To say Salt Grass is the only quality restaurant we have here is a slap in the face.  In down town Beaumont right next to Hamburger Depot is a great little Italian restaurant called New York Pizza and Pasta and so far everything I have had is amazing.  Even Hamburger Depot has some amazing burgers if you are looking for that.

There is also a new cajun place called Thibideaux's  New Orleans Kitchen in Beaumont on Old Calder Road.

There is a nice restaurant down in Nederland on Boston Avenue called Finch Hutton if you want fine dining. Everything on their menu is do die for.

There is also Larry's French Market down in the Groves which has great food but you need to have time because it is always busy.

I am sure there are a lot more that I am missing but to say that Salt Grass is the only thing that the Golden Triangle has to offer is a little harsh.  Also who goes to HOOTERS for the food?  ;D

Great post Cheermom, and I do agree. There are some great food options, as you mentioned. If you are looking for Cajun cooking, add Floyds or Pappadeauxs to the list as well as the Schooner restaurant. The author may not have know to look at any of these places and that is not his fault. Maybe we need to do a better job tooting our own horns. I think Lamar University and the city of Beaumont could certainly do better as well. Otherwise, a fair and well written article.

This area is lacking in many areas, food and restaurants is not one of them. Not in quality and not is quantity.
Did you stop by starving Marvin's?  Good food and live entertainment. Maybe a little more upscale like Suga's. Good food and live entertainment. I can't find a real link outside this area. I'm talking a real link, not a sausage dressed up as a link. Can't find them in Houston or Lake Charles.

There is a selection of comedy clubs and entertainment venues, like Crockett street, not requiring anyone to go to Houston or wanna be casinos, I know, I lived in Vegas for years.

I find the article written in a way suggesting LAZYNESS. You did this area injustice and I doubt you care.

I first was drawn to the site because of the photos, so much so I though he may have use one of mine as his cover photo for his gallery.  In looking for a place to make a comment I found the review.  I was disappointed.  I agree with most that have posted here and thought I would offer some advise to improve, but the more I thought about it, I thought NOT!

I just read your review and am very disappointed. You obviously did not research much before you wrote your review. I question your motives to write such a report. If you expect your site to be used by quality people, your reports need to be truth-worthy and complete.
I could go on, but it is not worth my time.
I could not recommend your site to anyone

I posted the reply below to the BigRedInsiders board and thought I'd share it here, since many of you have the same feedback.

Hello everyone,

Thanks so much for the feedback.  I've heard from many of you that the restaurant review wasn't fair, and also the attractions section.  I will admit that I haven't tried every restaurant in Beaumont so it's possible my review isn't complete.  In that regards, I'll look into taking some of the suggestions here and editing that portion of the review.

I did feel that the rest of the review was pretty accurate and actually very high compared to other stadiums on the site.  Hopefully that point isn't lost here.  Though I do try my best to include things to do in the area, I also try to offer the best options.  Do to the proximity of Beaumont to Lake Charles and Houston, it's my opinion that there are other options that may offer a better time for visiting fans, especially if you are flying in to Houston or driving through Lake Charles.  With that said, I will go back and offer some additional local options, specifically those offered up in many of the responses to my initial post.

Thanks again for the feedback.  Also, I encourage all of you to do a fan review on the site so visiting fans have other opinions to review as well.

maybe he came thru in the 60's?
No, I-10 is mostly chain restaurants. Visitors needs to experience our unique SETX taste. This is the cross road where cajun and southwest meets.

I feel pretty much the same as you.  The stadium review was fair.  The review of the area was written by a SHSU fan and given to Donaldson who just reprinted their slander!!

Here's my draft edited Neighborhood section.  Let me know your thoughts before I submit it as an update to the review:

Neighborhood      2

As previously mentioned, Beaumont is located in the Golden Triangle region (known for high school football and petroleum industry) in southeast Texas about 85 miles east of Houston. Beaumont's population is just short of 120,000 (2011 census). In my opinion, this region is anything but a tourism area, but depending on your interests, you can find some entertaining options in and around Beaumont. My first recommendation will be that you schedule your visit so that you can take advantage of time spent in Houston (if you are coming in from the west) or at a casino in Lake Charles (if you are coming in from the east).  If you are staying the weekend in Beaumont, the locals highly recommend staying at Elegante’ Hotel and partaking in the following attractions/activities: salt water fishing in Lake Sabine, touring through the historical McFaddin-Ward House, hiking in the Big Thicket National Preserve, river fun via Neches River Adventures, a stop at Gladys City Boomtown (museum on the Spindletop Gusher) and a stroll through downtown’s Crockett Street (bar/restaurant options).

The interesting aspect of Beaumont is that due to its location near the border of Louisiana and Texas, there is unique blend of Cajun food and Texas BBQ/Tex-Mex. Unfortunately, in my opinion, having lived in both Cajun country and Texas, the quality falls a bit short at many of the area restaurants, but that doesn’t take away from the availability of options in the area.  If you’re looking for quality eats in Beaumont, you really need to plan ahead otherwise you’ll be stuck with chain stores off I-10. If you’re not from Texas, my best restaurant recommendation is a pretty large Texas steakhouse chain, Saltgrass Steak House. If you’ve been there before, give a few of these local recommended options a try: Sugas Deep South Cuisine and Jazz Bar, The Schooner (Nederland, TX), Larry’s French Market and Willy Burger.

The article is slightly improved, however Houston is in every other line.
Go to Houston or Lake Charles for good food, go to Houston or Lake Charles for a hotel, go to Houston or Lake Charles for entertainment.

Try living in the 21st century and use the internet.

Had the pleasure of experiencing Katharine & Company in the Mildred Building Complex at the corner of MLK and Calder for a wedding rehearsal dinner this weekend.  If the dinner was any indication, the restaurant should definitely be on the list if someone is in town a day early.  Bad news is the hours.  It's open for lunch Monday through Friday and for dinner on the first Thursday and for Symphony nights.  Good news is that the food was great and the Mildred Building Complex is architecturally pleasing.  The Mildred has been one of my favorites in the Triangle from the outside.
