SETXsports Pre-Season Baseball Top 10
RIP09 replied to adminbaberuth's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Now that basketball is over for BH, we can turn our focus to baseball. There are a few kids coming out of basketball who will get a good look. I agree with all of those comments concerning the seniors that will make up this years team. If they stay healthy and produce, then they should start and play. As for the underclassmen, there time will come later. Here are the boys coming from basketball and what my opinion is of them. Heath Padgett (senior) will start in CF and should lead off in the lineup. This kid can hustle and play! Daniel Mitchell (Jr) will be called on for his pitching, but may be limited due to the seniors ahead of him. He is perfectly capable of pitching and hitting at the varsity level, but again he is a Jr. The big question mark will be Carson Asbury (Soph). He was moved around last year from JV to Sophomore and this year who knows! He is a big kid who can pitch and hit, but at BH he may have to wait his turn. Probably a number one starter for the JV team, based on all the seniors this year. Another Sophomore, Dylan Marshall, should start on JV. He is a good catcher and was our number one catcher last year on the sophomore team. He can hit JV pitching. His time will come, too. There are a few kids coming from the freshman basketball team who will play on this years sophomore baseball team. I am not sure of their names, so I won't attempt to mention them. There you have it. Let the games begin and see what happens. Good luck BH at all levels. I'm excited about getting Padgett and Mitchell from basketball. Padgett will definitely be in centerfield but I wouldn't expect to see him in the lead off spot. I expect Carmona will stay in that position but not sure where Padgett will end up in the order. Padgett is capable of being a very good hitter but struggled a little at the plate last year. I would expect to see him have a big year this year. You definitely won't find anybody that plays any harder than Heath. Mitchell is very capable of being an important part of the pitching staff this year. I would think he will end up being our #1 guy in relief of the starting pitchers this year and possibly even working himself into the rotation. -
BARBERS HILL BASEBALL 2009 GAME RESULTS

Barbers Hill vs. Manvel Scrimmage- Played Monday night in Manvel instead of Tuesday at home. Another good outing for BH. The pitching of Burditt, Rocha, & Peterson was solid once again. Each of them pitched 2 innings giving up a combined 3 hits and 1 run. Carmona also looked good in 2 inning of work, pitching 2 scoreless innings himself. BH lead 8 - 1 after 6 innings before putting in all subs into the batting order for 4 straight innings and our 4th and 5th pitchers of the night struggled with control. They just didn't have a good night, walking 6 - 8 batters and giving up 7 - 8 hits and allowing 10 runs in 2 1/3 innings of work. The defense once again was very solid with only 1 error on the night. Jake Ponder had another solid game behind the plate blocking and threw out another runner on a steal attempt to 2nd. Colby Henscey had another diving catch in left field and the middle infield combo of Tony Carmona and Cody Clifton was very solid making several plays and once again turning a double play. Rocha and Peterson both played well at 1st Base again. Although not hitting quite as well as the first game BH still put 10 runs on the board with 10 hits. Matt Peterson had another homerun with a 3-Run shot in the first inning, Henscey was 1 for 2 with 3 RBIs, Rocha had an RBI hit, Burditt had 2 hits, Ponder had 2 hits and a couple RBIs. BH put up 6 runs in the 1st inning. Feel free to correct me if I left anything out. -
Kendall Thamm gets his 1st of many collegiate wins with an outstanding performance against Wharton. Thamm throws a complete game 7 innings giving up only 4 hits in a 2-1 win. I'm sure Eagle07 probably has the strikeout totals which I would guess to be around 6 but not sure. Great performance from a great kid and I'm glad I could be there to witness it! Congrats to Kendall and Eagle07!

