Lee picks up first win of the season From sports staff reports Baytown Sun Published January 13, 2008 THE WOODLANDS— The Gander soccer team notched its first win of the season on the final day of The Woodlands Tournament with a 2-1 win over Pasadena in a shootout. Octavio Torres and Benito Huerta scored in the shootout and goaltender Jose Cornejo stopped all four Pasadena shots as Lee improved to 1-2 on the season. “Pasadena was a playoff team last year and will probably go again,†Lee head coach Cris Dippel said. “We got a win but we have a lot of work to do.†Lee took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by Luis Camacho, which stood up until five minutes remaining in the contest moving the game to a shootout. “We played everybody,†Dippel said. “I subbed 10 players to start the second half and they played for 20 minutes. I should have left them out there because they were doing a good job but the first team was rested and ready to go.†Lee will return to action on Tuesday when it hosts South Houston in a rematch of last year’s bi-district playoff game that the Trojans won in a shootout. “They are going to be tough,†Dippel said. “They return everybody from last year’s team.†Houston Reagan boys 3, Sterling 0 PEARLAND — The third game in a row was not a charm for Sterling as it dropped a 3-0 decision to Houston Reagan in the Pearland Tournament. Reagan scored two goals in the first half and added a third in the second half to drop Sterling to 1-2 on the season. “When you play a game like that it is hard to find some bright spots,†Sterling head coach Jim Richter said. “We had our moments in the game and we played pretty good defense in general. Dobie had beaten Reagan the day before but it’s kind of hard to tell in these tournaments.†One of the standouts for Sterling was midfielder Geovane Preciado. The junior just missed putting the ball in the net on a header in the second half. Misel Velasquez also stood out defensively. “Misel has been a real animal on defense,†Richter said. “He was a real bright spot this weekend. “The bright spot is we got to see our kids deal with adversity. We’re going to be all right. I really like this team.†Sterling will be on the road Tuesday when it faces former district rival Spring. In sub-varsity action, the Sterling junior varsity finished the weekend with a fourth place finish in the Clear Creek Tournament and posted a 1-2-1 record. Alex Einsco and Rene Brounda each had a strong tournament for Sterling.

Lady Titans crush Lady Ganders By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News Behind some great 3-point shooting, the Lady Memorial Titans strummed Baytown Lee in Port Arthur on Friday night. The Lady Titans hit 4-of-6 from behind the arc in the fourth quarter alone, cruising to a 51-35 victory over the Lady Ganders. With the win, Memorial improves to 16-7 overall and 5-2 in District 21-5A. The Lady Titans will travel to play West Brook on Tuesday. Head coach Joe Fonteneaux said while the game was sloppy with fouls at times, he was pleased his team picked up a win. "We lost two in a row," he said, "so this was a big win for us. It's good to be back on the winning side of things. It's good for us to get back in the swing of things. We're at the halfway point now and we're in really good shape." The Titans get the district's tougher teams (Humble, Kingwood and Channelview) at home in this half of league play. Fonteneaux said the key to making a playoff run is to win the games at home and then try to steal a few on the road. While the Titans lost to Humble and Kingwood on the road, they did steal one from Channelview and at 5-2, Port Arthur has plenty of reasons to believe they are playoff bound. The Lady Titans pulled out to 20-point leads on three difference occasions and owned a 51-27 lead with just 3:53 left in the game. Most of that lead was built by Amber Kinlaw's shooting. Kinlaw hit two threes in the fourth quarter and was 4-of-10 for the game. Kinlaw tallied 15 points for the game. She was joined by Kandice Smith, who scored 15 points as well. Katherine Henderson and Sasha Charles both dropped in 10 points for Port Arthur. The game was never really in question. Memorial took an early 5-2 lead and then Lee hit a three to tie things up at 5-5. The Lady Titans then went on a 10-0 lead to end the first quarter at 15-5. Port Arthur only allowed 10 points in the first half. The Lady Titans shot 6-of-17, from behind the arc, for the game; and Memorial out rebounded the Lady Ganders 27-18. Once Fonteneaux called off the starters, Lee put together a 8-0 run to end the game that cut the score to 51-35.
