Wow!  Team on the rise huh???

Sadly, in comparison to past years, this is an improvement.

Tarkington actually won a game this year.  In past years they have had 0 wins

That is not an improvement in program, that is an improvement in schedule. Did they play better in the first 4 games? Sure, but they didn't maintain that at all and more importantly didn't improve on what worked. That's a system failure not a player personnel issue. Of course you're entitled to think otherwise as I am entitled to think not so we'd just go back and forth all day, I just don't understand why this level of poor performance is defended by "well its bad, but better than the pathetic state it was allowed to slide to" and "give it yet ANOTHER year". It's that mentality that has put them here. That complacency will keep them there.

There were multiple win seasons in 08 and 09 (ok, 2 wins each) with at least one district win in each. So "improved over" 10-11 is not saying much even IF it's true.

Those from Tarkington have noticed the improvement.  Lower levels are performing good.  It will translate to future success, comparatively speaking.

Yeah, I believe the current crop of sophomores(i believe alot are on varsity) are all kids who were in 7th grade when Carpenter got there, and are the first group of kids that have been truly developed at the Jr. High level by him and his staff. For sophomores on varsity they seem to be doing well. So yes, I would say definitely an improvement.

So in two years when the sophomore are seniors they will compete for a playoff spot?
[/quote]

That would be nice but for now just competing for a DISTRICT WIN would be nice. Lower levels have been doing "good" for a number of years, it's always "next year".

To say Tarkington has made no improvement is silly. they may not be as competitive as people once thought they were, but it's not a easy path to correcting many years of losing. I see improvements, not just the varsity level, but especially on the JV, freshman and Middle school level. I think they've got a shot to be real competitive in a few years if they keep at it. those boys work hard and play harder that's something that's never in doubt watching them play on Friday nights. Sometimes you can't just go by W's and L's. They'll improve to start getting more W's and less L's in the future.

I will agree the kids do play hard and give effort.  Correct me if I'm wrong...most small schools have their better freshmen and sophomore on varsity so its hard to judge the JV teams.  It just seems the progress is talked about  but doesn't show on the field.  It sure didn't take Shepherd long to turn it around.

Ha comparing Tarkington to any school in the state let alone district doesn't really apply. Shepherd has had good seasons before, heck they were mighty competitive a few years back. Tarkington to the best of my knowledge is fighting the uphill climb of historically never even making the playoffs (at least to the best of my knowledge, if someone knows of them making the playoffs please do tell).

This group of kids were on their way to improvement, when the old, losing mindset crept in after big losses to strong teams, Coldspring and Cleveland. They will have to find a way out of that attitude to find a measure of success, but I always like to believe it can happen, especially to a long-time underdog.

    • Will probably be released by the Democrats come September.  Sound familiar?
    • Sure.  You reassign an employee and they leave voluntarily instead of being fired and being open to litigation.  The outcome is the same, but you are making my point.  The superintendent and AD and principal are all empowered to make personnel decisions.  Instead of accepting the decision made, you talk about lawyering up, no one else was reprimanded, railroad job.  I am old enough to remember when high school sports taught life lessons...accountability being chief among them.
    • I know absolutely nothing about the situation, but I do know head coaches of sports other than the AD have actual teaching assignments, and I know from my wife having worked in the sped department of multiple schools that it’s not uncommon at all for coaches to shirk those duties.  It could very well be that this was the case at BC.  Or not, I don’t know.  Just bringing this up to point out the fact that, although many coaches only want to worry about coaching, they generally have several other responsibilities at the school.  some of them neglect or ignore these duties entirely.  If he’s been written up for other issues before, it’s a dumb argument to say “he was punished for this and others were not”.  If he had a pile of write ups in his file and they did not then it makes sense that the punishments were different.
    • He wasn’t fired, he was reassigned and people get reassigned all the time. If he was actually fired, then you would have a point, but he wasn’t fired. Based on the information presented here no way this would stand if they fired him and he lawyered up.
    • I heard the assistant was going to get this job and assume it was referring to the old Vidor coach, Nate Smith.  I always thought he did more with less at Vidor and can't help but think he shares some responsibility in Vidor's recent success.
