OlDawg Posted 1 hour ago Report Posted 1 hour ago THE DAWGS DON’T TAKE THE BAIT: La Porte rolls past Baytown Sterling with another statement win. Coming off an emotional, physical, and hard-fought victory over the state’s No. 4-ranked team a week ago, La Porte had every reason to approach Friday night’s matchup against a 5-2 Baytown Sterling squad with caution. The ingredients for a classic trap game were all there. The Bulldogs had just experienced the highs and demands of a signature win, and the challenge now was to avoid a letdown against a hungry Rangers team. The Dawgs didn’t take the bait. Instead, La Porte came out firing, put the game out of reach early, and delivered another impressive offensive performance, piling up nearly 600 yards of total offense and 55 points on the scoreboard. It was another statement from a team that continues to grow in confidence, consistency, and depth as the season moves toward its most important stretch. Junior quarterback Josh Wells was nearly flawless, completing 14 of 15 passes for 275 yards and five touchdowns while adding another 30 yards on the ground. His favorite target on the evening was junior receiver Peyton Smith, who turned in a record-breaking performance, hauling in eight catches for 200 yards and four touchdowns to establish a new La Porte single-game receiving-yardage record. Smith’s historic night was made possible not only by Wells’ precision but also by the work happening around them. Freshman Cam Wallace quietly continued to make his presence felt, adding 40 receiving yards and a touchdown of his own while delivering the blocks that helped spring Smith for big plays. It was another example of a young player understanding that making an impact sometimes means doing the work that never makes the highlight reel. Of course, no Bulldog offensive recap would be complete without junior running back Sean Simon. The four-star prospect added 120 yards and two touchdowns on just 12 carries before calling it an early night. With the Bulldogs building a comfortable lead, the opportunity to rest one of the state’s premier running backs also gave others a chance to step forward. And step forward they did. Sophomores KD Dieudonne and junior Kaleb Ceasar made sure Sterling’s defensive front received no relief when Simon left the game. Both ran with an unmistakable physical edge, punishing defenders and keeping the pressure on a Ranger defense that had hoped the challenge might ease as the evening progressed. Sophomore quarterback Micah Weaver, along with receivers Carson Williams and Elijah Breaux, also demonstrated the kind of depth that can become invaluable as the season advances. They competed through the physicality, showed their readiness, and reminded everyone that La Porte’s roster extends well beyond its most recognizable names. Sharing a roster with two of the state’s top receiving prospects does not make their contributions any less important. THE TRENCH BULLIES SET THE TONE. For all the gaudy numbers, the touchdowns, and the record-breaking catches, the story begins where it always should: up front. Tim Giddens, Matthew Lozano, Kasen Metcalf, Isaac Camarillo, Francisco Guzman, and Ryker Reynolds continue to embody the spirit of La Porte’s famed “Trench Bullies.” This group has weathered adversity throughout the season, yet the improvement has been evident, snap after snap. They bring physicality, mental toughness, and an attitude to every collision. They open running lanes, protect the quarterback, finish blocks, and create opportunities for their teammates to make plays. Whether they are putting a defender on the ground, driving the pile forward, helping a ball carrier across the goal line, or providing an escort downfield, these Bulldogs understand their assignment. Reynolds, in particular, has shown that a big man can make an impression well beyond the line of scrimmage when he gets the opportunity to lead the way downfield. Their contributions may not jump off the stat sheet, but without their work, much of that stat sheet would be empty. Great offenses are built on great individual talent, but great offensive football begins with five men working together as one. La Porte’s offensive line is increasingly looking the part. A DEFENSE FINDING ITS IDENTITY. While the offensive fireworks are difficult to miss, the progress on the other side of the football deserves equal recognition. Keeping detailed defensive notes while calling an offensive play-by-play broadcast is no easy task, and it is frustrating to know some of the defensive contributions may not receive the attention they deserve. But anyone who has followed this team throughout the season can see the growth. This defense has embraced a next-man-up mentality, made adjustments in personnel and scheme, and steadily improved its ability to put players in positions to make plays. More importantly, the Bulldogs are making those plays. They are getting multiple hats to the football, tackling with greater conviction, maintaining coverage, and bringing an intensity to the point of contact that has become increasingly evident over the past several weeks. This is a defense playing with confidence, physicality, and a growing sense of identity. Up front, Juan Cantu, Jacob Berneathy, and Niko Poelinitz helped disrupt Sterling’s offensive rhythm, forcing Noah Benitez and Ke’maijae Fields to continually adjust their paths and work for every opportunity. In the secondary, AJ Bellow, Jasean Cherry, Jim Gonzalez, Brooks Stout, Kylen Carter, and Tyson Braunsdorf turned in strong performances, keeping receivers in front of them and flying to the football. Outside of two highly disputed pass-interference calls, the Bulldogs largely limited Sterling’s opportunities to create explosive plays through the air. Ricardo Acevedo, Cale Carnish, and Zach Tarango also delivered important contributions, helping contain the running game while handling their responsibilities in coverage when called upon. Sterling struggled to establish a consistent rhythm, and the Bulldogs made sure the Rangers never found the sustained momentum they needed to make things interesting. The defensive improvement is becoming harder to ignore. The effort is there, the adjustments are showing up on the field, and the results are beginning to follow. THE NEXT CHALLENGE IS ALREADY WAITING. The Bulldogs can enjoy this one for a little while. They have earned that opportunity. But the calendar offers little time to linger. Next Friday, a talented Beaumont United squad arrives at Bulldog Stadium looking to crash the party and disrupt La Porte’s momentum. The stakes continue to rise, and the margin for error continues to shrink. The good news? The Bulldogs control their own destiny. If La Porte continues to improve, prepares with purpose, and commits to winning the play directly in front of it, this team has every opportunity to keep moving toward the goals it has established for itself. That responsibility, however, does not belong to the players and coaches alone. BULLDOG NATION, it is our turn. Get your tickets. Pull out those orange sweatshirts, blankets, and pom-poms. Make your plans, bring your family, and fill Bulldog Stadium next Friday night. These young men are putting in the work. They are fighting through adversity, improving every week, and representing La Porte with the toughness and determination this community has come to expect. They deserve a home crowd that matches their energy and reminds every opponent what it means to walk into Bulldog Stadium. From here on out, every game carries the weight of a playoff game. Every possession matters. Every snap is an opportunity to take another step toward something special. The Bulldogs are doing their part. Now it is time for the rest of us to do ours.Fill the stands. Bring the noise. Protect home field. Because when Bulldog Nation shows up together, this place becomes more than a stadium. It becomes an advantage. And there is still plenty of football left to play. Our goals still lie before us. One snap at a time, one game at a time. One Team. One Heartbeat. Enjoy the weather, and let's get ready for next Friday night. Have a great weekend, everybody. This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up Quote
