MONT BELVIEU — The Barbers Hill boys did their part to ensure the Eagle Field House will be rocking for tonight’s championship round of the Gulf Coast Classic.

They defeated the Dayton Broncos 58-37 Tuesday to advance to the finale of the Gulf Coast Classic basketball tournament hosted by Barbers Hill High School.

The Eagles will play C.E. King in the boys championship game at 7:30 p.m.

That will come after Barbers Hill’s girls play Clear Springs in the girls championship game at 6 p.m.

Daniel Mitchell led the Barbers Hill boys against Dayton scoring 15 points. Teammate Jake Miller had 11 and was closely followed by Carson Asbury with 10.

Barbers Hill coach Nathan Toon said his team is fired up for tonight’s game.

“I have a smart team and they understand the circumstances,” he said. “They know what’s at stake and they’ll be pumped up and ready to go. It’s a big game and we hope to have a good crowd behind us.”

C.E. King knocked off Sterling in order to advance to the championship game in a 68-51 final. Andre Corley led the Rangers with 22 points and DeShawn Williams finished with 11.

The Rangers came away with a win earlier in the day Tuesday when they beat Nederland by a 61-54 count.

Corley led that game with 23 points and Ranger teammate Bralon Evans came away with 16.

After that game, Rangers coach Mark Patton said his team improved since Monday.

“I think we got some rust off,” he said. “We came out and executed well and played together. I’m happy with our team effort.”

Both Sterling and Robert E. Lee are still in line to play in the 4:30 p.m. third-place game.

Sterling must first win a 10:30 a.m. game against Dayton. Lee plays Nederland in another 10:30 a.m. lead-in game.

The Anahuac Panthers defeated Pasadena in a 96-60 final. The win advances the Panthers to championship round of the consolation bracket where they will take on Montgomery at 1:30 p.m. today.

Other scores for Tuesday’s games include:

Huffman 54, Livingston 34.

Pasadena 54, Cypress-Mauriceville (LC-M) 53

Montgomery 52, LC-M 48

Huffman is scheduled to take on Pasadena at 10:30 a.m. today.

The Barbers Hill girls basketball team came up in second place in the Gulf Coast Classic and was followed by the boys who did the same thing.

The Eagles lost 65-60 to C.E. King in the Championship game.

Austin Crawley had the most points with 20. C.E. King’s Patrick scored 20.

The Eagles record now stands at 15-5.

“The kids competed hard,” Barbers Hill coach Nathan Toon said. “They’re real competitors who really hate to lose. That’s the kind of attitude anyone who coaches or plays has. I think that’s one that will drive us and help us win games.”

The game was back and forth all night, and went down to the wire. The Eagles went into the fourth quarter trailing 41-39.

With 1:30 left to play, Johnson’s dunk gave the Panthers a comfortable 59-53 lead as C.E. King didn’t look back.

The teams began to exchange free-throws and that’s where the Panthers put the stamp on the Eagles.

“We found ourselves in positions to win the game tonight, but couldn’t quite pull it off,” Toon said. “Hopefully we’ll be able to finish the job from here on out.”

The Eagles and Panthers are scheduled to rematch on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Like Wednesday night’s game, The Eagles will host Tuesday night’s game. Toon said he hopes Wednesday night’s loss will give them motivation.

“It’s been a good tournament with a lot of competition and I think in the end this will motivate us to keep pushing harder. We’ll be ready to go.”

The boys all-tournament team consists of the following:

Montgomery—Trent Phillips

Anahuac—Jordan Tarver

Sterling—Andre Corley

Sterling—DeShawn Williams

Nederland—Dionte Forney

Nederland—Chris Cunningham

Barbers Hill— Carson Asbury

Barbers Hill— Jake Miller

C.E. King—JaTavius McCardell

C.E. King—Emonte McMillian

Tournament MVP: C.E. King—Bennie Batiste

The following were named to the girls all tournament team:

Mayde Creek— Jazzmin Parker

Fort Bend Austin—Pearl Ubaru

Beaumont Ozen— Asia Booker
