Murky UIL waters to clear with realignment

It all comes down to this: 1.302 schools, 2 trillion combinations and two years since the last time we've all been through this.

On Thursday, the University Interscholastic League, the governing body for public high school sports in Texas, will announce its biennial realignment and reclassification.

Charles Breithaupt, director of athletics and assistant UIL director, said the fans of UIL athletic and academic competition should be prepared for a few surprises when the 2006-07 realignment comes out. But despite the conspiracy theories to the contrary, there will be no cheating by the schools.

Breithaupt laughed at what he called the ''old joke'' that goes, What is the cutoff for Class 5A? Highland Park plus two.

''We verify those (enrollment numbers) through TEA and PEEMS,'' Breithaupt said, referring to the Texas Education Agency and the standardized accounting program Texas schools use to report everything from enrollments to budgets.

Breithaupt said once enrollment numbers are gathered, UIL assigns each figure to a code - so no one can watch any individual school's name as the list preparation begins - and the 1,302 schools' enrollment numbers are fed into a computer that generates the trillions of realignment possibilities.

''We started again in the spring of 2004,'' Breithaupt said. ''The real work began again in the fall 2005.''

That, Breithaupt said, is when the new enrollment numbers are verified and decisions are made by the UIL staff.

While UIL guards its realignment and reclassification information until Thursday, Breithaupt said there are certain things he can say:

Class 5A will remain the largest UIL classification. Breithaupt said that despite the growing size of some large schools, there will not be a Class 6A in Texas with the upcoming realignment.

Each classification - except for six-man - will be represented by 32 districts across four regions. Within each district, Breithaupt added, there should be at least six teams for football - although there may be some exceptions such as there was with District 4-3A in the last realignment.

''Six is our magic number,'' he said.

There will be 245 schools in Class 5A in the next realignment. The UIL charter calls for no more than 245 Class 5A schools, Breithaupt said, and UIL plans to put as many teams in 5A as possible.

''The more teams we put in 5A, the lower those cutoffs will be,'' he said.

After 5A, UIL will aim for approximately 200 schools in each classification. Helping to raise the bottom number in 5A is the fact that there are 20 new 5A schools that did not play football at the last realignment.

The dividing lines between classes will be set at approximately half of the next higher class. For example, if the cutoff between 5A and 4A was set at 1,950, then the cutoff between 4A and 3A would be somewhere near 975.

Again, schools below 99.9 enrollment can opt to play six-man football instead of 11-man in Class A.

When finalizing district alignments, geography - specifically the distance schools need to travel to games - is UIL's main concern. Not even on the list of concerns, Breithaupt said, is keeping traditional rivalries or districts intact. Breithaupt said that if it made sense to UIL, the organization would not hesitate to split apart District 3-5A.

''We have a very definite policy that says we are not allowed to perpetuate an old rivalry,'' Breithaupt said. ''We essentially start over every time. There is no preference for traditional rivalries or traditional districts.''

Breithaupt said that the area encompassed by Region I presents particular problems for UIL.

''As you look at the map, it is shocking,'' Breithaupt said. ''The diminishing student population in West Texas is alarming. Region I is two-thirds of the state geographically, but is just a small part of the student population.''

And that diminishing student population means there will be schools dropping down a class in West Texas and the Big Country.

''Those that have been on the bubble continue to be on the bubble,'' Breithaupt said. ''Cooper has been on the bubble. Merkel has been on the bubble.''

Thats all that district needs is another competitve team :lol: I would like to see what BH could do in that district ,but the traveling would bite!! I hope the UIL Gods would place us a little closer. Here is my prediction for what it is worth.

Barbers Hill

Dayton

Crosby

Huffman

Galena Park

Channelview ( If they don't move to 5A)

For this to happen they would probally need to move Smiley & Forest Brook to the Houston District and make the two or three 4A teams with 3A numbers that are in the Houston District move down to 3A.

Question is how do you think you (BH) will do in the Houston district compared to the Golden Triangle District?? My guess for what is worth you will probably do better there than here?? Any thoughts??

BH definitly would have a better chance in the Houston district. I beleive with the Team BH has coming back next year they can get a playoff spot in either district (This is my own bias opinion). After next year BH could struggle in the GT district.

      That TDS is really flaring. Now do Biden. You have way, way, way more material. And keep that bitter "you are better than me" jealousy tone you have with Trump. You know Biden, the one you want everyone to vote for instead of Trump. Somehow you didn't acknowledge my pleas for you to die a painful death. I was quite certain that is how you would have interpreted my previous post. I guess when your focus is Trump 24/7, nothing else matters.

      I have a better one. The point that nobody wants to acknowledge is that Dems are crossing over to vote Trump in the primaries and in the general so he will win the presidency. That way Trump will get the blame when the Dems implement their sinister plan to deport all of the minorities in the country. They have already laid the groundwork...convincing everyone that Trump and Republicans are racist (without providing any proof). Then it will be just a matter of time to execute their White supremacy plan of the great purge of the dirty, unwashed, heathen, non-Whites that roam freely in this country. I think my theory is more viable than your theory. Maybe we can get some other ridiculous scenarios so we can start a poll.

      But that’s what Trump’s fanboys don’t understand.  When he talked about sexually assaulting women, y’all laughed it off as “locker room talk.”  When it was proven that he raped E. Jean Carroll, you cried that it was all an injustice… a lie. Even though he’d already confessed to doing the same thing to other women.  John McCain has suffered and sacrificed more for his country than practically anybody, except possible gold star families… and Trump called him a loser or something to that effect. “Oh, it was a joke that no one was supposed to take seriously.” But when Trump, after disrespecting the sacrifices of one of our most valiant, y’all are like “just because Trump didn’t go to Omaha Beach doesn’t mean he isn’t pro military!” Really? All you have to do is listen to what he said about McCain’s service. Not McCain as an opponent, not McCain’s political views… about the fact that the man was tortured, probably raped, and who knows what all else for over five years for swearing an oath and putting on the uniform.  But all of y’all supposedly “pro military” people just laughed along with Trump. “Good one, Sir! Maverick my new-hind! Filthy Rino!”  I don’t understand how the same people (y’all) who probably always say “thank you for your service” to any veteran still support a guy who craps on the ones who suffered the most on our behalf.  It’s baffling.

      Wow. Do you actually believe your little scenario has any chance of alleviating you of your moral immaturity? Deflection at it's best...or worse. You seem to be a sad case. If you died today, I would be remiss if not attributing your cause of death to severe TDS, and of course, Covid. Look at that. I just made a joke about your death. You did not get offended. Nobody was offended. Not one person will accuse me of being hateful towards fellow human beings. But yet, you hate Trump because he made a similar crude comment about McCain. You tried to attribute that comment as evidence Trump hates the military. What grade level of schoolchildren do you think is laughing at you for that "less that adolescent" (hint, hint) comment. You used one crude comment in an attempt to justify your TDS. Now, when called on it, you try to deflect the whole topic. You are certainly not having any fun with this, but you sure are providing entertainment for the board. It's a shame you can't join in on the fun. I think even Big Girl might be to the point of giggling at the shamelessness you are exhibiting.
