Just curious why Lamar, a small commuter college in a small city, would want to go DI anyway. I would think the lack of success among the Louisiana schools (Lafayette/Monroe, etc.) would be enough reason to avoid this, at least for right now. It just seems pre-mature to me. LU has a shot at building a top notch I-AA program. Why bite off more than they can chew? Give the fans a chance to be part of a winning tradition (fill the seats, etc.) before you submit an application to what will be a sure blood fest for years to come. If you want to see empty seats at Cardinal Stadium, go DI too fast. We have proven time and again that we are fair-weather fans who flock when things are good and hide when they're not. Give the fans something to flock to for a few years, maybe forever...before jumping into the abyss. Just my two cents! God bless!
I think that Dr. Simmons is working hard to change the commuter school image and I expect that more dorms will be built over the next 5 years. We could see as many as 5k students living on campus over the next 5-10 yrs.
Javelina is correct, the regs say that you have to apply by June1 of the year before you start complying with the requirements. TT, you know that it is my hope that LU will go FBS so that was again my hope of what will happen, not inside knowledge of what will happen. it is interesting that I haven't seen anywhere on here about your thoughts on last nights game.
I thought Lamar played a heck of a game on defense. McNeese's recievers found the holes in Lamars secondary that comes with the experience of playing. Lamars D-Line was outstanding in my opinion with the exception of maybe 3-4 plays. The running game needs work but the passing was great (good recievers that know how to work the one on one open field). seemed like they abandoned the running game but I do not blame them cause it was not working and McNeese could not stop the pass. I think Bevil could have ran the ball a few times but I had the luxuary of sitting up in the stands and a birds eye view where he has the split second to decide. Overall this games gives me optamisum for this season. I am going bold and predicting 6 wins for Lamar this year!!
I'll raise you one and go 7!
Some brief thoughts from the sidelines: -Lamar does not have a running game. If they did, they may have won this one. -Lamar had 2 years to prepare for McNeese State, MSU didnt have much on LU, and did NOT do a very good job of adjusting on the run. -McNeese gave Lamar some very good gifts = fumbles. If MCN doesn't fumble, they probably win this game by 2-3 TDs. -Bevil throws a very good ball. -LU was more physical than MCN. -19,000+ in attendance. -Artificial turf was very slick. Will be interesting now to see how LU will matchup with other SLC teams, because other teams will have tape on them. I don't know much about Weber International, but I would think it will be an easy win for Lamar.
Everyone keeps saying LU had 2 years to prepare for McNeese but I believe they really only spent about 3 weeks of game preparation for the cowboys. The gift td quote came right out of the McNeese SID article on the McNeese webpage.

I was at the game in the stands. My thoughts are we don't have a run game out of the spread but showed we could run out of the I formation. We have a big play offense that I think will only get better. Defense hit very hard and they caused the fumbles by McNeese. The hit by D'back from Lamar was highlight reel material. I think Lamar would be very competitive in the SLC this year. I think they will bet better as the season progresses. Game was very fun with lots of Lamar fans, my estimate is about 4k. I truly don't think McNeese expected LU to be this good. There fans thought were class acts and all expressed that they were glad for Lamar to have football back. Several gentlemen behind me said it was largest crowd they had seen in a very long time. I truly don't see how they could get 27k there for a game.
Backfield looked solid , Hughes looked poised and made the right decisions, Asher ran hard, McDonald blocked well , I thought #35 on defense played very well, along with Choate. Hope the injuries aren't bad, Lumberton doesnt look very deep. Barbers Hill came to play this week , they ran the ball pretty well in the second half.
Lumberton is not deep. Hopefully #55 Howden is ok. Haven't heard. They are especially thin in the line dept. If they can stay healthy, they will be scrappy and could definately have something to say about the playoff teams.
Just a question that some of you may know...if I have a cousin that is a speacial player in the area and I buy the tickets out of my own pockets, is it a violation if he attends any of the Lamar games with me? Don't want to get him or our new program in any trouble.
I don't know all the "small print" of the NCAA regs but I can't imagine that would be a violation when a family member buys their own family a ticket.

So tell me Cardinal fans....

I am pretty juiced. Thinking about making the drive to LC tomorrow. Looks like my schedule will permit. Wonder what the ticket situation looks like? -
Well if only 1500 hundred tickets left to the game I would think that means there are only 1500 season tickets left available
My guess is they have sold between 5 & 6k in season tickets. I hope I'm not to optimistic but that appears to be a good number based on everything I know about stadium capacity and tickets sold for the 1st game.
The scoreboard and Sound System is finished and looks great Keep in mind that there are still additions down the road to add-on to the scoreboard I also was told that they cranked up the system loud for a few minutes and you could hear it @ Wal-Mart :o
For a Silsbee Tiger fan how do you know so much about the Lumberton scoreboard?

