This is going to be a good meet with most of the area big schools and some houston schools scheduled to be in P.A. on this day.

Look for the Titans to take down WO-S in all relays also. ;) ;D

Well I am not sure what the suprise was supposed to be, but it must not have showed up.  The only sprint that PA won was the 110 hurdles and that was as close as it has been all year.
WOS finished:
1, 2 and 4 in the hundred with Trey Franks 10.55 (FAT), Justin Thomas 2nd and Colon Janice 4th
1, 2, 3 in the 200 with Trey, Justin Thomas and Mark Roberts
1st in the 4x2 (Mark Roberts, Justin Thomas, Phillip Jones, and Trey Franks
Did not run the 4x1 team
2nd in the 110 hurdles and 400
1, 2 in the 800
2nd in the 4x4
Pretty good day for WOS alot of young talent shinning today

Titans bouncing back in track
Tom Halliburton
The Port Arthur News

—   Fans all stood up. A hush surrounded the track. One well-timed emergence from the starting blocks likely would separate Trey Franks and Nate Holmes.

That's exactly what unfolded Saturday at Big Shootout time in the seventh annual Memorial Titan Relays.

It seemed like an eternity before the gun finally sounded around 3:45 at the finals of the boys 100-meter dash. And it's shame Franks and Holmes probably won't run the 100 together side-by-side again.

The stronger West Orange-Stark senior, Franks, was familiar with these types of tense shootouts. He was motivated to run against Holmes, the Golden Triangle-area leader in the event.

Franks got out of the blocks better and ran a solid, workmanlike 10.55. WO-S teammate Artevin McDonald even came in second at 10.75. The lanky, slender Port Arthur Memorial sophomore lacked any champion's finish whatsoever and settled for a learning-experience third at 10.90.

Eight new area best performances resulted and two more area-bests were duplicated at this cloudy, windy afternoon at the PAISD auxiliary track. The day suggested Port Arthur track looked on the way back. It also indicated that coach Toby Foreman's WO-S hosses had an excellent chance in May of retaining their 3A state track team title.

When Foreman's WO-S sprinters combine with Darrell Granger's improving Port Arthurans next weekend in Austin, the 83rd annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays will contain a stronger overall Golden Triangle representation at UT's spring gala than Port Arthur and Orange have offered in more than a decade.

"I was hyped up," Oklahoma football signee Franks said. "I knew the guy from Memorial was going to run good. I feel better than I have all year."

Undoubtedly part of that might be because Southeast Texas temperatures finally climbed to 70 and 71 degrees for a change.

After the 167-pound Holmes finished noticeably behind Franks, the Titans sophomore reflected his disappointment with a 10.9.

"That's my first time (and probably his last) to run against Franks," Holmes said. "I didn't finish the race how I was supposed to do. Franks is the real deal. I'm proud to run against a state champion. But I've got to come back and work a little bit harder."

Memorial junior K'Sean Wesley tied the area-best high jump at 6-6 and barely clipped the bar with his calf muscle on his first attempt at 6-8. A'Lexus' younger sister Dominique Brannon also duplicated the area lead of Silsbee's Ashley Johnson in the girls high jump by clearing 5-4. Wesley felt as if he were only about 80 percent. K'Sean is rebounding from a medial collateral ligament strain after basketball.

Five new area bests were recorded on the girls side. West Brook's Ashley Wright ran a 57.75 in the 400 and a 2:26.52 in the 800. Team runner-up Ozen (141 points) delivered new marks in the 400- and 1,600-meter relays while girls team champ Memorial (169) looked very impressive in the 800-meter exchange. The quartet of Kierra Roy, Reagan Jones, De'Ontra Kinlaw and Courtney McKinney clocked a 1:41.75, chopping nearly a full-second off the previous area low -- 1:42.66 -- also owned by the Lady Titans.

The three new boys area bests were Orangefield's Kyle Fontenot (13-1) in the pole vault, the WO-S 800-meter relay time of 1:27.34 and the bright-eyed Titans junior Jeylin Reed, who cleared 22-3 1/2.

Memorial compiled 187 points to WO-S 144.5. But two of Granger's most encouraging moments came when new area leads were not established.

Senior Michael Johnson ran the open quarter in 50.55 but a large portion of that journey went into the teeth of a rough cross wind on the far turn.

"I have to be able to extend more in the last 50 yards," Johnson said. "I think without that wind, I would have run a 48 or a 47 today."

Reed ran the second leg of Memorial's 3:23.41 winning mile relay. The very talented junior put his lap away in a whopping 48.75 but that time even should have been lower. First, Jeylin had plenty of strength left in him at the end of his lap. Second, the Titans were not being pushed by that point in the race.

"I love track period," said Reed, who may be Memorial's best track talent since a hurdler dude named Jamaal.

"Jeylin can do it all," his coach Granger said. "There's no ifs, ands or buts about it, he's the real deal."

Port Arthur and Orange look as if they too may be the real deal in track and field once again.

Maybe the surprise was that PAM lapped the field at this meet?

Ozen's girls 4x1 47.72 #20 in the nation #15 in the state. (A. Brannon, R. Hancock, A. Booker, B. Brown)   A'Lexus Brannon easily dominated her events, Bealoved Brown and Dominique Brannon are two impressive freshmen, Robyn Hancock  and Asia Booker are sophomores,  it seems like Ozen will continue to have a strong girls program!

Don't take me wrong PA looked very good, although it is easy to lap the field when you are running 2 relay teams in every relay and 2 to three sprinters in every sprint.
[/quote]Only our varsity counted toward our point total. The real surprise is how coach foreman held out is  4x100 team  ??? ??? ???. A poor hand-off is the only reason WO-S won the 4x200 relay. ;D
