BH boys edge Forest Brook, BH girls cruise

MONT BELVIEU – This time there was a little drama.

Sure, Barbers Hill’s boys and girls wrapped up their seventh straight sweep of district track titles at Thursday’s finale of the 21-4A track championships, but not without a touch of tension.

Suspense made itself felt in the boys’ portion of the meet, as coach Dwayne Nunez’ Eagles led Forest Brook by just 10 points, 100-90, with two races to go.

But Jess Williams won the 1,600 meters for Barbers Hill, with Tim Ramsey fourth, to put the Eagles up 24 points and out of the Jaguars’ reach.

For good measure, the Eagles finished third in the 1,600-meter relay. That gave them a final tally of 126 points, 14 more than runnerup Forest Brook.

Crosby, led by Chance Casey’s three individual wins, finished third with 100.5 points.

“It was pretty nervous going in,†said Nunez, who took over coaching the BH boys at midseason a year ago. “We played with the points last night, and thought it might go down to the last race.â€

If the Lady Eagles didn’t put this one away with 63 points after Tuesday’s first seven events, then it sure seemed all academic when Shannon Mudd and Hillary Poole shot out to big early leads in easily winning the 800 meters and 100-meter hurdles, two of Thursday’s first three races.

The Lady Eagles wound up with more than twice as many points as second-place Forest Brook, 180-88. C.E. King was a point back with 87 and Crosby’s girls were fourth with 75 points.

And, as it always is with Barbers Hill, it wasn’t just the first-place finishers that did it. It was the Eagles’ depth.

“Everybody ran well,†BH girls’ coach Andy Terrasso said. “We went 1-2-3 in the 800, 1-2 in the 300 hurdles and qualified all of our relays.

“Lauren Fine stepped in on the 4x200 relay and did a good job. The hurdlers all ran personal bests. I’m just proud of the girls.â€

Mudd, who finished third in the high jump and fifth in the discus Tuesday, raced out to a big lead in the 800 meters, fought through the final turn and finished in 2 minutes, 29.96 seconds.

That was nearly 30 yards ahead of teammates Larissa Rios and Samantha Rhodes for a 1-2-3 Lady Eagle finish. Rios kicked past Rhodes on the final straightaway for second.

“Shannon has run 2:27, but with this wind, I was pleased with her,†Terrasso said. “She’s a strong girl and she was able to handle the wind better than the rest.â€

Poole had the wind at her back when she zipped to a 15.07 clocking in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing a good 10 meters ahead of runnerup Nicole Davis of C.E. King (16.50).

In the 300 hurdles, her time was 45.77 seconds and Meghan McCoy (47.15) followed her in second. Macy Moore was fourth in 49.71.

“I’ve had a real good year this year, and I’m just getting ready to move on,†Poole said.

First, though, is the Region III-4A meet at Huntsville April 25-26.

The top three finishers in each district event advance to regionals.

The Lady Eagles will have regional qualifiers in 13 slots, while the Eagle boys qualified in a dozen slots.

Williams was the workhorse Thursday, leading teammate Austin Cain to a 1-2 Barbers Hill finish in the boys’ 800, winning the 1,600, then coming back 25 minutes later and anchoring the third-place 4x400-meter relay team.

Casey backed up Tuesday’s high jump victory with an easy sweep of Thursday’s two hurdles races. He won the 110s in a wind-assisted 14.03 and came back to take the 300s in 38.03.

“Today was pretty sloppy,†said the junior who won his two races by a combined time of more than three seconds. “I want to try to go 36 at regionals and get in the 13s in the 110s.â€
