Lee rally falls short against Port Arthur By Dave Rogers Published January 12, 2008 - Updated 57 minutes ago By Dave Rogers dave.rogers(at)baytownsun.com The Port Arthur Memorial Titans left their best player at home — again — but they still had too much firepower for Lee’s boys’ basketball team Friday night. University of Texas signee J’Covan Brown has been out since the District 21-5A opener Dec. 14, serving what his coach Terrul Henderson calls “an indefinite suspension.†But teammate Jacovin Buckner picked up enough of the slack Friday night, scoring 14 points to lead the Titans to a 53-43 win over the Ganders at Lee’s Gym. The Ganders played without a pair of injured starters, Darius Cooper and Xavier Scott, who were out with ankle injuries. “I had to play, basically, with seven guys tonight, and they (the Titans) just roll their players out there, one after another,†Lee coach Dote Williams said. After trailing 20-5 after one quarter of play, Williams’ team battled back to get within four points, 39-35, going into the final eight-minute quarter. Then the Ganders failed to score for more than four minutes at the outset of the period. “I guess we’re late bloomers,†Williams said. It wasn’t clear if he was talking about the first quarter or the last. Buckner scored six of his eight fourth-quarter points during Lee’s quiet spell, building Memorial’s lead back to double digits. Kevin Henry drove the lane for a pair of Gander buckets, but Buckner countered with a scoring swoop to the hoop of his own to staunch the mini-rally. Memorial improved to 4-1 in 21-5A play, 15-8 overall, while Lee fell to 0-5, 2-20. “It’s not very good to dig a hole and try to get out of it,†Williams said, this time talking about the bad first quarter. “Especially a 12-foot hole when you’re 5 foot tall.†Buckner and Jacory Tyler each scored six points in the first quarter while Lee’s scoring in the first period consisted of a 3-pointer by Cornelius Laday and a field goal by Reggie Butler. Laday led all scorers with 16 points, half of them coming in the third period when the Ganders outscored Port Arthur 16-9 to cut an 11-point halftime deficit to four. Eugene Mayes added a pair of baskets and Butler and Hudson one each in the third period. Hudson finished with eight points for the Ganders. Mayes and Butler added six each and Henry had five. Lee travels to Humble to take on the league-leading Wildcats Tuesday night.

Area coaches split on playoff expansion By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published January 12, 2008 - Updated 51 minutes ago The UIL has decided that what is good for Class 5A is good for Class 4A. But do area coaches feel that it is good for high school athletics? Pending approval from by Texas Education Agency Commissioner Robert Scott, the Class 4A playoffs will expand from three teams to four teams beginning with the 2008-09 school year. Among teams affected by the rule change would be Goose Creek Memorial High School, Barbers Hill, Crosby and Dayton. “Obviously I think its great,†GCMHS campus athletic coordinator Bret Boyd said. “When I saw it I thought it gives you one more shot and I was pleased with it because of the situation we’re in.†The trend to place four teams in the playoffs began in the fall of 2006 when Class 5A voted for the addition. At Killeen Ellison, Boyd was a beneficiary as the Eagles advanced out of District 13-5A as the fourth place team last season. Despite being able to take advantage of the new system, Boyd does see the negatives as well as the positives in allowing four teams out of a district to advance in the postseason. “I was leery when they went to three teams and then when 5A went to four teams,†Boyd said. “I liked it when there were just two teams, that was just right. Sometimes I think it is overdone. “Some districts are pretty tough, there are teams that come out as a four and are pretty tough. Converse Judson finished fourth in their district this season and made it to the state championship game. There is also a negative when you get some 2-8 and 3-7 teams that get in there.†This season, Kingwood advanced to the playoffs out of District 21-5A with a 3-7 record. One team that would have benefited from the addition of a fourth team in Class 4A this season is Barbers Hill. The Eagles missed out on the postseason after finishing fourth in District 21-4A with a 4-3 record. “We voted for it,†Barbers Hill athletic director Don Price said. “We thought for our overall sports it would be beneficial because of our enrollment.†Under the latest UIL, there are 229 Class 4A schools with enrollment between 950 and 1,984 students. Barbers Hill is one of the smallest Class 4A schools in the state. Superintendents of Class 4A schools approved the change by a 186-38 vote. “There are some positives because there is so much discrepancy in the small schools and the big schools,†Price said. “You have schools with 2,000 students on one end of the spectrum and schools with 1,000 on the other. We’ll adapt to whatever they do.†In the past two years, Crosby has qualified for the playoffs in football under head coach Kevin Flanigan who also serves as athletic director. With the addition of a fourth team, Flanigan feels strongly in the fact that making the playoffs will not have the same prestige as in years past. “I think it waters it down but when it’s all said and done no one will complain about it,†Flanigan said. “In my opinion it’s a little league, everybody is a winner deal. I’d rather it stay the way it is. I think three is plenty. The prestige of making the playoffs isn’t what it used to be.†“To an extent, it’s a money deal for the UIL but not for the schools. It costs money for teams to travel for the playoffs.â€

