The Dayton Broncos came from behind last Saturday night to get their second district win, 48-30 over the North Forest Bulldogs, but in talking about it the next morning, head football coach Jerry Stewart was not a happy man.

“Last night’s ball game should have never been that close,†said Stewart. “The only reason we won the game last night is because they were pitiful, too. That’s the bottom line – we were bad and they were worse.â€

The coach went on to lament the fact that he feels like his defensive players don’t take coaching – as he put it, “they just don’t listen.†He explained that four out of the front five players got whipped on every play.

“You’re not going to win that way,†stated Stewart. “This is not tennis or basketball where somebody slaps you and you get to go to the free-throw line, this is football. You’ve got to be able to get physical every now and then. They (North Forest) got a little physical and we couldn’t accept the challenge. Our defense is predicated on our front being able to command some double-teams and they whipped us all across the front. Four out of five got whipped every play – Jordan Baxter played pretty good. Dylan Bethea also played very well last night. Those two played while the others just watched. Our corners also played pretty well. There’s not many Rottweilers and German Sheppards out there right now, just a lot of poodles.â€

The coach explained there were also missed assignments. One example was that Bulldog RB Michael Sigers (20) was supposed to be hit on every play, yet on several occasions he was left alone and on more than one of those occasions he got outside because no one was even looking at him.

“Offensively, we’re still searching for a running back,†Stewart said. “Cody Green was the difference last night as he turned running back. He ran the ball effectively and did a good job. Our offensive line is the best thing we’ve got right now. They do a good job and Payton Ploch by all standards does a good job.â€

The coach bemoaned the fact however that despite his quarterback’s rushing performance, his passing was off in that he needs to hit the easy pass at times and he won’t take the easy route. The coach also discussed his other offensive weapon.

“A.J. (Dugat) did not have a good game offensively last night,†stated the Bronco Boss. “He’s not running his routes crisp enough to break double teams. It’s called discipline, and discipline, or a lack thereof, is what’s whipping us on both sides of the ball right now. Our reputation is what’s letting us survive right now, and that’s about it. If you can’t transfer the coaching and teaching done during the week to the game, then you’re always going to struggle, and right now, because of that, we’re struggling.â€

With that on his mind, Stewart looked to the team’s third district challenge – archrival Crosby.

“Crosby has the Casey kid (Chance) who’s the best running back in the district right now,†stated Stewart. “He’s got a lot of yardage and has scored a lot of points for them. If he breaks it, you’re not catching him. He’s like #20 (Michael Sigers) from last night, but he’s a better football player. They’ve also got the Frank kid (Xavier) and he’s better than any receiver we faced last night. North Forest doesn’t have a passing attack, but Crosby does and Frank does really well.â€

The coach also mentioned that Crosby may want this one worse than his players do, which is a huge concern.

Dayton has won the last 8 games in a row (including two playoff victories) with Crosby, meaning that this year’s seniors were in the third grade the last time Crosby beat the Broncos (’99, 31-21).

“They want to beat us in the worst way,†Stewart explained. “If I looked at us on tape, I’d want to beat us too, it’s embarrassing. I know what their offense is saying, ‘we’ll go out and lay half a hundred on them, and there is a chance they might. The deal is they don’t make a lot of mistakes and you usually win when you make the least mistakes.â€

It should be.  From the outside looking in as a fan the one thing I see is wrong is CHEMISTRY.  It just SEEMS like there is no flow, no one stepping up, to worried about the ranking the next morning in the paper, JUST PLAY FOOTBALL.  Hopefully they'll get their heads together.  Maybe a win against their rivals will get them plugn.  Good Luck Broncos.

Ahhhhh a real Coach i love to see the politics go right out the door ;D Any chance Stewart will open up an apprenticeship program over the summer that BH can attend  :o

Rest easy BH fan...

You just got to wait for the freshmen and 8th graders to get their crack at varsity.

You got two more lean years at BH then things will dramatically improve.

Of course, you never know if you get a transfer in that can turn the table, but BH does have excellent athletes up and coming.
