OK, maybe in the Hill Country and Hardin county - but if you go down south your gonna need a bigger gun.

I think it is .223 but it might be 5.56 NATO. I need to find my boxes and look for sure.

Federal Tactical Bonded Boat Tail Soft Point 62 gr.

It usually retains 100% of the weight of the round and expands up to 50 caliber in ballistic gelatin.  It goes about 20" deep and expands to .44 caliber in the gelatin after going through two 3/4 inch plywood sheets and so on.

It is some pretty devastating rounds that Federal has hit the market with recently. I have not shot it at a deer and don't know that I would but I think the round clearly outperforms other .223/5.56 rounds on the market.

EDIT: Even though it is a great round, the problem with the .223/5.56 is downrange. Try to drop a 5.5 year old once in a lifetime deer at 250 yards with it and you might be disapointed with the terminal ballistics. At 100 yards it is more than enough gun.

I am 53 and I've hunted since I was about 6.  I always thought you had to have a 30-30 or larger until about 10 years ago.  I started hunting whitetail with a Savage 22-250.  Ive killed at least two every year and I have never had one to get up after the shot.  The bullet is small but release at lot of kinetic energy on impact.  Don't lose any meat either.

too bad no one put up the shot gun i got a 12-ga remingington express pump with a rifled mossburg slug barrel when you use the winchester rifled slugs drop line trajectory of a 100 yards that bad mamajamma doesn't start to drop till 100 yards and with a limbsaver butt pad on the stock it's recoil is like a .223... any other shot gun hunter out there

I started off using a .243 as a kid and later got a .300 win mag because I was tired of tracking deer, even when shot good.  On a trophy class animal I put it right through the front shoulders and it USUALLY drops them in their tracks, except for elk.  I did't mind the recoil of the mag but didn't like it either so I put a brake on and regret the day that I did.  One shot with a break and my left ear goes deaf for a few minutes and rings for the rest of the day.  I started taking ear muffs to the stand to keep this from happening but they are a pain to keep up with and a bigger pain to put on in a rush situation.  This past summer I bought a Tikka T3 Light in .270 wsm and I love it.  Best shooting gun that I ever owned, even better than my Rem 700 bdl .300 win mag. which has been customized a great deal.  Can't wait to see how it performs on deer this year.  Saw someone mention the 25 wsm and was wondering if it is suitable for a young kid, 6 yo, and how it compares to a .243.

Duckbutter, I purchased a Model 70 25 WSSM when they hit the market.  It had a fast  kick to it.  It shot quarter sized patterns at 200 yards.  I bought it to thin down doe populations in South Tx.  For a kiddo, I'd maybe look at a break from Ray Perry in Bridge City.  As you mentioned, it will be louder and require ear protection.  I put a break on my 300 Win Mag and it will make you deaf.  You may look at the 700 SF II, from Remington, it is very heavy, but sure takes the kick out of it.  I'm almost certain the Rem 700 SF II comes chambered in 25 wssm

I shoot a .270 and it works just fine. I have a friend who shoots a .25-06 and he has dropped so many deer in their tracks its not funny so we named it the meet getter.

Wildfire, go to www.southeasttexas.com, they usually have one or two .270s for sale and Gander Mt. in Beaumont has a good selection of guns, both new and used.  If you can find a Model 70 in decent shape, I'd buy it.  I highly recommend the .270 Winchester Model 70, from experience.  Mine shoots the old Federal Premium 130s the best

    • Manchin may get it but any mention of the radical left that wanted to get rid of the filibuster and end almost 220 years of history because the Democrats are mad?  The House and Senate are obviously different legislative bodies with entirely different election processes and rules for a reason. The House can vote on laws with a simple majority vote. The Senate put rules in place that it would make it much tougher to pass laws. Laws should be difficult to pass. The Senate is often the holdup of the right and left. It takes 60 votes to break the filibuster so any law will almost certainly require agreement at least in part, from opposing sides of an issue. Because they can’t get laws passed, the radical left is like a baby having a tantrum and wants to change over 200 years of history and make it potentially ridiculously easy to pass laws. I have seen current poll maps and it is possible for the Republicans to sweep into complete power in November but by the tiniest margin. That would possibly mean that a single vote margin in both houses could enact what you might call the radical right laws. There would be nothing that the Democrats could do to stop any legislation whatsoever if the left (they are all radical, minus Manchin) got their filibuster rule changed.  That is where the current filibuster comes into play as any new law would require several Democrats to agree with the majority Republicans and vice versa.  Do you want the potential for your radical right to have free rein as the radical left wants by killing the filibuster or is the radical left just as (if not more) dangerous? Let’s see if we have a history in this area? Oh yeah, the Democrats changed the rules in the Senate to allow federal judges to not have to overcome the filibuster. Obama was not getting his federal judge nominations passed and being angry, they changed the rules instead of nominating more moderate justices. They were warned that it would come back to bite them. They didn’t care and chose the nuclear option to change the rules. Oops! Any guess how Trump got all of his Supreme Court nominees passed against strong Democrat opposition? The Democrats got rid of the filibuster for federal judges after another tantrum   So when you are so worried about the radical right, are you equally concerned in what the radical left is always doing by changing rules and history which were put into place just for situations like we are in? So while Manchin gets it, what about his other 50 colleagues (49 + Harris)?  What concerns you more, Abbott and Paxton or the Democrats who want to make it to where if the Republicans do take over, they can go wild… at least in your mind?
    • MODS please remove that ISD twitter link! I had no idea it would copy the whole posting. I only highlighted the portion about the venue change. Sorry about that!

    • Come on dude, don’t take anything away from the kids on the field. If you want to talk uncharacteristic, we made what 3 or 4 errors in game one. Y’all had 2 EARNED runs.  Defense is normally our strong suit. Your ace didn’t strike out a single one of our kids. Like I said also, you did not out hit us in game 1. Hell you barley out hit us in game 2. We had all the uncharacteristic walks. Josh pitched a hell of a game is what made that game what it was.
