LITTLE CYPRESS — It was a weird night at Don Gibbens Field, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville left the Kelly Bulldogs in the fog — literally.

The Battlin’ Bears piled up 12 hits, six for extra bases, to bombard the Bulldogs 12-4 in first-day action Thursday in the Don Gibbens Tournament.

The fog was intense for most of the contest, had a slight break in the middle and really got thick in the final two frames were more than half the hits came on outfielders not being able to see the ball.

First baseman Chad Richard led the Bear hitting parade, going 3-for-4 with a double and a triple. Third baseman Stefan Cloeren was 2-for-4 and drove in two runs while shortstop Chris Hearn belted a two-run home run.

Dallas Brown nabbed the win on the hill for the Bears, working three innings and allowing just one hit while striking out five. Aaron Milligan hurled the other three innings, allowing five hits, four of them fog-aided, and struck out one.

In other action at the tourney Thursday, the Crosby Cougars, coached by former West Orange-Stark standout Marcus Thompson, downed Kelly 10-6 and Hamshire-Fannett downed District 21-3A rival Hardin-Jefferson 6-4.

Today, Crosby meets H-F at 11:30 a.m., LC-M battles H-F at 2 p.m., Crosby faces H-J at 4:30 p.m. and LC-M tangles with H-J at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, H-F meets Kelly at 11:30 a.m.; Kelly takes on H-J at 2 p.m., and LC-M faces Crosby at 4:30 p.m. All the games are set for a two-hour time limit.

The Bears racked up four runs in the first inning off the Bulldogs.

Ben Jones drew a lead-off walk, swiped second and went to third on an error. Jake Rowell drew a walk and then Cloeren plated two runs off Kelly starter Charlie Jones with a sharp double off the left centerfield wall. Chad Richard doubled to right and then Tim Barry hit a grounder to second and the ball was overthrown at first, allowing two runs to score.

LC-M tacked up two more on the scoreboard in the second when Phillip Richard doubles to right and Hearn ripped a two-run shot over the left centerfield fence.

Two more runs came the Bears’ way in the third as Chad Richard walked, went to second on a sac bunt by Barry and scored on an Adam Leggett double to left and Leggett eventually scored on a Phillip Richard grounder that got booted.

LC-M scored its final four runs in the fourth. With one out, Rowell doubled to left and Cloeren drove in the ninth run with a single up the middle. After Chad Richard and Barry followed with back-to-back singles, Stefan Leger brought in the other three runs with a fog-aided single that rolled all the way to the right-field corner.

Kelly scored a run in the first when Doug Prewitt scored on a wild pitch.

The Bulldogs tallied two runs in the fifth on an Anthony Fazio single and a Tyler Falgout fielder’s choice. The Bulldogs tallied the game’s last run via an ear error the fog in the top of the sixth.

    • We had the same type of rules when Coach Stone was at PNG.
    • I’m curious to see if this will happen next season .
