MONT BELVIEU — Barbers Hill’s girls will play Willis in a Class 4A area-round basketball playoff game Friday at 8 p.m. at New Caney High School, BH coach John Chancellor said Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Barbers Hill boys must wait for the outcome of a first-place District 20-4A playoff between Beaumont Ozen and Nederland to determine the Eagles’ bidistrict opponent for next week.

The Ozen and Nederland boys each finished 11-3 in district and will play Friday night in Port Arthur to determine first- and second-place playoff seeding.

The winner will play Barbers Hill, District 19-4A fourth-place boys finisher, in bidistrict at a site, date and time to be determined. Eagles coach Nathan Toon said he was hoping to play the game Tuesday night at Winnie.

Barbers Hill’s boys finished the regular season 22-11 overall and 7-7 in 19-4A after defeating North Forest 64-57 Tuesday night.

The 19-4A champion Lady Eagles improved to 27-5 on the year with a 66-37 bidistrict win over Little Cypress-Mauriceville in Winnie Monday night.

Willis, 27-8, tied Huntsville for the District 18-4A girls title, then advanced with a 48-42 over Manor Tuesday night in Bryan.

Before that, the Ladykats played Barbers Hill in an early-season game at the Montgomery tournament and Barbers Hill won that December game 70-61.

“They’re really good,” Chancellor said. “They’ve got a good point guard and they shoot the ball extremely well. They shoot something like 35 percent on 3-pointers.”

Senior Renata Marquez posted 20 points and 12 rebounds in a 55-49 win over Huntsville last week, with Kirsten Hinds hitting 3 3-pointers to finish with 15 points. Mesh Martin, the third of Willis’ five players averaging 10 points a game or better, led the Ladykats against Manor with 20 points and Marquez had 14.

“They’re going to be more of a halfcourt team,” Chancellor said of Willis, “and we’ll be a fullcourt team. On of our keys will be to run the ball. It’s going to be very difficult, because they’re well coached.”

Barbers Hill was led by 6-foot-4 sophomore Kendall Shaw against LC-M. She scored 24 points, blocked six shots and had five rebounds. Forward Jasmine Carter added 10 points.

The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first 3:15 of the game and were never threatened in their bidistrict game. A big reason was an aggressive Barbers Hill defense that came up with 19 steals and forced 29 turnovers in all.

“I thought our guards played really well Monday night,” Chancellor said. “We were able to apply a lot of pressure.”

The Lady Eagles started Paris Carter, Jenna Silva and Jordan Cobb at the guard spots and they platooned with Carli Manchaca, Jill Coon and Morgan Anderson.

“They are all very aggressive,” Chancellor said. “They hustle and get after the ball real hard.”

Silva led the team with five steals and she and Paris Carter each had five assists, often coming after turnovers.

Chancellor said Wednesday that starting point guard Shannon Evans, the team’s No. 2 scorer during the season, will have surgery Friday for a leg injury she suffered in the team’s final regular-season game and miss the remainder of the playoffs.

The coach has boosted his roster to 12 girls with the promotion of some players off the JV and noted that all 12 girls were able to get into the game in the first quarter against LC-M.

“They did an excellent job of overcoming obstacles,” he said. “Losing Shannon hurt, but we had people step up and make plays.”

While the Lady Eagles appeared to catch LC-M by surprise with their pressure defense at the start of Monday’s game, he expects that Willis and Barbers Hill will have few secrets Friday.

“We have played each other early on and scouted each other this week, and now it’s just a matter of preparing for Friday,” Chancellor said.

“You hope your kids can execute your gameplan better than Willis executes their gameplan.”
