2020 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREVIEWS

LIBERTY PANTHERS

2019 Record: 3-6 Overall; 0-4 District

5th Place in District 10-4A-II

 

In 2019, the Liberty Panther found themselves in position that they had not been in quite a while...outside the Class 4A, Division II playoffs.  But Chad Taylor's Panthers are primed to make a return to the playoffs as eight offensive starters and nine starting defenders return to a bit larger 11-4A-II.

 

COACHING

Head Coach: Chad Taylor

Assistant Coaches: Jeff Stewart (Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers), Nolan Lanham (Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line), Joe Slack (Running Backs/Cornerbacks), Landon Hessler (Safeties/Running Backs), Harold Hayman (Defensive Line/Offensive Line), Martin Massey (Outside Linebackers)

 

OFFENSE

Nine starters return to an offense which will switch to a more traditional Wing T set in 2020 that will provide for more versatility.  Junior quarterback Austin Walker will return as the Panther triggerman.  Senior running backs Terrick Peterson and Jaydon Harris, as well as junior back Johnny Harris-Hines, return to lead the Liberty rushing attack.  Sophomore back Manny Freeman and freshman Ben Lannom will also get carries.  Senior tight end Devin Fregia (1st team all-district) brings some experience to the Liberty rushing game.  Senior offensive linemen Wyatt Tully (1st team all-district), Seth Sterns, Blaine Rich and Tyler Johnson return to a line which will also include junior linemen Dylan and Zach Davis.

 

DEFENSE

Eight starters return to the Liberty defense in 2020.  Junior defensive lineman Titus Bell and senior lineman Matthew Porsche return to lead the defensive line.  Peterson (1st team all-district at outside linebacker) and Harris (2nd team all-district at inside linebacker) will lead the linebacker corp which will also include Lannom.   The Panther secondary returns intact as senior free safety Josh Chandler, junior strong safety Austin Walker, senior cornerback Vincent Harris and junior cornerback Mason Goudeau will patrol the Panther secondary with Freeman, senior Cedric Jones and freshman Alex Valtierra also contributing.

 

SPECIAL TEAMS

Victor Ruiz will handle the place kicking for Liberty.  Harris-Hines will be the primary kick returner.