Mustangs hold off Cards, 47-37 Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — Using a stingy defense and a hot fourth quarter, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs nabbed their first District 21-3A win of the season by downing the Bridge City Cardinals 47-37 at Mustang Gym Friday night. It was a defensive slugfest throughout and the Cardinals (9-11, 2-3) bounced back from a 22-16 halftime deficit to grab a 32-31 edge heading into the fourth. The Mustangs (6-16, 1-4) picked up the pace in the fourth and forced the Cardinals into 10 of their 29 turnovers. The Mustangs finished with a 16-5 tear in the last eight minutes, holding the Cardinals without a field goal in the final period. Senior Ronnie Dennis led the Mustang arsenal, tallying 13 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Guard Marquest Watson pumped out 12 points and snagged five rebounds. Donovan Crochett contributed eight points and six boards while Donald Brown played well off the bench, collecting five points and yanking down a team-high 10 rebounds. Guard Jason Clark paced the Cardinals, scoring 12 points while adding six rebounds. Post Corey Smith tallied seven points and grabbed nine rebounds. Adam Sanchez contributed seven points and six rebounds while Jaden Dillon paced the Cardinals with 10 rebounds. The Mustangs darted out to a 14-9 edge at the end of the first period with Watson pouring in six points and Dennis four. The two squads duked it out on the defensive end in the second period as WO-S won that quarter just 8-7. The Cardinals returned with a flurry in the third period, limiting the Mustangs to just nine points while scoring 16 of their own. Clark led the rally by ripping off nine points of his own in the third. However, the Mustang defensive pressure was too much for the Cardinals to handle down the stretch run. Brown and Crochett controlled the glass for the Mustangs while point guard Darius Rubin, Dennis and post Jim McDonald continued to force turnover after Cardinal turnover. Crochett and Dennis each hit a couple field goals apiece to ignite the 16-point Mustang period. The Mustangs finished with a 42-36 rebounding edge. WO-S finished with 13 turnovers. Bridge City converted just 15-of-29 free throws while the Mustangs went 11-of-22 from the charity stripe. WO-S will look for its second straight 21-3A win when they play host to Hamshire-Fannett (1-19, 0-5) Tuesday while the Cardinals look to rebound against third-ranked Hardin-Jefferson (23-3, 5-0). -

Lady ’Cats take down Lady Hawks, 52-43 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — With half of District 21-3A play in the books, the No. 16 Orangefield Lady Bobcats are now the only team remaining undefeated with sole possession of first place. Orangefield used a stingy defense to get past No. 17 Hardin-Jefferson Friday night in Bobcat Gym on its way to a 52-43 victory. The win propels the Lady Bobcats to 16-9 on the season and a perfect 7-0 in the district standings. The Lady Hawks fall to 19-5 overall and are now two games back of first with a 5-2 district mark. “It really blows my mind to know Hardin-Jefferson is now two games back of first,†Orangefield Coach Chris Jost said. “I have seen them play several times and have seen their scores all year, I know how good they can play. We definitely know what we are in for when we finish off district at their place.†For now though the Lady Bobcats will be able to celebrate a huge win before taking on Silsbee Tuesday at home. Senior Kaylin Little once again paced the Orangefield offense with 19 points while Olivia Wagner added 11 and Allie Beach finished with 10. Several Lady Bobcats were key on the defensive side as Little finished with four steals and Laura Riddick, Beach and freshman Marissa Wyatt had three. Wagner also finished with a game-high eight rebounds. Orangefield held Hardin-Jefferson to just the 43 points and also forced 17 turnovers on the night. “We definitely play up to our competition,†Jost said. “What a great defensive effort. They (Lady Hawks) are one of the best teams we will play all year. We dictated things on defense and had them confused at times what they wanted to do.