2020 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREVIEWS

JOAQUIN RAMS

2019 Record: 10-3 Overall, 5-1 District

Class 2A, Division I Region III Semifinalist

 

The 2019 Joaquin Rams under Wade Lawson had a outstanding season as the Rams landed a Co-District championship and advanced to the Class 2A, Division I Region III Semifinals.  To surpass or match 2019's success, Lawson will rely on five offensive starters and four defenders to compete in the rugged new 12-2-A-I.

 

COACHING

Assistant Coaches: Jon Jones (Defensive Coordinator), Jared Jones (Offensive Coordinator), Mike Lawson, Chad Lawrence, Reed Westbrook, Jared Cook

 

OFFENSE

Five starters return to the Ram Slot-T in 2020.  Returning as the Joaquin triggerman will be senior quarterback in Chandler Pritchett.  Returning to join him in the backfield will be senior fullback Cayden Atkinson and sophomore running back Maddox Hutchins (1st team all-district at tight end), who will also see sophomores Malik Stotts and Cole Bragg.  Expect Bragg to figure in the Ram passing game along with senior tight end Drew Fuller (2nd team all-district).  Fuller will also be busy on the offensive line along with the Rams' returning center, senior Blake Cummings (1st team all-district), and juniors Chris Harper, Jack Thomas and Nahum Rivera.

 

DEFENSE

Four starters return to the Joaquin 4-2-5 defense in 2020.  As he is on the offense, Cummings (1st team all-district) will lead things up front from his defensive tackle position.  Senior Drew Fuller will also provide leadership at defensive end.  Atkinson and junior Jose Mares will line up at linebacker.  Hutchins (2nd team all-district team all-district at outside linebacker in 2019) will anchor the Ram secondary, which will also include Stotts at weak safety, from his strong safety spot.

Special teams positions will be determined during preseason practice.
