  3. The Mick's "tape measure" shot ... On This Day (April 17th) In Baseball History In 1953 at Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C., Mickey Mantle connects on a pitch from the Senators Chuck Stobbs and sends it 565 feet, as the term "tape measure" is given a new meaning in baseball. The Yankees win 7-3 and Mantle's legend is growing.......
  4. Crawford suspended for actions toward Duncan Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) - NBA referee Joey Crawford was suspended indefinitely by commissioner David Stern on Tuesday for his conduct toward Tim Duncan, who contends the ref challenged him to a fight. Crawford ejected Duncan from a game in Dallas on Sunday, calling a second technical foul on the San Antonio Spurs star while he was on the bench. "He looked at me and said, 'Do you want to fight? Do you want to fight?"' Duncan said. "If he wants to fight, we can fight. I don't have any problem with him, but we can do it if he wants to. I have no reason why in the middle of a game he would yell at me, 'Do you want to fight?"' Crawford's suspension will last at least through the NBA finals.
  5. Heard from the Super. He said they'll be hiring at the next board meeting in early May.
  6. That's what me and Chris the owner of texashsfootball were talking about last night, i don't think folks would mind the travel (Small School teams) if they had a much better chance for the playoffs.
  7. No. The big Districts would play big Districts and Small would play small.
  8. Good luck. I think they've got a shot!!

  11. Rockets drop Suns, clinch home edge in 1st round Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady stood face-to-face at midcourt beaming and shaking and then finally slapping hands together joyously. They were not, however, celebrating merely the win or the moment. They had finally done enough to hold off the relentless charge of the Phoenix Suns, securing their 120-117 win only when the final three-tenths of a second slipped away. But it was more than that. It was more than the home-court advantage that they clinched, assuring their first-round playoff series against the Utah Jazz will begin either Saturday or Sunday in Houston. It was more even than finally beating the Suns, who had tormented them so this season and last. They stood together and rejoiced about the possibilities they felt as 18,375 fans, the second largest crowd in franchise history, shook Toyota Center as if the playoffs had begun and this one win brought them more than improved chances. "This was a great accomplishment because we know how important the game was," McGrady said after scoring 39 points with 11 rebounds and nine assists. "There was something major at stake. If we win, we knew we're getting home court. Knowing that, and going against a team like Phoenix, and to come out victorious, it was definitely a great feeling. "That's a hell of a team over there and a team that had our number, a team I played (terrible) basketball against for three games. They had my number and they had our number. "We proved something to ourselves, definitely, knowing that if something of that magnitude in a game was on the line, we're capable of winning it." The win ended the Rockets' six-game losing streak to the Suns and six-game losing streak to Phoenix in Houston. With their fifth-consecutive win, matching the Rockets' longest winning streak this season, the Rockets are 52-29, their most wins since the 1996-97 season, the last one in which they have won a playoff series. Perhaps most significant, however, was that the Suns were their usual sensational selves, answering everything the Rockets threw at them all night until the final seconds, and the Rockets found a way to do just a touch more. What a feeling "It was huge," said Yao, who had 34 points, making 14 of his 20 shots and scoring 13 in the fourth quarter. "We were so excited when we saw the clock running to zero. Everybody was running to the middle. I don't know if it's the same feeling, but it feels like winning a playoff series. I know there's harder and better battles waiting for us, but today is a big win." It became more rewarding because the Suns made it so difficult. With the game tied at 66 four minutes into the second half, the Suns had made 17 of 21. It took just a missed shot or two, and in very much the Suns' style, the Rockets took off. In the next five minutes, they outscored Phoenix 19-4. McGrady hit a 3. Juwan Howard tipped in a miss. Yao followed an offensive rebound for a three-point play. With two Rafer Alston free throws, the Rockets had a 10-0 run. Suns guard Leandro Barbosa put in a jumper, but Yao hit a jumper, Shane Battier a 3-pointer and McGrady two more jumpers to take the lead to 85-70 less than three minutes before the fourth quarter. The Rockets still led by 10 with 2:14 remaining, but did not score again until the final fraction of a second. The Suns scored seven unanswered points, as the Rockets clung to the most fragile of three-point leads heading into the final seconds. Amare Stoudemire, who had 30 points, but just two in the fourth quarter, missed, but the ball went back out of bounds off Yao and Shawn Marion, with Marion beating Yao on the jump. The Suns missed again, this time with Steve Nash missing a 3 with 6.4 seconds left, but again, the Rockets could not control the rebound. And again, the Suns missed, with Stoudemire missing a 3, and Marion putting it in with one second left, leaving the Suns a point short. Alston was fouled with three-tenths of a second left, and put in both free throws to finally finish it, and the Suns' mastery. Maximum effort "If you're a competitor, there comes a time you get tired of somebody kicking your butt," Alston said. "We wanted to just to sustain a level of play that matches theirs — or exceeds theirs." More than exceed the Suns', it was in many ways, the Rockets' best. Or at least, with much at stake and much more coming, it felt that way.
