Tough or Weak Non-District Schedule?

Recommended Posts

Since this seems to be a topic that often comes up in the forum, I decided to ask the members a question in regards to scheduling in high school athletics.  Does scheduling a tough or weak non-district schedule have an impact on the team's overall success?  'Quite Frankly', fans want to see tough competition, but is it necessary to win a state championship?  Coaches schedule weaker teams because they want wins on their record to pad their resume and so that they won't get ran out of town, but will the W's get their teams ready for a state championship?

First of all in an area such as SE Texas, in the pre district, it is tough to schedule teams further than Baytown or Houston, for budget reasons. There are only so many "quality" basketball programs in this area, so scheduling games here is just so that your kids can PLAY before district starts.  It really does not matter how tough or weak your schedule is, your team will perform against whoever they line up against if they are prepared.  Some say that teams need to be tested, and in SOME aspects that may be true, but, if you as a coach are emphasizing improvement, you will be able to measure your teams success against whoever they play.  So, to answer your question, does scheduling matter in the big scheme of things? Not really...

I think it all depends on the make up of the team from year to year.

Example: A coach that has a very young and inexperienced team needing some confidence may want to schedule opponents that he or she may feel could give them those needed wins for confidence building. A coach with a older more experienced team may want to schedule teams that would really test the teams weaknesses and may take some losses that would bring that team "back down to earth".

Also, it depends on what that coach feels is more important to the team, playing as many games as possible (pool play tourneys), or play tougher opponents but lesser games.

IMO, a good mixture is needed. Some tough games, some "easy" games, and some even games. A too "easy" or too "tough" schedule could really backfire on a team.