Barbers Hill in 4A -
BH 14 BAY CITY 9 A very solid start to the season. BH ended up winning the game 14 - 9. BH's top 3 pitchers, Peterson, Burditt, Rocha, (in no particular order) all looked good giving up 3 earned runs in 6 innings, each of them pitching 2 innings. Blaine McDonald, and Cole Young both pitched well in relief in their 2 innings of work. The hitting and fielding were both highlights of the game. The defense turned in 3 double plays with Carmona and Clifton up the middle looking very sharp. Colby Henscey had a diving catch on a ball in the left center gap. Jake Ponder had a very solid game behind the plate with no passed balls, several very good blocks on pitches in the dirt, and throwing a couple of runners out at 2nd on steal attempts. Matt Peterson and Alex Rocha both had solid games at 1st base with several good digs. At the plate Colby Henscey led the way going 3-4 with 3 HR in consecutive at bats (2-run, 3-run, and solo shot) and 7 RBI, all 3 homeruns were to the opposite field on outside pitches, 2 to straight away right field and 1 to the right center power alley. Tyler Lyday also hit a crushing 2-run HR to straight away center and Matt Peterson hit a HR to the right center power alley on an outside pitch. BH had several kids with at least 2 hits on the night. Correct me if I forget someone, Henscey, Lyday, Ponder, Carmona, Peterson. BH had at least 17 hits on the night. BH plays again Friday evening at home against Bridge City.

The middle infield turrned 3 doubleplays overall at solid first outing A very solid start to the season. BH ended up winning the game 14 - 9. I don't remember Eagle07 giving such detail ;D ;D Thanks BHFAN. I did my best. Hopefully I didn't leave anything out. I went strictly from memory so I could have forgotten something. If I leave something out or get it wrong, hopefully someone will correct me. It was fun to watch, well worth the 2+ hour drive! Dang 2 hours! I'm only 5 minutes from the stadium and cant get up there LOL ;D I pretty much lived on Eagle07's updates last year due to trying to coach two little leage teams. Sounds like the Eagles are going to do well this year. I sure hope so. They definitely have the potential to do very well. At least they're off to a good start. We'll just have to see how the season plays out. It will be fun to watch! -

Don't forget, you've always got the "Rocket" if you get in a bind!
-
I think this might help but it's definitely not a guarantee. Not only that but for an athlete that is also playing other sports, finding enough time to throw is a little more difficult. A lot of it depends on the type of practice a coach runs and how much throwing is involved in the early stages of the season. You can't expect all of the kids to be in midseason form when the season is just starting. Maybe the baseball only player, but not the multisport athlete.

Parents out of bounds; respect for coaches waning

"I'll take a high school coach any day over a select coach."----Your words---both broad and ignorant. I'd have to agree with Diamond J on this one. Obviously you haven't seen many high school or select coaches. I am sure there are both good and bad from both groups, but I would never say I would take any high school coach over a select coach. The experiences of the majority of the people I know is just the opposite. You must have had one great high school coach and one completely terrible select coach to make a statement like that. -
Looks like some great battles for opening scrimmages! :o
-
It's that time of the year. With a week of practice behind us, how are the arms holding up? I know some coaches like to throw a tremendous amount in the early going trying to assess the talent. It almost always leads to some sore arms and hopefully that's all. How's everyone holding up? Hopefully everyone is staying healthy! Looking forward to a great season for all the SETX teams! Good luck to all!

I believe once you get to high school, the responsibility of the coach is to put the team in the best situation to win. Playing time is earned during practice time. When other influences other than ability determine who plays and who sits, that when credibility and respect are diminished. I can understand not playing the moron trouble making star, but when a better athlete is sitting because a kid's parent moved the coach to town or baby sits their kid's on the weekend, how do you respect that person? Well said. I agree completely! Although it does exist, there is no room for politics if your going to lead a team deep into the playoffs. -

I agree with this but you also know rather or not the coach is blowing smoke by the results of your kids play on the field. If your kids on a quality select team, they're winning, and your kid is putting up good stats I'd say that speaks for itself. It's not hard to tell if your kid isn't doing well. -

