reliever with no major league experience, to replace him on the roster. (more at the link)
  4. [Hidden Content] BOSTON – The Boston Red Sox are in discussions with the NHL to hold the next Winter Classic at Fenway Park. A baseball official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because no deal had been reached, confirmed that Fenway is a site being considered for the next New Year's Day game. In previous years, the outdoor game has been played at Ralph Wilson Stadium, the home of the Buffalo Bills, and the Chicago Cubs' Wrigley Field. Red Sox spokeswoman Pam Ganley referred questions to the NHL. "We've had conversations about the Winter Classic, but no final decisions have been made," league spokeswoman Bernadette Mansur said. Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek said the game would be good publicity for hockey, but was more worried about his own sport. "Hopefully it doesn't tear up the field too much," he said.
  5. Former All-Star Mark 'The Bird' Fidrych dies at 54 [Hidden Content] BOSTON – Whether he was dominating hitters or hauling asphalt, Mark Fidrych had fun. The colorful pitcher talked to baseballs, smoothed the mound with his hands and high-fived teammates in the middle of the diamond. He had one terrific season in 1976, and after injuries curtailed his career — just five years in the majors with the Detroit Tigers — he lived on his farm in Northborough, Mass., where he enjoyed driving his truck and using it for building projects. On Monday, Fidrych was found dead beneath a 10-wheel dump truck by Joseph Amorello, a friend and owner of a road construction company who sometimes hired Fidrych. He was 54. (more at the link)
  6. He should of at least hit him to get six games. [Hidden Content] NEW YORK – Boston pitcher Josh Beckett has been suspended for six games and fined by Major League Baseball, which determined he intentionally threw a pitch near the head of the Los Angeles Angels' Bobby Abreu last week. Beckett also was cited for "aggressive actions" after the pitch that led to the benches clearing Sunday, according to Bob Watson, vice president for discipline in the commissioner's office. If Beckett appeals, any penalties would be delayed until after a hearing. Angels hitting coach Mickey Hatcher was suspended for one game and fined, and he was to serve the penalty Tuesday night. In addition, Watson fined Angels manager Mike Scioscia and players Torii Hunter and Justin Speier.
