WEST ORANGE — Once they got within 6-5 of defending Class 3A state champion Jasper, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs woke up some sleeping Bulldogs.

Jasper exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth inning and added six more in the sixth as the Bulldogs went on to throttle the Mustangs 17-6 in six innings at Ronnie Anderson Park Monday afternoon in District 21-3A play.

The Bulldogs (13-3, 3-1) pumped out 18 hits, including 10 in the fifth and sixth innings to subdue the Mustangs (1-9, 1-3).

Jasper pounded out nine extra-base hits in the victory.

Bulldog outfielder Malcolm Bronson had the hottest hand, going 4-for-5 with a home run, a triple and two doubles and four runs batted in. Catcher Ty Parker was 4-for-5 with two doubles and a home run and four RBI while Justin Parsons went 4-for-5 with a home run, a double and five RBI.

The Mustangs took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Justin Sparrow drew a leadoff walk and with one Clayton Gearhart reached on an error and Bubba Gearhart singled between third and short to load the bases. Sparrow was able to score when Cody Hodge’s flyball in shallow center was dropped.

Parsons tied the game in the top of the second when he hit a home run that rattled off the scoreboard then the Bulldogs added another run on a Mustang error.

The teams combined for nine errors with the Mustangs having five and the Bulldogs had four in tricky, windy conditions.

Jasper went up 5-1 in the third as Parsons had an RBI single up the middle and Parker Phillips, who was 2-for-4, added a two-run single to right.

The Bulldogs pulled ahead 6-1 when Bronson cranked a solo home run over the centerfield fence.

The Mustangs ripped off four runs in the bottom of the fourth to get back in it.

Taylor Bonin, who was 2-for-3, had a leadoff infield single and then courtesy runner Jarvis Jones swiped second and went to third on a wild pitch with one out.

Kendall Veitch followed with a walk. With two outs, James scored on a third-strike passed ball to Jordan Darnell to make it 6-2. Clayton Gearhart followed with a single up the middle to score courtesy runner John Jefferson. Bubba Gearhart then slapped a grounder to short and a two-run throwing error led Darnall and Jefferson to come it to score.

The Bulldogs sliced four hits to tally five runs in the top of the fifth. Cord Yates, who was 2-for-5, had a RBI single up the middle to make it 7-5. Bronson came up and crushed a two-run double to left. Parson would follow with an RBI single to right and Parker popped an RBI double to up the Bulldog lead to 11-5.

How about that Malcolm Bronson!  A homerun, a triple, and two doubles.  He might have hit for the circuit if he were not so fast.  The first double was in reality a single up the middle for average folks.  But the WOS CF played it casually perhaps like for a normal runner, and Bronson just zipped on to second when he saw that it was a soft throw back to the infield.  At least that is a paraphrasing of what I heard from the Jasper announcer.  ;)

Perhaps we can get him to change the scoring to a single and SB :)

I'm surprised Malcom didn't do just that--we have discussed it one other time.

    • First pitch about to be in the books.
    • Chester will be the home team tonight.  Neches Tigers will be the visitors.
    • The locals have almost finished firing the first ever Speaker of the House from Southeast Texas upon direct order of Trump and his minions.   It's a sad day... Locals have decided that being represented by the most powerful man in the House didn't mean anything.... they'd rather a political novice to represent this part of SETX.  And why is that?  He wasn't MAGA enough for them.  Who cares that it will hurt locally... What Trump says, goes.     Just yesterday I saw Trump on television demanding that we fire Phelan... How he's a RINO, weak on the border, etc... why?  Because he wouldn't overlook the criminal actions done by Ken Paxton, one of Trump's key supporters in the effort to overturn the 2020 Election and allow Trump to remain in office despite the will of the voters.   Trump never even mentioned Covey's name, and I doubt he would recognize Covey if Covey walked up with a cup of coffee.  Who cares that it's bad for SETX?  Not the R voters from SETX!   Then I saw Covey's preacher on a different ad tell a bald face lie.  Why should Phelan be fired?  "He put Democrats in positions of power in the House."  Really?  That's been the position of BOTH parties for as long as anybody can remember.  They ALWAYS give the minority party committee chairmanships.  But in 2022 the Rs decided that the practice should stop.  Democrat voters should not be allowed a voice in the crafting of legislation if there is a single majority Republican seat in the House, according to the Rs.  Representative Government?  Never heard of it, huh? Never did I believe that we'd have an abortion ban, constitutional carry, huge cuts for school property taxes, and Texas law enforcement being greenlit to enforce immigration law.  But it all happened while Phelan was speaker.  Without a doubt, the most conservative Speaker, ever.  But still a dirty RINO for not being MAGA enough.  It would be funny if it weren't true.   I've been following politics long enough to remember when Rs couldn't get elected in Texas... I'm confident that we're headed back that direction.  I mean, it's obvious that with population shifts we'll be turning blue eventually.  I think that the behavior of the leadership of the Republican Party is going to cause that shift sooner than expected.  I won't be surprised to see Democrat Senators and possibly even a governor elected within 12 years.  Maybe less.  The Rs will be a party apparatus without a voting base behind them.
