Area sharpshooters headline in 21-4A From sports staff reports Baytown Sun Published March 5, 2008 The Crosby and Barbers Hill basketball teams were well represented on the All-District 21-4A lists. The postseason awards were released following Smiley’s elimination from the playoffs in the regional semifinals this past weekend. First-year Crosby head coach Justin Reece was named 21-4A co-coach of the year along with Smiley’s James Norman. Crosby turned it around in district after a slow start. The Cougars finished second in 21-4A with an 11-3 record and finished 17-15 overall after falling to Dayton in bi-district. “I told the kids that a lot of the individual honors we got was because we earned it as a team,†Reece said. “You have to give the kids credit. They bought into playing unselfish and playing defense.†Barbers Hill finished third in district with a 9-5 record and 21-11 record overall. The Eagles advanced to the area playoffs where they fell in a close game to La Marque. Barbers Hill senior Brooks Ybarra and Crosby junior Kendrae Carter were named co-offensive players of the year. “Kendrae wasn’t the third of fourth option of the year anymore,†Reece said. “I thought he was just a tough matchup for everyone we played. I thought both Kendrae and Brooks were both deserving.†Augustine Rubit and Jonathon Simmons of Smiley were named co-MVP and Bennie Easter of Smiley was named defensive player of the year. Emonte McMillan of C.E. King was named newcomer of the year. “I thought that Brooks or Jon was deserving of offensive player of the year,†Barbers Hill head coach Nathan Toon said. “They were about equally as valuable to us this year. Defensively, Heath Padgett did as good a job as anyone in the district. I also thought Justin did a great job and deserved to be recognized.†Senior Jon Daniels and junior Ian Hamlin represented the Eagles on the first team. Matt Guillory and B.J. Jacobs of Crosby were also named first team. Filling out the rest of the team was Bennie Bamste of C.E. King, Robert Mayes of Smiley, Ryan Rone of Huffman, Ryan Hagan of Galena Park, Danny Fernandez of New Caney and Duane Wade of Smiley. A.J. Anderson of Crosby was named to the second team and was joined by Josh Williams of C.E. King, Roger West and Jarrick Hoskins of Smiley, Marvin Perkins and Aaron Aubrey of Forest Brook, Marcus Compian of Huffman, Jerrell Byrd and Brandon Taylor of Galena Park and Kevin Boyd of New Caney. “I thought we had a couple of guys that deserved to be named second team but sometimes it gets real political,†Toon said. “What counts if we got in the playoffs and advanced to area. But in the end we got what we deserved and that’s what counts.†Jake Miller, Heath Padgett and Colby Henscey of Barbers Hill were named honorable mention as was Lester Debose and M.J. Mathis. Daniels of Barbers Hill and Elijah Chambers were named academic all-district.

