Lee could have put the hammer down on Sterling had they wanted.  Add to that, it was in a monsoon.

BMT, Lee was missing a LOT of players in that first game.  We had Jarvis, but we were missing quite a few players.  That teams is not the same team that Lee has been putting on the field the last 2 weeks.  It remains to be seen how bad it will hurt to lose Jarvis.  I imagine it will hurt pretty badly on offense, but Lee has a stout defense this year.

From the Baytown Sun:

District favorites face off tonight

By Dave Rogers

Published October 12, 2007

It was a serious question, but it didn’t sit well with Craig Stump.

The Beaumont West Brook head coach did a spit-take with his morning coffee Thursday when asked about tonight’s game between his 4-1 Bruins and Lee’s Ganders being the District 21-5A championship game.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at West Brook’s Durley Stadium.

“This is the district championship game?†was his incredulous verbal response, coming after he sort of composed himself.

“How can you say that when you have four other games left to play?â€

But what else would you call a meeting between the two teams picked months ago to be the top two teams in the eight-school league?

And when those two teams are both so-far undefeated (2-0) in

district play? And when they rank No. 1 (West Brook) and No. 2 (Lee) in both team offense and team defense?

The fact that both teams lost their top running backs to injury a week ago (Lee’s Jarvis Moore, West Brook’s Albert Williams) isn’t getting a lot of sympathy around 21-5A.

Nor does anyone think the teams won’t keep going full-speed ahead on offense.

“Losing your running back like that takes a lot out of you as far as what you’re going to do,†Stump said. “You just have to adjust.â€

Junior Paul Martinez, backup running back for Lee (3-2 overall), rushed for 100 yards in last week’s 28-0 win over archrival Sterling. The Ganders also got a boost from former No. 1 quarterback Josh Jones, who ran for 36 yards on seven carries.

Coach Dick Olin hoped to have Kevin Craft, the district’s leading receiver and sometime running back, return from an ankle injury. And freshman receiver C.J. Mixon, a standout runner for Gentry Junior a year ago, has been taking practice snaps in the backfield.

Lee’s No. 1 challenge should involve 5-foot-10 quarterback Octavio Torres passing the ball downfield over a West Brook line that includes a trio of 6-foot-5 defensive ends in Marcus Malbrough, Blake Chavis and Shane McCardell and 6-foot-4 tackle Roland Bordelon.

“They’re going to throw screen passes, I’d imagine, until the cows come home,†Stump said.

Offensively, the Bruins will look for junior Christine Michael to pick up the slack left by Williams. Both Michael and Williams had rushed for more than 400 yards this year.

Junior quarterback Christian Louis has a trio of experienced receivers to throw to. But senior Joshua Powdrill , whose 26 catches are one fewer than Craft’s total of 27, has been the Louis’ go-to receiver.

West Brook’s offensive line, anchored by 6-4, 280-pound Ryan Pollard, the brother and son of NFL players, was a question mark coming into the season.

“They’re playing good,†Stump said of his team’s blockers, “but they’re going to have to play good for sure.â€

That’s because the Bruin coach is really impressed with the Lee defense, which has allowed just 463 rushing yards this season, fewest of any 21-5A team.

“Their defensive line is really good, and so are their linebackers and they’ve got two defensive backs (Reggie Butler and Thomas Bates) that were all-district last year,†he said. “They’ve got a lot of speed and their defensive line is extreme.â€

Stump especially likes Lee’s all-district nose tackle, J.T. Cleveland.

“He’s got a lot of experience and he’s strong and athletic,†he said of the 6-1, 275-pounder, “and that helps.â€

If there’s a knock on Lee and West Brook it comes from the fact that neither team has been tested so far in 21-5A.

Lee has pitched a pair of shutouts over Kingwood (38-0) and Sterling, two teams who are a combined 0-10. West Brook’s wins came over Kingwood (50-18) and 2-3 Atascocita (44-6).

“They’re the best team we’ve played next to Westfield (a 33-24 winner over West Brook,†Stump said of the Ganders. “I think we’ll both find out where we’re at.â€
