Nederland Babe Ruth League has two separate divisions. The prep division is for 13 year olds only. It is a transition division from smaller little league fields to the larger regulation diamond. The major division is for 14/15 year olds. We keep the 13 year olds separate from the older kids as there is quite a physical difference in these ages and most of the 14 and 15 year olds are playing high school ball as well.

I have received several calls over the last several days about our program vs. some of the other youth league programs in this area.  I would like to shed some light on our program at Nederland Babe Ruth for any folks who may not be familiar with our organization.  Babe Ruth Baseball is an international organization headquartered in Trenton, NJ.  In SE Texas locally, there are two separate Babe Ruth organizations.  Nederland Babe Ruth Bob Harmon Park is located at 3300 Park Drive in Nederland and is open to youth ages 13-15, and Mid-County Babe Ruth is located at the Nederland High School Metreyon-Delahoussaye Field and is open to youth ages 16-18.  The two leagues operate independently from one another due to the large age difference in its participants, but often work together when hosting State and/or Regional Tournaments.

Nederland Babe Ruth League has been in existence since the 1950's and has seen great success throughout the years.  Teams in all three age divisions are perennial State, Regional and World Series Championship contenders.  The league's most recent success came in the 2014 season with the 13 year old tournament team making it all the way to the World Series in Glen Allen, VA.  The league is open to any age eligible child who resides or attends school in Jefferson, Orange and Hardin Counties, and we STRONGLY encourage players who reside in this geographical boundary to come play with us and strengthen our All-Star teams.  We want the best in the area to come play at NBR  to represent Southeast Texas in All-Star tournament competition.  All-Star competition is played in tournament fashion much like the select tournaments played at Ford Park and other facilities.  State Tournaments are generally three day weekend tournaments held in any number of locations between Nederland and Bay City/Wharton/Lake Jackson areas.  Regional Tournaments are longer, generally week long tournaments held in any one of the Southwest Region sites (TX,OK,LA,AR,MS).  These are double elimination tournaments.  If a team advances to the World Series in their age division, they could play anywhere in the US.  World Series Tournaments are held in a different host location each year.  These tournaments are very large and are of the pool play to bracket play variation and are complete with parades and banquets for the participants... a once-in-a-lifetime memorable experience for those lucky enough to participate.

Unlike other organizations like Senior Little League, the 13 year old division is kept separate from the older 14/15 year old division, as this 13 year old year is a transition from the smaller Little League sized field to the regulation sized diamond.  Furthermore, we have found that there is just too great of a gap in physical size and ability between a 13 year old and 14 and 15 year olds.  Often, the 14 and 15 year olds are also playing high school baseball, and thus throwing and hitting with much more power than a 13 year old.  Keeping these groups separate offers a safer and more even playing field for all involved.  The 13 year old division also sees new playing rules introduced.  Little League does not offer what some refer to as "real baseball rules."  Base stealing, pitchers holding runners, etc. are new facets of the game which a player coming from Little League has not yet been exposed to.  For this reason, the 13 year old division is referred to as the Prep Division.  The Prep Division generally consists of 4-5 teams and the Major Division generally consists of 8-10 teams.  All games are played at Nederland Babe Ruth Bob Harmon Park... no travelling to other facilities.

Unlike other organizations, Nederland Babe Ruth does not do mandatory fundraisers.  We will not ask you to sell a load of candy or "buyout" the fundraiser at registration.  Most of our operating funds are generated from registration fees, concession sales and area sponsors.  We will not ask you to work in the concession stand or umpire games, as we have paid workers to do this.  Just come out and watch your kid play ball... that's it.  Our registration fee is $165 for the first child and $80 for each additional in the same family... no additional fees to pay.  We also offer scholarships to those who request and show a need for assistance.  It is the policy of the NBR to allow ALL kids the opportunity for success.

I hope that I have answered any questions you might have, but if I have not please contact us at [email protected], visit our website http://nederland.baberuthonline.com, Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/nederlandbaberuth or call 409-293-1991.
