Baseball Drops 3-2 Contest to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

Cougars strand 11 runners in midweek game

HOUSTON—The University of Houston baseball team outhit Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, but stranded 11 runners in a 3-2 fall to the Islanders on Tuesday at Cougar Field.

The Cougars fell to 3-1 on the year, while TAMUCC improved to 4-1.

“You never know which run will beat you and that came into play tonight,” said head coach Todd Whitting.

Houston tallied 10 hits to the Islanders’ six, but it wasn’t enough as the Cougars’ three defensive miscues proved to be the difference in the nightcap.

Senior Jake Runte led UH at the plate with a 3-for-5 effort and one run scored, while freshman Price Jacobs continued his offensive prowess with a single that drove in both Houston runs.

Senior John Cannon (2x4), junior Jacob Lueneburg (2x5), and freshman Kendall Stacks (2x4) each recorded two hits.

“Price has a great approach at the plate and he is a very aggressive hitter. Lueneburg might not show the numbers, but he has been outstanding for us this year,” said Whitting on Jacobs and Lueneburg’s night at the plate.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi got on board early with runs in the third, fourth and fifth frames to go up 3-0 after five innings. Two of the three runs scored came off of Houston errors.

Houston was shutout by Islander starter Daniel Minor (6.0,5,0,0,1,4), who earned the win after tossing 6.0 complete innings of shutout ball.

“I felt like we didn’t adjust tonight to their starter and we had a hard time figuring him out,” said Whitting.

Houston began to inch its way back as they put together several strong late inning efforts. A two-run eighth inning pulled UH within one as Runte singled to open the frame. Junior Casey Grayson was hit-by the pitch and moved up a base on a single by Lueneburg. Jacobs then singled sharply through the left side to plate Runte and Grayson.

The Cougars had their chance to make it an interesting game in the sixth, but they stranded runners at second and third.

Junior transfer Matt Hernandez (4.2,5,3,1,1,2) made his second appearance as a Cougar and first start, but suffered the loss to fall to 0-1 on the year. The righty tossed 4.2 innings, allowed one earned run on five hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

Reliever Austin Pruitt (4.1,1,0,0,1,2) made his UH debut out of the pen and was solid, working 4.1 innings, allowing just one hit, one walk, while striking out two.

UP NEXT Houston will continue its homestand this weekend when it hosts Texas State of the Southland Conference in a three-game series at Cougar Field.

Wow sure is. I do not remember him going to UT for a year. I heard that Bill had moved to Boise to escape the heat from Boston, looks like the kid went to HS there.

I wonder if Bill was incognito, Im sure he likes to fly under the radar when in attendance right?

Not sure. I saw a special on HBO recently and he seems to be making himself more "available". I guess since the "curse" was broken, those over zealous Sox fans are more forgiving.