†Orangefield held Hardin-Jefferson’s Katelyn Bernsen to just 10 points while Latricia Moore had a team-high 15 points. Little broke the game open late in the third after Hardin-Jefferson’s Jennifer Breeden knocked down a three to make it 37-30 Lady Bobcats. Little scored the game’s next seven points, including a three of her own, to put the Lady Bobcats up 44-30 heading into the fourth. Orangefield would need all of those points as Hardin-Jefferson went on a 7-0 run to start the game’s final eight minutes to close the gap to 44-37. Beach finally got the Lady Bobcats on the board with a free throw with 4:20 left on the game clock. The Lady Hawks then made it just a five-point game at 46-41 with 3:30 remaining in the game. It was Beach again who came through for Orangefield with a bucket and Little quickly followed with two free throws to make it 50-41 with 54.5 left. The two teams traded buckets the rest of the way and Orangefield found themselves the victors. “The girls really stepped up tonight and made some huge plays,†Jost said. Orangefield got Bernsen in early foul trouble as the Hardin-Jefferson standout was forced to the bench midway through the second with three fouls. Orangefield went on a 10-3 run the rest of the way to take a 29-22 lead into halftime. The Lady Hawks were up 22-19 before Bernsen was called for her third foul. -
Young inducted into Hall of Fame Ken Sury The Orange Leader WACO — It was fitting that on a night dedicated to honoring those who love high school baseball, family was the main theme of the speakers at the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association. It was embodied by Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan, the guest speaker, who was surrounded by his family. And it was evident in the speech given by former Bridge City baseball coach Chuck Young, one of three high school coaches inducted Friday night during the banquet at the Waco Convention Center that’s part of the annual baseball coaches convention. Young, as well as fellow inductees Diz Reeves of San Antonio and Larry Stewart of Troy, were quick to thank their families for their sacrifices to let their husbands and fathers, as Young said, “go out and play ball with a bunch of kids.†Ryan, the all-time strikeout leader and author of seven no-hitters, talked about the special bond he continues to have with baseball teams on which he’s played, from high school to the major leagues. He also talked about the joy of his family’s involvement in baseball, which continues today with Dell Diamond in Round Rock, which hosted the state baseball tournament. Ryan was surprised by association president and Brenham coach Jim Long by also being inducted into the Hall after the end of his speech. Young, who is approaching 700 victories, was the last of the high school inductees to speak, and he was by far the funniest. He opened with a story about his first coaching job at Midlothian in 1967 when he set the infield on fire because he was told to burn off the existing grass. That bought out the Midlothian Volunteer Fire Department and an admonition from his principal. He shared tales of his wife, Judith, in her role as team mom giving the players brownies and Blue Bell ice cream after wins, but nothing after a loss. “That’s called motivation,†he deadpanned. But some of the bigger laughs came as he related a story of former West Orange-Stark coach Ronnie Anderson, who was inducted into the Hall in 2003, essentially tackling a Mustang player as he overran third base during one of their games. Anderson, Young said, hopped out of the coaching box and wrestled the big kid back to the base. “Of course, the ump didn’t see it,†he recalled. When the teams met again in a district game at Bridge City, his wife put a stake in the ground at the third-base coaching box with a rope attached. When Anderson asked about it, Young explained that he was going to tied up every time his team came up to bat. “Ronnie used a lot of words I didn’t know,†Young said. “I never knew Ronnie met my mother,†which completely broke up the crowd. But Young also drew serious and talked about his desire to help the students and players he worked with at school. “I’ve been influenced by many of the young men in the 42 years I’ve coached,†he said. “Don’t say the kids are interfering with my job. Your job is the kids.†He also commented on how baseball is still just a game and recalled his Texas City waiting out a rain delay third game of a series with Montgomery at the University of Houston last season. Assistant coach Matt Cooper drew a tic-tac-toe grid on a baseball and tossed it to the opposing dugout. The kids from each team spent the next two-and-a-half hours marking up the baseballs playing tic-tac-toe, hangman and I Spy, he said. “We ruined 18 baseballs that day,†he said. “But you can do that in baseball. It is a game.†His son, Joe, flew in from California to introduce his father at the banquet. Daughters Debbie and Beth also were there along with Young's six grandchildren and friends and former coaching partners Bill Dixon and Terry Steubing. Joe Young said his father “was motivated to have an impact on kids’ lives†and taught them life lessons beyond the baseball field. Little Cypress-Mauriceville coach Steve Griffith and his wife and child made the drive up to honor Young, who called the Hall recognition “mind-boggling†and “humbling.†“My hobby is baseball and my job is baseball,†Young told to the audience, which had filled the large banquet room to listen to Ryan. “That’s a blessed situation.â€
