  1. Humble Kingwood boys 9, Port Arthur Memorial 0 HUMBLE -- No. 13 never proved to be an unlucky jersey number for Cale Haas on Monday. The Kingwood senior scored four goals as state powerhouse Kingwood rolled by Memorial, 9-0, on Monday night at Turner Stadium. Kingwood raised its record to 19-1-1 and 9-0, handing 19th-year head coach Kevin Johnson his 479th victory at the school. Johnson ranks among the top three all-time winningest coaches in Texas high school soccer history. Five other Mustangs managed one goal apiece -- Michael Schwarz, Vincent Martinelli, Zack Bridger, Justin Anderson and Marc Herzberger. The Titans of coach Brian Morgan (3-14, 1-9) will entertain Baytown Lee on Friday night in the PAISD auxiliary field at 7 p.m.
  2. Competitive YMBL tough on PA girls HIGH SCHOOL TRACK & FIELD By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News BEAUMONT — Call this 21st annual YMBL/BISD track meet successful in most every way unless you were seeking a top-notch Port Arthur story angle. As usual, this West Brook get-together contained its usual share of superior performances... just not from Port Arthur. Unless you want to devote paragraph after paragraph to the heart of this Memorial girls squad, the pickings turned rather slim. There were plenty of outstanding numbers to report. Such as 11 new area-best performances in the girls division, five new ones in the boys division. The beautiful 80-degree sunshine was hard to beat. When it came to hard to beat, try catching up with Friendswood Clear Brook’s overpowering sprinter Erica Alexander and an eye-popping FAT time of 24.59 in the girls 200-meter finals. Erica ran the anchor leg on a pair of victorious 4 X 1 and 4 X 2 relays, too. She simply overpowered the curve in the 200 and that rarely ever tends to happen in a high school girls 200-meter dash. If you missed a glimpse of Alexander, you had to witness the 2008 coming-out party for Beaumont Ozen junior A’Lexus Brannon. Three of the new area-bests belong to A’Lexus on this first March Sunday — the 100-meter hurdles in a blistering 14.34, a long jump of 19-1 for the defending 4A state long jump champion, and a triple jump of 38-8 1/4. Brannon’s high-point effort guided Ozen to 108 points in the 11-team girls division followed by Alexander’s Clear Brook team at 100 points. Memorial placed a middle of the pack fifth with 62 points. But the Lady Titans of coaches Sandra Bradford and Debra Arvie only sneaked into the winner’s circle once. That’s when senior Danielle Smith won the shot put in 35-6, slightly less than Danielle’s area-best of 35-11 1/4. “We’ve just had so many injuries,†Bradford said. “I’m surprised we’re doing as well as we are. These kids have a lot of heart... “We really had to make a lot of adjustments today. It was tough.†Memorial’s Terrell Robertson was bothered by soft tissue on the outside of her foot but was still able to place second in the long jump and 100-meter dash. Paris Collins also found what it was like to chase Brannon with a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles. The Lady Titans’ sick-and-injured list contained Kierra Roy (sore quadricep), J.J. Keller (knee), De’Ontra Kinlaw (sick), and Jasmine Eaglin (sick). Injuries depleted enough of Darrell Granger’s squad that Memorial’s boys opted to withdraw from the meet completely. Angleton outpointed Houston Nimitz 156-129 for the boys team title with a very good Beaumont Central team in third at 106.
  3. Wind not a problem for Ganders By Dave Rogers Published March 4, 2008 When the West Brook Bruins failed to score in the first half of Monday night’s soccer game, their chances were gone with the wind. Lee’s Ganders took advantage of the 40-mile per hour wind in the second half to dominate the final 40 minutes and take a 4-0 win in the District 21-5A match at Sultis Stadium. “This was the worst wind I’ve played in,†REL’s veteran coach, Criss Dippel said. “But I wanted to play tonight, because that (a postponement) would put us having to play both Thursday and Friday. It’s hard to go 80 minutes on back to back nights.†The win puts the Ganders in sole possession of fourth place in the district with a 4-5-1 record and 13 points. Sterling, which had its scheduled game against Channelview postponed by the hosts on account of Monday’s rains, winds and near-freezing temperatures, can rejoin Lee in a tie for fourth with a win in the makeup game Thursday. The wind blew so hard Monday night that Gander goalie Jose Cornejo was able to boot the ball from his goal to West Brook goalie Sam Gurski at the other end on one hop, a carry of 85 yards or so in the air. So the ball stayed in West Brook’s end of the field most of the second half and the Ganders kept the pressure on Gurski. Octavio Torres broke the scoring ice 10 minutes into the second half, with Benito Huerta teeing up a Luis Camacho cross for an easy score by Torres. Edgar Sanchez got Lee’s second goal after a Bruin defender cleared a corner kick right to him for an easy chip-in with 13 minutes remaining. Huerta scored with 10 minutes to go after he beat Gurski to an ill-advised pass back by a Bruin teammate, and Camacho wrapped up the scoring with four minutes to go by outrunning Gurski to the ball on a breakaway. “We’re basically in the playoffs now,†Dippel said, not meaning that the Ganders had wrapped up a spot. He meant they were facing almost sudden death, needing to win their final four matches. “We’ve got to win every match to get that fourth place,†he said. The Ganders played with a sense of urgency from the start. They actually outshot the Bruins in the first half, despite having to battle the wind. “We played good defense and we won every ball,†Dippel praised. “We just had to keep it on the ground and work it up the field. “And I didn’t want the kids to think that the wind was all we needed. All they had to do was keep the ball on the ground and work it up. I was worried our defense was going to fall asleep with all the action on the other end. “Still, we were fortunate to be able to play with the wind behind us in the second half.â€

  9. Yankees tag McLemore for the win KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The New York Yankees tagged reliever Mark McLemore for three runs in the sixth inning to beat the Astros 7-6 this afternoon in a Grapefruit League game at Osceola County Stadium. The Yankees, playing without Alex Rodriguez, Jason Giambi and Derek Jeter, scored four runs off Astros starter Wandy Rodriguez to take a 4-2 lead in the third, but Carlos Lee hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning to give the Astros a 5-4 advantage. Chris Woodward's two-run single keyed the Yankees' three-run outburst in the sixth. Hunter Pence went 2-for-3 with two doubles for the Astros, and Jose Cruz Jr. was 2-for-3 with two RBIs to raise his average to .333. Wandy Rodriguez started for the Astros and gave up six hits and four runs in 2 1/3 innings. Brian Moehler and Sammy Gervacio each threw two-thirds of an inning of scoreless ball, and Oscar Villarreal, Wesley Wright and Mike DeJean tossed one scoreless inning.