  12. Shafer's key hit propels WO-S by OF, 5-4 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — At the beginning of Monday’s game against the Orangefield Bobcats, West Orange-Stark Coach Derrick Rivers called out to his team it expected to lose. There was not too much hooting and hollering even when leadoff hitter Earl Thomas smacked a home run in the bottom of the first. Third baseman Will Shafer changed all that in the bottom of the seventh as his double propelled the Mustangs to a 5-4 win over the Bobcats. Shafer’s no-out double to center gave courtesy runner Jeremy Phares plenty of time to score and moved the Mustangs to 2-9 in District 21-3A play and 3-13-2 overall. Orangefield fell to 9-11 overall and 3-8 in the district standings. Justin Gearhart led the bottom of the seventh off with a walk and Phares immediately came in to run. Terry Veitch then reached base and advanced the runner on an Orangefield error. A wild pitch advanced to scoring position at second and third before Shafer sent the fans home with his late inning heroics. “We have been playing good ball the last few weeks,†Rivers said. “We have a couple of freshmen who moved up from JV so there is a real competitive nature on the team right now.†Justin Gearhart was the winning pitcher for the Mustangs after he hurled 4 2/3 innings giving up one run on four hits with one walk and four strike outs. Gearhart came in for relief of Casey Tarver who pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up three runs on six hits with one walk and one strike out. Orangefield freshman Jacob Felts absorbed the loss after tossing the complete game. He gave up five runs on seven hits with four strike outs and seven walks. The Bobcats carried a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth but with one down Chase Adams ripped a double to left field and scored when Cody Hodge hit a RBI single to left. Hodge was called out during the next batter on a fielder’s choice and the Mustangs then loaded the bases on a walk and hit batter. Felts settled down and got Jacoby Franks to fly out to first to end the threat. Orangefield got on the board first as center fielder Jace Statum led the game off with a single to center and moved all the way to third when Possum LaFleur laid down a nice bunt. The ball rolled up the third baseline and nestled on the chalk. WO-S did not cover third and Statum used heads up base running to take the extra base. Felts then helped himself out with a RBI single to left scoring Statum for a 1-0 Orangefield lead. The lead did not last long as Thomas sent a Felts’ offering in the bottom of the first over the right field fence, his fifth homer of the season. With one down, Franks hit an infield single and eventually took third on a Gearhart single to left. Veitch then picked up the RBI with a sacrifice fly to left scoring Franks making it 2-1 Mustangs. WO-S’ lead did not last long either as Corey Sheppard led the top of the second off with an infield single and took second on a passed ball. Brett Ramsey then advanced Sheppard to third and took first on another infield single. Sheppard then got caught in a run down during a suicide squeeze attempt but a WO-S error gave him time to scoring making it 2-2 and Ramsey moved all the way to third. Orangefield freshman Derreck Evans then laced a RBI single to center scoring Ramsey for a 3-2 Orangefield lead. The Mustangs got the run back in the bottom of the second as Adams led off with a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. With one down Taylor Bonnin hit a RBI single scoring Adams from second and tying the score at three runs each. Orangefield did not make it 4-3 until the top of the fifth when Statum led off with a double to the center field fence. Felts then with one down smacked a RBI single to right scoring Statum. The Mustangs return to action Friday when they travel to Bridge City while the Bobcats will host Hardin-Jefferson.