Texas fends off Nebraska rally for 70-66 win

Texas fends off Nebraska rally for 70-66 win AUSTIN -- For 33 minutes, Nebraska frustrated the Texas Longhorns with a barrage of 3-pointers. The Longhorns returned the favor late in the second half. A.J. Abrams hit a 3-pointer with 41.4 seconds remaining as No. 9 Texas, which blew a 17-point second-half lead, escaped with a 70-66 victory over Nebraska on Tuesday at the Erwin Center. Texas (25-5) tied the school record with its 25th regular-season victory and can clinch the No. 1 seed in next week’s Big 12 tournament with a win over Oklahoma State in the regular-season finale Sunday in Austin. The Longhorns are tied with Kansas for the Big 12 lead at 12-3. The Jayhawks finish the season Saturday at Texas A&M. If the two teams finish with identical conference records, the Longhorns would secure the top seed based on its 72-69 victory over Kansas on Feb. 11. Texas closed the first half on a 20-5 run, which included a stretch of 15 unanswered points. The Longhorns took their biggest lead of the game, 43-26, when Damion James hit a jumper in the opening minute of the second half. Nebraska (17-11, 6-9) climbed back into the game with an 18-4 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Paul Velander. The Cornhuskers made 10 3-pointers in the game. They entered the game shooting a Big 12-worst 34.1 percent from beyond the arc. Tied at 52, D.J. Augustin, Justin Mason and Connor Atchley hit consecutive 3-pointers for a 61-54 lead. The Cornhuskers scored seven straight points, including a pair of close-range shots underneath the basket by Aleks Maric to tie the game at 61. Abrams, who was 1-of-5 shooting in the first half, buried a 3-pointer to give the Longhorns the lead and hit four straight free throws in the final 23 seconds. Nebraska got within two points on two occasions in the final 18.7 seconds, the last on a layup by Sek Henry with 12.1 seconds remaining. Mason recovered a loose ball on an inbounds pass and made two free throws to seal the victory. Texas made six of its nine 3-pointers in the second half -- four in the last seven minutes. Augustin led Texas with 22 points, and James added 16 points and nine rebounds. Abrams scored 11 of his 15 points after halftime. Maric led the Cornhuskers with 17 points. The Longhorns improved to 16-1 at the Erwin Center this season, tying the 2000-01 and 1932-33 teams for the most home wins in school history. -

ESPN Classic Pieces Together Baylor-A&M Game

ESPN Classic Pieces Together Baylor-A&M Game Viewers get to see Baylor-Texas A&M five-overtime game at last Associated Press Updated: March 4, 2008, 8:21 PM ET DALLAS -- The first Baylor-Texas A&M meeting was the best game of the season that nobody saw on TV. Baylor outlasted Texas A&M on Jan. 23, winning 116-110 in five overtimes behind a career-high 36 points from Curtis Jerrells. But if you weren't there, you didn't see it, thanks to an unlikely set of circumstances that left the game with no television coverage. The rematch Wednesday night will be on national TV, and finally, so will the original. ESPN Classic has pieced together a complete game telecast using footage from Texas A&M's in-arena cameras that the school uses to show games on its Jumbotron. The network then matched the game footage with play-by-play and commentary from the Aggies' radio broadcasters. The original game will air on ESPN Classic at 6 p.m. ET, followed by the rematch at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Texas A&M coach Mark Turgeon might want to change the channel, but Baylor coach Scott Drew said he is encouraging everyone he knows "to Tivo it or record it and check it out." "The best part for Baylor fans is they don't have to chew their nails because they know how it ends," Drew said. The teams set or tied six conference records, including points by a team and combined points. Other records set included Baylor's 70 rebounds, 97 field-goal attempts, 39 made free throws and Jerrells' 20 made free throws. Perhaps the only thing more unusual than a game with five overtimes was a Big 12 game with no television coverage. Under the Big 12 television deal, the big national networks get first crack at games. After that, the conference's syndicate package gets to choose which games to air regionally on ESPN. If the syndicate passes on televising a game, local channels, in this case Fox Sports Southwest, get to televise the game. For the first game, everyone passed. It could have aired locally had both schools agreed to move the game from Wednesday night to Tuesday night. But that was held up because Reed Arena was booked with, of all things, an engineering job fair. Odder still, both teams were ranked at the time. Baylor (20-8, 8-6 Big 12) was No. 25 and the Aggies (21-8, 7-7) were 18th. The schools have been playing since 1914, and it was the first time both were ranked, Drew said. "I'm disappointed for our fans that didn't get a chance to see it," Drew said. "And I'm disappointed for the Big 12 conference from the standpoint that we would have gotten a lot more national attention." ESPN Classic has pieced together telecasts of old games before, "but never on a modern-day game," said Brian Kweder, senior director of programming and acquisitions for the network. A production team used footage from a center-court camera and cameras under each basket to create what Kweder said looks "almost like a typically college basketball game." Drew said he is pleased that what he calls "the game of the year" will get to a national audience. "A lot of people were talking about it," Drew said. "I think after it is televised, the buzz really will hit." -
