Here is what happened from a source close to the situation.....

A woman was being mouthy and degrading the players and coaches. A guy two rows down had enough and told her to quiet it down due to kids and coaches family members in the area they were sitting. He then followed that up by telling her she did not know what she was talking about anyways. Her husband decides to get involved and stands up to say a few things. A guy between them tries to calm it down. The husband takes a swing at the guy two rows down, but hits the guy in the middle. The guy in the middle protects himself and unleashes about 3 to 5 shots to the husbands face. Cops come and escort the husband and middle man out. After sorting through it the middle guy is allowed back in after explaining he was trying to play peace maker and only defending himself.

This might not be verbatim, but pretty close to what happened.

This has been brewing for years. People are not happy with some of the coaching staff and there will be a lot of tension until Burnett is gone.

Proud, you're the best man.  Hey, I don't blame the guy who had enough of the loud mouth.  She should've been told to shut the heck up and sit down.  If she has a right to yell kids names and coaches names, then you have the right to call her out and shut her up, plain and simple.  And this sort of thing goes on everywhere, just not the fists flying, folks in PNG do stuff right.

And the moral of this story: Always be aware of the middle man, he's always in a position to be the spoiler.

2007 Coach Of The Year ? Not taking up for him but when you play a ball control offense and only bring 1 starter back on defense your going to struggle. As far as the chatter in the stands people need to be award of who they are sitting by. Rude comments about players are unacceptable, Coaches on the other hand have to live with this B.S. along with their families. I'm really surprised more of this fighting has not happened, people are very vocal in the stands nowadays and it should not be that way. I myself have wanted to choke a guy or two but Father has prevailed. Before them lips get to waggling think first. Losing causes all this. Finally, even the allmighty Indians can have a down year.

The district coaches chose him coach of the year last year to keep him around longer.  ;D

I really get tired of people posting about PNG having one bad year and they will be back, blah, blah, blah...For those that live in the district and follow the program we know that it is not just "One Down Year". On the contrary, last year we had "One Up Year". Like I said before, Matt does not adjust to suit his talent year in and year out. Last year he had the hosses to be a power football team and it worked out as it does about every 3 or 4 years.

p.s. this still doesn't mean it is OK to throw punches in the stands! I am embarassed about it. Where is the Honor, Pride and Tradition?

I agree that folks in the stands need to do a better job of keeping their comments to themsleves...i would assume that no one goes to their jobs and yells at them telling them how to do it, but the coaches are grown ups and I imagine any coach worth his salt is bothered very little by comments from people who by and large don't know what the hell they are talking about anyway...coaches are with these kids everyday and study things that none of us are privvy to, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt...(if any of the fans spend 80 hours a week getting ready for the game, then you are free to comment as you wish)the problem there is that some of the morons making dumb comments are sitting near friends and/or relatives of some of these coaches and they really should exercise more tact.

No as far as criticizing kids...that is just inexcusable...i think that most people forget that these are 15-18 year old boys, not men...any fan who calls out a kid during a game is just a complete loser IMO and has issues that probably require psychiatric attention and if you are sitting next to one of the parents (especially a mom) you may end up requiring medical attention as well.

Good post, I totally agree with you!  Tension is high, no doubt, at PNG this year. We have a brand new stadium and would love to  be in the playoffs.  Whether its the coaches or the talent on the team, who knows.  One thing for sure is that its a lot easier coaching from the stands than it is on the sideline...hmmmm! ;)

You are right about that NDN, tensions are higher when the team is losing...most people don't know how to handle adversity and this is how they react.

Again, any fan who spends 80 hours a week preparing for a HS footbal game, my comments about criticising coaches do not apply to you...feel free to ramble all you want about how crazy your coaching staffs are ;)

Maybe Matt and company should come sit in the stands this Friday Night!  ;D

Being a coach is a demanding job, I agree. They have to mold young boys into young men and hope that they execute on Friday night to save their jobs, but the guy at the top is also being payed handsomely (compared to teachers) to put the kids in a position to succeed and should be questioned when it is felt that he is not doing that.

But I also agree that calling out a kid is un-called for. They bust their butts for the love of the game and for the smile on our face when they get it right. Until the kids get paid big money, they should be applauded no matter what they do on the field!