Georgia State wins first game.
NorthoftheBorder replied to Javelina's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Bill Curry is generating a lot of national publicity for Georgia State. Would be real nice for LU to go into the Georgia Dome and get the win. -
I don't know an exact figure of season tickets but I can tell you there are only 1500 total tickets left for the home opener September 11th. So if you want to go and haven't got a ticket yet I don't recommend waiting to get them at the gate.
So tell us the in-exact figure that you do know for season ticket sales.

My son who is a senior at LHS sent me a text earlier that he helped wire in the speaker system and said that it was loud! That's as much as I know.

Dr. Simmons stated that enrollment at the Beaumont campus could be about 1000 more than last year. That's quite a jump. The Kampus Korner has remodeled and is more of a sports bar now. 3 or 4 new restaurants/businesses are coming to the campus area this coming year. He also stated the external research funding is now at $12 million, up from $3 million about 4 years ago. Great things are happening on campus!
Yes, very good solid growth. I think the research goal is $80 million so they have a long way to go.
I have no idea about CC. Does anyone know how that compares to other schools in the conference and to the likes of Texas,A&M, Rice, etc.
A&M is 40k+ enrollment. UH is close to that. Rice is only about 3,500 ot 4k, but they are all really bright! Baylor is about 15k. Here are the SLC schools except TX San An and TAMUCC. Cent ARk 11,750 McNeese 8,250 Nicholls 6,800 NW La 9,250 Sam Houston 16,800 SE La 15,225 SFA 12,850 Tx STate 30,800 Tx San is probably close to 30k but ai Update: TAMU CC 10,000 Tx San 29,000
Texas st going FBS will see an instant jump in attendance. Texas st then could bring in home games the likes of BYU, Alabama, K-st, Houston, TCU, and Texas Tech type teams. I think PU should be expanded to 40k if LU goes FBS. I am very sure Texas st and UTSA is getting the WAC invite spring 2011 or sooner. LU should join them. This a big door opening to FBS. Once you are in, you are in. Nobody can knock you out. FBS is working overtime to stop FCS upgrades and eventually it will happen. So LU can't mess around being too picky about moving up or LU will find itself locked out.
I'm no architect or engineer but I have done some looking and projecting of my own and I don't see how they can get more than 32-34k max capacity. there are real space limitations for PU. And I think they put the Athletic Complex a little to close to the stadium limiting the largest space they had available for expansion, the south end zone. I have looked several times and I am unsure about the ability to put a upper deck on the east side. I believe with some engineering genius, it probably could be done, or they could extend the east stadium seats further up. But the railroad tracks are a problem and I believe there are federal regulations as to how close structures can be to railroad tracks. I do believe you can get some stadium seating between the Montagne and the endzond (bleow the suites) but it will not add a great deal of capacity. The west side is even more space limited and maybe the best tehy can do is to put a real nice and spacious suite box that is first class and goes from goal line to goal line. The closer they can get to 40k the better.

Coachacola, do you know how many football season tickets have been sold so far?
-
Whats the status of QB Kevin Smith? Heard he injured his shoulder and don't know if he has started to practice yet. He is not being discussed in any of the discussions about QB. I saw him in the spring game and thought he looked pretty good.
-
This will get your fired up UNLV! Just saw on the Texas State Football site where they have announced a 13,500 seat expansion to Bobcat stadium that will start after the 2011 season. It will bring that stadium capacity to about 28-29k. Looks like they are getting ready for a move to FBS football. Lamar needs to be getting their expansion plans "construction ready" in case they need to move quickly.
Looks like McNeese will get three La. National Guard F-15's doing a flyover for the game for you guys. According to the story, it took two years to get all of the approvals. ] Doc
Good job Cowpokes! I assume Dr. Simmons is working on a 2 months or less time schedule to get this done so I don't know if it will happen or not for the first LU home game. Would be neat to have back to back flyovers for Lamar football.
-
La Tech gets a home and home football with BYU in 11 and 12. Lamar could be doing the samet-err, no, that would be thinking too big. SETX and Lamar couldn't measure up to Ruston, La. We should stay FCS for 5-10 years until everything is perfect. ::)
BYU coming into play LU in PU Stadium expanded to 30k is a no brainer. It would be filled and be the biggest sporting event ever in the history of Beaumont.

Taylor Trahan kicker for Nederland?
NorthoftheBorder replied to Michele's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
All I can say is I saw the young man kick in one game last year and he has a very strong leg. If the other young man is better then that is great and I'm sure Lamar's coaches wish him well. I just hope he really did get a fair chance. The kicker spot is always tough and you see a lot of player movement on professional teams. Look how much Matt Bryant has moved around. Lamar is going to miss a few locals they could and should have got and there are other local kids that they will want badly who choose to go elsewhere. I hope that the majority of the time they make the right decisions onlocal players and put a winning and entertaining product on the field. I think everyone else feels the same about that.
