GRAPELAND SANDIES

2018 Record: 10-2 Overall, 5-0 District

District 12-2A-II Champions

 

The Grapeland Sandies made themselves right at home in District 12-2A-II in 2018 as the Sandies swept through its district slate to take the district championship.  In 2019, they will have a new face on the sidelines as Terry Ward, who comes over from Harleton, takes over the program.  While the Sandies will be learning new offensive and defensive schemes, the returning veterans (6 offensive starters and 8 defensive starters return in 2019) will be ready for Sandy Nation to make a long run.

Assistant Coaches: Blake Doughty (Defensive Coordinator), Cameron Besetzny (Offensive Coordinator/Wide Receivers), Kevin Anderson (Strength and Conditioning/Running Backs/Outside Linebackers), Matthew Gayle (Offensive Line/Defensive Line), Tracy Cooper (Secondary/Wide Receivers), Tyler Terry (Tight Ends/Defensive Line)

Offense:

Six starters return to the Grapeland offense which will be switching to the spread.  Junior B.J. Lamb (1st team all-district at wide receiver) will key the Grapeland offense in 2019.  Junior running back Keke Ashford and sophomore Cadarian Wiley will lead the Sandy running attack.  Senior wideouts Deco Bryant and Kaden Dupree return to key a receiver group that will also feature senior Cooper Ward.  Senior tackle Chanellor Francis and sophomore guard Landon Jackson will lead the Grapeland offensive line.

Defense:

Eight starters return to the Grapeland defense in 2019.   Sophomore nose guard Jason Decluette (1st team all-district) will lead a defensive line which will also feature Francis (2nd team all-district) and Ashford (1st team all-district).  Look for Zamorian "Poo" Smith to see significant time on the line.  Wiley (12-2A-II Defensive Newcomer of the Year) will lead a group that will also include junior outside linebacker Cooper Sheridan, senior inside linebacker Josh Black and junior inside linebacker Gavin French.  Lamb, Dupree and Bryant will be joined by sophomore Mike Dancer in the Grapeland secondary.

Special Teams:

The place kicking and punting duties will be finalized during summer practice while Lamb will be the primary kick returner.