I have said it more than once ...why would any high school coach put his or her career on the line based on 14-18 year old kids.

Talent does change ever year, new teams enter into the district ( new talent ) and the district it self remains to be one of the toughest in the state. Every team has rebuilding years , coaches know it , players know it ...it is very hard for fans to except it.

I believe that it is good for the district and area to have a more balanced district in the hope that we can have a team advance deep into the playoffs.

You can say it again, but that's not going to help PNG fans understand how their neighbors across the tracks can win through those same down years while their team wins and loses based on having the perfect personnel for a power toss running game.  If they don't have the hosses, they struggle, that's gotta be frustrating.

It is the ability to see and recognize your talent level and adjust accordingly.

This is a talent that keeps programs winning or competitive for years.

The real challenge is to come up with a plan when you have no chance of winning.

Some staffs do it better than others , and some run the same plays they ran when we were in high school.

BINGO!!!

Herein lies the problem at PNG. Not recognizing where your strengths are each year and adjusting accordingly!

Also this district is not tough any more. It is a shell of what it once was, at least this year. None of the playoff teams will advance beyond the second round and I think we could get swept in round one!

I don't believe in degrading a player because he is a kid and learns from his mistakes and some make more than others. The coaches are fair game regardless of who is in the stands. A good idea for next year is to put the family of the coaches in the 3rd tier of the press box because it will not be used during games. I really don't hear a lot of degrading as much as I hear of complaining about the play-calling. I was sitting right next to the fight and their was no degrading of the coach or any players.

Now as for as the coaching goes, alot of high school coaches go and watch the kid's in junior high all the way up to see what kind of talent he has and to evaluate his coaches, this does not happen in PNG. I have never seen Burnett except when his son was playing to be at a PNMS or GMS football game. I've seen Coach Stone at games but we are talking about a coach on a whole different level than Burnett. I've seen Neumann,English, and Robbins at several games that I have been too so that is part of the reason Nederland is successful. By the way it looks is Burnett does not have say so of who is coaching the different levels of athletics or he just does not care. He is a home town boy and he realizes that he can't do any wrong no matter how embarrassing it gets and it gets pretty embarrassing at the middle school level.

    • The locals have almost finished firing the first ever Speaker of the House from Southeast Texas upon direct order of Trump and his minions.   It's a sad day... Locals have decided that being represented by the most powerful man in the House didn't mean anything.... they'd rather a political novice to represent this part of SETX.  And why is that?  He wasn't MAGA enough for them.  Who cares that it will hurt locally... What Trump says, goes.     Just yesterday I saw Trump on television demanding that we fire Phelan... How he's a RINO, weak on the border, etc... why?  Because he wouldn't overlook the criminal actions done by Ken Paxton, one of Trump's key supporters in the effort to overturn the 2020 Election and allow Trump to remain in office despite the will of the voters.   Trump never even mentioned Covey's name, and I doubt he would recognize Covey if Covey walked up with a cup of coffee.  Who cares that it's bad for SETX?  Not the R voters from SETX!   Then I saw Covey's preacher on a different ad tell a bald face lie.  Why should Phelan be fired?  "He put Democrats in positions of power in the House."  Really?  That's been the position of BOTH parties for as long as anybody can remember.  They ALWAYS give the minority party committee chairmanships.  But in 2022 the Rs decided that the practice should stop.  Democrat voters should not be allowed a voice in the crafting of legislation if there is a single majority Republican seat in the House, according to the Rs.  Representative Government?  Never heard of it, huh? Never did I believe that we'd have an abortion ban, constitutional carry, huge cuts for school property taxes, and Texas law enforcement being greenlit to enforce immigration law.  But it all happened while Phelan was speaker.  Without a doubt, the most conservative Speaker, ever.  But still a dirty RINO for not being MAGA enough.  It would be funny if it weren't true.   I've been following politics long enough to remember when Rs couldn't get elected in Texas... I'm confident that we're headed back that direction.  I mean, it's obvious that with population shifts we'll be turning blue eventually.  I think that the behavior of the leadership of the Republican Party is going to cause that shift sooner than expected.  I won't be surprised to see Democrat Senators and possibly even a governor elected within 12 years.  Maybe less.  The Rs will be a party apparatus without a voting base behind them.