No respect for High School coaches is a two way street...in today's world there is a lot more knowledge of the sport fundamentals and a lot more of daddy's money spent on professional lessons than ever before. So where does a high school coach hibernate during the summer? Theres is no question that select or tournament baseball, basketball has evolved and developed better athletes than "most" high school programs. A lot of high school coaches are stuck in the sixties and will not accept the fact that daddy's money provides them with some of their best talent. Some kids will develop bad habits during the high school season and some stay away from high school sports altogether. Did your high school coach have it right way back then? probably not, how many coaches know how to teach pitching and will you turn your high school coach loose on your boy.....? I agree completely with both sides but almost all you ever see published by the media is the side from the coaches about the ignorant and psycho parents. I'm glad to see someone talk about the fact that not all coaches have the knowledge to teach and make kids better. Some just have the title and get by on the talent they're given. Just because they have the title of "Coach" does not make them a genius and 100% right all of the time. -
No they did not have a gun on him, though when they rated the arms from outfield he received a 4 when other varsity players only got a 3. Actually he and Leggett both got a 3.5 but your still just talking about someone's opinion. If your not putting a gun on them then you don't really know. It's just a guess. My rating and a rating from someone else is probably going to be totally different, just like my opinion of 80's is probably a little different from yours. If I'm putting someone's pitching velocity on this or any other forum it's because I know that someone checked it with a radar gun. Keep in mind also that if your going to pitch at the Varsity level you better have more to offer than just an 80 mph fastball. Fastball's at the varsity level are just batting practice unless you have another pitch or 2 to keep them off balance. Like I stated before, none of these kids are ready for Varsity baseball. It would be a shame to put them at this level and set them up for failure. They will have more than enough competition at the JV level.
-
Thompson threw a bull pen at practice yesterday and was throwing in the 80's.I heard he pitched pretty good though I've never seen him.I heard from other Varsity players that Thompson would be on Varsity. Did they have a radar gun on him and if so what did he top out at? I've seen all of the freshmen pitchers many times and Leggett is by far the best pitcher in this class. I've also talked to more than one umpire that called several of these kids games last year and during the summer and they are of the same opinion. They all agree that Leggett is the top pitcher. If anyone does any pitching with the varsity during preseason or tournaments it would be just to have the extra arms available. If it happens, it should be Leggett. If any freshmen end up on Varsity it will be a wasted year for them and a lot of bench time and I believe it would have to be based on influences other than the players ability.
-
There will not just be one player everone will have to step up and do there part on offense and defense. The pitching is there not what we have had the last 2 years. But there is a lot of talent So if we read this correctly..last year we had great pitchers " but lost to teams in the district" Last year we had great hitters " but couldn't hit when it mattered" sounds like the NY Yankees. And this year the pitching will be O.K. at best and the hitting should be better as well..? maybe we can play now because everyone is not standing around depending on a couple of stars to shine. I do believe this will be a much better "TEAM". The potential for lots of offensive fireworks and the defense should be solid as well!

Most underrated players that could make impact this year in 4A
RIP09 replied to a topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
So far all I've heard is how these guys are doing in the field on this post, but nobody seems to want to talk about their hitting. Your talking about both of these guys going from hitting 14-15 yr. old pitching to hitting varsity level pitching. I think it will take more than a just a few weeks of practice. I can see that adjustment taking a season or even more. I think putting Ponder at 3rd and Lyday behind the plate makes the lineup much stronger both offensively and defensively. Just my opinion. -
Warthog I'd have to disagree with your comments about the freshmen. Although he is a good kid and has the potential to be a good player, he is nowhere near being able to compete at the Varsity level. There isn't a freshmen in the group this year that is even close to competing in every area at the Varsity level. A few may be close with their fielding but none are close with their hitting. I'd venture to say that Kyle Leggett is the top player in the freshmen class or at least in the top 2 and even he's not ready for Varsity competition.
