With the Davis football team, there is plenty of talent present. But where the issue lies is depth. During spring football, the Panthers suited up less than 40 players for the varsity squad and not all were varsity players according to Davis coach Chuck Arnold.
But, 11 players do return from last year’s 7-3 team.
Leading the way offensively will be quarterback John Castillo. As a junior, Castillo threw 1,905 yards and 22 touchdowns. When Castillo puts the ball in the air, look for wide receiver Patrick Chenier and tight end Chris Pruitt to be the go-to targets.
Also joining Castillo in the backfield is running back Nathaniel White, who rushed for 557 yards and eight touchdowns in 2007. Center Francisco Conejo is the leader on the front line.
Defensively, the Panthers have a couple of guys who showed string leadership in spring and linebacker Allen Roy and defensive end Ishmail Hayes both could be worthy of the title. Hayes is coming off a junior season where he recorded 15 sacks.
Davis was ranked No. 2 in the district last year in both team offense
